Rheological Characterization of Hydrogen Peroxide Gel Propellant

  • An experimental investigation on the rheological behavior of gelled hydrogen peroxide at different ambient temperature (283.15, 293.15 and 303.15 K) was carried out in this study. The gel propellant was rheologically characterized using a rheometer, in the shear rate ranges of 1 to $20s^{-1}$, and 1 to $1000s^{-1}$. Hydrogen peroxide gel was found to be thixotropic in nature. The apparent viscosity value with some yield stress (in-case of shear rate 1 to $20s^{-1}$) drastically fell with the shear rate. In the case of the shear rate range of 1 to $20s^{-1}$, the apparent viscosity and yield stress of gel were significantly reduced at higher ambient temperatures. In the case of the shear rate range of 1 to $1000s^{-1}$, no significant effect of varying the ambient temperature on the gel apparent viscosity was observed. The up and down shear rate curves for hydrogen peroxide gel formed a hysteresis loop that showed no significant change with variation in temperature for both the 1 to $20s^{-1}$ and the 1 to $1000s^{-1}$ shear rate ranges. No significant change in the thixotropic index of gel was observed for different ambient temperatures, for both low and high shear rates. The gel in the 1 to $20s^{-1}$ shear rate range did not lead to a complete breakdown of gel structure, in comparison to that in the 1 to $1000s^{-1}$ shear rate range.

  • The role of viscosity index improver's(Ⅶ) additives for modem engine lubrication is complex. Under the condition of atmosphere or low shear rate, the characteristics of Ⅶ added lubricant is verified and quoted frequently for mathematical model of lubricant behavior. However, recent research shows that added lubricant has the characteristics of shear thinning at high shear rate condition although it performs well enough over the whole range of working temperature. At high shear rate, they show significant decrease of apparent viscosity irrespective of temperature. Many experimental researches verify that Ⅶ added lubricant shows boundary film layer formation on the solid surface as well as shear thinning effect by its polymeric molecular characteristics. The intend of our research is to verify the effects of Ⅶ from the viewpoint of continuum mechanics, because conventional Reynolds'equation with only pressure-viscosity relation cannot fully predict the lubricant behavior under the Ⅶ added condition. In these aspects, Reynolds'equation of Newtonian fluid model lacks the reflection of real fluid behavior and there is no way to explain the non-linear characteristics of Ⅶ added lubricant. In this research, we mathematically modeled the Ⅶ added lubricant behaviors which are the characteristics of non-Newtonian fluid behavior at high shear rate and boundary film formation on the solid surface. The consideration of elastic deformation in the contact region is also included in our computation and finally the converged film pressure and the film thickness with elastic deformation are obtained. The results are compared with those of Newtonian fluid model.

Shear strength behaviour of coral gravelly sand subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading

  • The paper presents an experimental study on the strength behaviour of a coral gravelly sand from Vietnam subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading. A series of direct shear tests were carried out to investigate the shear strength behaviour and the factors affecting the shear strength of the sand such as relative density, cyclic load, amplitude of the cyclic load and loading rate. The study results indicate that the shear strength parameters of the coral gravelly sand include not only internal friction angle but also apparent cohesion. These parameters vary with the relative density, cyclic load, the amplitude of the cyclic load and loading rate. The shear strength increases with the increase of the relative density. The shear strength increases after subjecting to cyclic loading. The amplitude of the cyclic load affects the shear strength of coral gravelly sand, the shear strength increases as the amplitude of the cyclic load increases. The loading rate has insignificantly effect on the shear strength of the coral gravelly sand.

Bacillus sp. K-1과 변이주들에 의해 생산된 Biopolymer의 물성에 미치는 온도 및 농도의 영향 (Effects of Temperature and Concentration on the Rheological Properties of the Biopolymer Produced by Bacillus sp. K-1 Strain and Mutants)

  • The rheological Voperties of biopolymers produced by Bacilli sp. K-1 and its mutant strains(KM-21, KM-83) were studied at the temperature ranges with 20∼80$^{\circ}C$, at the concenration of 2∼6%, at the pH ranges from 3.0 to 9.0 and at the shear rate of 9.3-930sec-1 The apparent viscosity of biopolymers was decreased with increasing shear rate, and thereby biopolymers showed pseudoplastic characteristics. It was found that the apparent viscosity models respected 19 temperature, concentration and both temperature and concentration were expressed by Arrhenius Model, Exponential Model and combined of the above two Models. Therefore, the apparent viscosity could be predictable by Arrhenius and Exponential Models with high R2.

Flow Routing in Prismatic Symmetrical Compound Channels by Applications of the Apparent Shear Force (ASF)

  • A new routing computer model for the symmetric compound channel called the ASRMCS(Apparent Shear Force Muskingum-Cunge Method in Symmetry) has been developed. The Muskingum-Cunge routing method is adapted. The Apparent Shear Force (ASF) between the deep main channel and the shallow floodplan flow is introduced while the flow is routed. The nonlinear parameter method is applied. The temporal and spatial increments are varied according to the flow rate. The adaptation of above schemes is tested against the routed hydrographs using the DAMBRK model. The results of general routing practice of Muskingum-Cunge Method(GPMC) are also compared with those of above two models. The results of the new model match remarkably well with those of DAMBRK. The routed hydrographs show a smooth variation from the inflow boundary condition without any distortions caused by the difference of cross-section shape. However, the results of GPMC, showing early rise and fall of routed hydrograph, have considerable differences from those of the ASFMCS and DAMBRK.

  • Electro-Rheological(ER) fluids change their apparent viscosity according to the electric field strength. Therefore, there are many practical applications using the ER fluids. ER effect on the dispersive system of polarizable fine powder/dielectric oil has been investigated. The electrical and rheological properties of starch based ER fluid were reported. Yield stress of the fluids were measured on the couette cell type rheometer as a function of electric fields, particle concetrations, and temperatures. The electric field is applied by high voltage DC power supply, The outer cup is connected to positive electrode(+) and the bob becomes ground(-). And the temperatures the viscosity(or shear stress) versus shear rates were measured. In this experiment shear rates were increased from 0 to 200s$^{-1}$ in 2 minutes. This thesis presents Bingham properties of ER fluids subjected to temperature variations. The temperature dependence of the viscosity was determined for ER fluids consisting of 35 weight % starch particles in automatic transmission oil.

외부전단력 적용에 의한 균일대칭복단면에서의 하도추적 (Flow Routing in Prismatic Symmetrical Compound Channels by Applications of Apparent Shear Force)

  • Apparent Shea Force(ASF:외부전단력) 을 적용 균일대칭복단면의 하도추적을 위한 새로운 컴퓨터 모델 ASFMCS가 개발되었다. 기본공식은 Muskingum-Cunge방법이 이용되었으며 ASFFMCS의 특징은 복합단면에서 하도추적이 수행되는 과정에서 중앙저수부와 홍수터 사이에 발생하는 ASF가 고려되었다. 비선형 매개변수를 적용하고 유량변화에 따라 시간과 공간의 차분의 크기가 변하도록 (Variable Time Step and Spatial step법) 모델링이 되었다. ASFMCS의 결과는 DAMBRK와 기존의 단면분리법을 사용한 GPMC 모델에 의해 발생한 수문곡선과 비교되었다. ASFMCS와 DAMBRK의 결과는 같은 경계조건 및 입력조건에 대해 거의 같은 수문곡선을 발생시켰으나 GPMC의 결과와는 상당한 차이를 보였다.

Processing parallel-disk viscometry data in the presence of wall slip

  • This paper describes a two-step Tikhonov regularization procedure for converting the steady shear data generated by parallel-disk viscometers, in the presence of wall slip, into a shear stress-shear rate function and a wall shear stress-slip velocity functions. If the material under test has a yield stress or a critical wall shear stress below which no slip is observed the method will also provide an estimate of these stresses. Amplification of measurement noise is kept under control by the introduction of two separate regularization parameters and Generalized Cross Validation is used to guide the selection of these parameters. The performance of this procedure is demonstrated by applying it to the parallel disk data of an oil-in-water emulsion, of a foam and of a mayonnaise.

구약감자 Glucomannan 현탁액의 유동특성 (Rheological Properties of Konjac Glucomannan Dispersons)

  • 구약감자(Amorphophallus konjac)로부터 glucomannan 현탁액을 제조하고 그 유동특성을 구명하였다. 구약감자 glucomannan 현탁액은 항복응력이 없는 비뉴우톤성유체의 거동을 보여주었으며 다른 다당류 현탁액보다 일정 전단속도에서의 전단응력이 대체적으로 높게 나타났다. n값의 변화로 보아 구약감자분말 현탁액은 팽창유체의 경향을 약간 보인 반면 예비정제 구약감자분말 및 정제 glucomannan 현탁액의 경우는 의가소성유체의 거동을 보여주었다. 온도가 높아짐에 따라 구약감자 glucomannan 현탁액은 일정 전단속도에서의 전단응력의 크기가 감소하는 경향을 보여주었으나 그 감소정도는 비교적 균일하였다. 구약감자 glucomannan 현탁액은 pH 7에서 가장 점성이 높았으며 pH가 이보다 높아지거나 낮아지면 점성이 약간씩 감소하였다. 또한 1%까지의 식염첨가에 의해서는 점성변화가 거의 나타나지 않는 반면 10%까지의 설탕첨가에 의해서는 점성이 감소하다 그후 증가하는 양상을 보여주었다.

Penetration behavior of biopolymer aqueous solutions considering rheological properties

  • The rheological and penetration characteristics of sodium alginate and xanthan gum aqueous solutions were analyzed for the development of biopolymer-based injection materials. The results of viscosity measurements for the rheological characteristics analysis show that all aqueous biopolymer solutions exhibit a tendency for shear-thinning, i.e., the apparent viscosity decreases as the shear rate increases. In addition, a regression analysis using several models (Power-law, Casson, Sisko, and Cross) was applied to the shear-thinning fluid analysis results, the highest accuracy was determined by applying the power-law model. The micromodel experiment for the penetration characteristics analysis determined that all biopolymer aqueous solutions show higher pore saturation than water, and that pore saturation tends to increase as the flow rate and concentration increases. When comparing the rheological and penetration characteristics of the biopolymer aqueous solution used in this study, the xanthan gum aqueous solution showed a fully developed shear-thinning tendency, unlike the sodium alginate aqueous solution. This tendency is considered to have the advantage of enhancement injectability and pore saturation.
