This paper presents an application layer multicast tree constructing algorithm to minimize the average time delay from the sender to end-systems for the effective real-time media delivery. Simultaneously, the proposed algorithm takes into account the computing power and the network condition of each end-system as a control variable and thus avoids the undesirable case that loads are concentrated to only several end-systems. The multicast tree is constructed by clustering technique and modified Dijkstra's algorithm in two steps, i.e. tree among proxy-senders and tree in each cluster. By the experimental results, we show that the proposed algorithm can provide an effective solution.

Application layer multicast(ALM) has been developed as an alternative to support the multi-receiver applications due to the slow deployment of IP multicast. Unlike routers in IP multicast, end systems participating in a ALM session are not optimized for relaying data and have various processing and network capacity. Therefore, with the increased role of end systems, the delay incurred at the end systems occupy large portion of the end-to-end delay. In this paper, we model the end system delay of ALM sessions and analyze its impact on the performance of the existing ALM schemes. Furthermore, we propose an enhanced scheme, based on the existing mesh-based scheme, which reflects the end system delay We also evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme by simulation and show that it reduces the end-to-end delay compared with the existing scheme.

It is important to constantly provide service in real-time multimedia applications using multicast. Transmission path reconstruction occurs in hybrid multicast using Internet Protocol (IP) multicast and ALM in order to adapt the network status to things like congestion. So, there is a problem in which real-time QoS is reduced, caused by an increase in end-to-end delay. In this paper, we want to solve this problem through multi-layer transmission path construction. In the proposed method, we deploy the control server and application layer overlay host (ALOH) in each multicast domain (MD) for hybrid multicast construction. After the control server receives the control information from an ALOH that joins the MD, it makes a group based on the hop count and sends it to the ALOH in each MD. The ALOH in the MD performs the role of sending the packet to another ALOH and constructs the multi-layered transmission path in order of priority by using control information that is received from the control server and based on the delay between neighboring ALOHs. When congestion occurs in, or is absent from, the ALOH in the upper MD, the ALOH selects the path with the highest priority in order to reduce end-to-end delay. Simulation results show that the proposed method could reduce the end-to-end delay to less than 289 ms, on average, under congestion status.

The access control techniques, which can control unauthorized members to access to multicast service, have not been studied very often while there are a lot of on-going study on secure multicast architecture, multicast key distribution and sender authentication scheme have been studied. Multi level access control scheme in multicast can be used in a remote secure conference or to provide graduated multimedia services to each customers. In fact, multicast network has its own virtual networks according to different security levels. However, Early schemes are not effective when it protects unauthorized access in multi-access network environment. Furthermore this scheme does not provide us with hierarchical access control mechanism. This paper, therefore, proposes hierarchical access control scheme to provide the effectiveness in network layer by security level comparison. And we also suggests hierarchical key distribution scheme for multi level access control in application layer and effective hierarchical key renewal scheme in dynamic multicast environment which is easy to join and leaving the multicast group.
Algorithms for application-level multicast often use trees to deliver data from the source to the multiple receivers. With the tree structure, the throughput experienced by the descendant nodes will be determined by the performance of the slowest ancestor node. Furthermore, the failure of an ancestor node results in the suspension of the session of all the descendant nodes. This paper focuses on the transmission of data using multiple virtual forwarders, and suggests a scheme to overcome the drawbacks of the plain tree-based application layer multicast schemes. The proposed scheme elects multiple forwarders other than the parent node of the delivery tree. A receiver receives data from the multiple forwarders as well as the parent node and it can increase the amount of receiving data per time unit. The multiple forwarder helps a receiver to reduce the impact of the failure of an ancestor node. The proposed scheme suggests the forwarder selection algorithm to avoid the receipt of duplicate packets. We implemented the proposed scheme using MACEDON which provides a development environment for application layer multicast. We compared the proposed scheme with Bullet by applying the implementation in PlanetLab which is a global overlay network. The evaluation results show that the proposed scheme enhanced the throughput by 20 % and reduced the control overhead over 90 % compared with Bullet.
As WiBro service providers which provide a wireless multimedia communication service are selected, the commercial service will emerge in the near future. Although the use of efficient multicast technology for multimedia will be essentially required, it would be difficult to design the overall communication network in the early stage by using IP multicast due to technological or commercial issues. Application layer multicast schemes or hybrid multicast schemes also should be considered. In this paper, we propose a hybrid multicast scheme and evaluate its performance against typical IP multicast schemes on modelling of the WiBro network for one of WiBro service providers. We also propose a simulation method for the hybrid multicast on the simulation network for performance evaluation. If the number of mobile nodes reaches a certain point, the performance difference between the hybrid multicast and IP multicast is reduced significantly. We show that hybrid multicast technology can be applied for WiBro service without much performance degradation.

In this paper, we present an application layer protocol to support secure wireless Internet services, called Application Layer Security(ALS). The drawbacks of the two traditional approaches to secure wireless applications motivated the development of ALS. One is that in the conventional application-specific security protocol such as Secure HyperText Transfer Protocol(S-HTTP), security mechanism is included in the application itself. This gives a disadvantage that the security services are available only to that particular application. The other is that a separate protocol layer is inserted between the application and transport layers, as in the Secure Sockets Layer(SSL)/Transport Layer Security(TLS). In this case, all channel data are encrypted regardless of the specific application's requirements, resulting in much waste of network resources. To overcome these problems, ALS is proposed to be implemented on top of HTTP so that it is independent of the various transport layer protocols, and provides a common security interface with security applications so that it greatly improves the portability of security applications. In addition, since ALS takes advantages of well-known TLS mechanism, it eliminates the danger of malicious attack and provides applications with various security services such as authentication, confidentiality integrity and digital signature, and partial encryption. We conclude this paper with an example of applying ALS to the solution of end-to-end security in a present commercial wireless protocol stack, Wireless Application Protocol.

The overlay multicast that has been recently presented as an alternative for the IP multicast needs scheduling method that can apply the system resource and the network bandwidth for the many users. We propose a efficient overlay multicasting network policy for multimedia services with composite stream service topology. And in order to evaluate the ability of the proposed scheme's performance, We test the performance of multi_casting nodes with RTT values, the bandwidth attrition rate for building the network topology and MOR effects with Overcast[5] The result of simulation shows improves about $8{\sim}20%$ of performance.

Overlay multicast delivery method is a new approach in which multicast functionality is implemented at the end-hosts application layer in the timing of sparse deployment of IP multicast. However, existing overlay multicast protocols are not being standardization and many restrictions occur when delivering high capacity contents. Therefore, new delivery mechanism is required for the overlay multicast based high capacity contents delivery. In this paper. we separate group management and delivery management of overlay multicast and describe a capable group management. We also defined high speed delivery method better than that of existing overlay multicast through use of collaborated distribute downloading. This improved efficiency of massive contents transmission.
