In recent years, research into medicinal herbs with antioxidative activities has increased. Chrysanthemum morifolium and Chrysanthemum indicum are aromatic herb plants and that have long been used in traditional Vietnamese medicine. This study aims to evaluate the chemical compositions and antioxidative activities of essential oils hydrodistilled from the flower heads of C. morifolium and C. indicum. The chemical compositions of the essential oils were compared using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis. The antioxidative activity was determined and evaluated spectroscopically by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, metal chelating activity, reducing power, and total antioxidant capacity assays. According to the GC/MS results, chrysanthenone was predominant in the essential oils of both C. morifolium (64.14%) and C. indicum (32.02%). This is the first report of the identification of chrysanthenone as a major constituent of the essential oil of C. morifolium. Both Chrysanthemum oils were also revealed to possess antioxidant potential, exhibiting high antioxidative activities. In particular, the DPPH radical scavenging activities of the C. morifolium and C. indicum oils at a concentration of 100 mg/mL were 76.9 and 83.2%, respectively. The metal chelating values of C. morifolium and C. indicum were 0.85 and 0.76, whereas the reducing power values of that at 100 mg/mL were 0.76 and 0.71, respectively. This study provides the chemical properties of the essential oils of both C. morifolium and C. indicum grown in Vietnam and their potential antioxidant capacity.
The outer bark of Prunus sargentii was collected, air-dried and extracted with 70% aqueous acetone. Then it was successively partitioned with n-hexane, dichloromethane ($CH_2Cl_2$), ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and $H_2O$. From the EtOAc soluble fraction, four compounds were isolated by the repeated Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. The isolated compounds were determined as (+)-catechin (1), (-)-epicatechin (2), taxifolin (3), and neosakuranin (4) by the spectroscopic analysis including $^1H$, $^{13}C$-NMR, and 2D-NMR spectrometers. The antioxidative activities on the isolated compounds and the separated fractions were evaluated by DPPH radical scavenging assay. The crude, EtOAc, and $H_2O$ soluble fractions indicated good antioxidative potential compared to the $CH_2Cl_2$ and n-hexane soluble fractions.
The colored sweet potato, particularly purple sweet potato, has been well known to contain anthocyanins abundantly. This study was conducted to examine the antioxidant properties of purple sweet potato. The chopped purple sweet potato was extracted 2 times with water or acetone for 18 hours at $28^{\circ}C$. The antioxidative potential of each solvent extract was assessed by DPPH free radical scavenging activity assay, FRAP assay, and total phenolic contents. The results showed that both extracts had not only high DPPH free radical scavenging activity but had high level of total phenolic compounds. Furthermore, both solvent extracts were found to have antioxidative effects in human colon cancer cells (HCT 116, HT 29) in DCFDA assay. The notable antioxidant activity of purple sweet potato suggests its significant health benefit and deserves further study to develop into functional food ingredient.
The methanol extracts from 60 plant extracts were prepared and evaluated for their antioxidative activity. Arctium lappa, Diospyros kaki, Eugenia caryophyllata, Melia azedarach and Forsythia suspensa showed the inhibitory activity against lipid peroxidation. Caesalpinia sappan, Crataegus pinnatifida, Eugenia caryophyllata, Gleditsia japonica, Osmunda japonica, Rhus javanica and Sanguisorba officinalis showed the highest inhibitory activity against DPPH radical formation. In particular, Eugenia caryophyllata demonstrated strong inhibitory activity on the lipid peroxidation and free radicals. The results suggested that selected plant extracts have a potential as natural antioxidant.
Antioxidative compounds contained in roasted safflower seeds were investigated. Six phenolic compounds, N-feruloylserotonin, N-(p-coumaroyl) serotonin, matairesinol, 8'-hydroxyarctigenin, acacetin 7-Ο-β-D-glucoside(tilianine) and acacetin were isolated and identified from the extract of seeds. The inhibitory effects of six phenolic compounds on 1,1-dipheny1-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) radical and lipid peroxidation induced by H₂O₂/FeSO₄in rat liver microsomes were determined. Two serotonins showed more potent DPPH radical scavenging activity, and a stronger inhibitory effect on the lipid peroxidation than that of α-tocopherol. In addition, acacetin and matairesinol also considerably inhibited lipid peroxidation, while 2-hydroxy-arctigenin and tilianine were inactive. These results suggest that phenolic compounds, including serotonins, lignans and flavonoids in the roasted safflower seeds can be used as potential dietary natural antioxidants.
We investigated antioxidative activity of the ethanol extracts of leaves of Cornus walteri Wanger (CWE) by treated enzyme in human dermal fibroblast (HDFs) irradiated by UVB. We examined the in vitro chemical and cellular antioxidant activities of CWE in HDFs. We employed scavenging assay for the 1,1-diphenyl-2,5-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals and cellular antioxidative activity of CWE, and we was investigated in $H_2O_2$-treated or UVB-irradiated HDFs. The CWE effectively scavenged DPPH radicals ($IC_{50}$$7.03{\pm}0.4{\mu}g/mL$) when compared to the scavenging activities of L-ascorbic acid ($IC_{50}$$4.69{\pm}0.3{\mu}g/mL$). CWE reduced UVB-induced cellular damage in HS68 cells by MTT assay and inhibited intracellular ROS generation in dose-dependent manner. In addition, CWE also attenuated the elevated levels of 8-isoprostane resulting from UVB-mediated oxidative stress. Collectively, these results suggest that CWE could be a new potential candidate as antioxidant against UVB-induced oxidative stress in HDFs.

The antioxidative activity of seven different acylated anthocyanin pigments isolated from grape, sweet potato, eggplant and red cabbage was evaluated bvy using linoleic acid autoxidation and rat liver microsomal systems. The acylated anthocyanins were isolated and purified by Amberlite SAD-7, ODS and Sephadex LH-20 column omatography, and preparative HPLC. Most of acylated anthocyanisns exhibited antioxidative activity as strong as $\alpha$-tocoperol, and especially peonidin3-O--(6-O-trans-caffeyl)-2-O-(6-O-trans-feuloylglucopyranosyl)-$\beta$-D-glucopyranosyl-5-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside from purple sweet potato showed the strongest activity, comparable to BHA (not significant, p<0.05) in the linoleic acid system. Meanwhile, two acylated anthocyanins from the pericarps of grape and eggplant inhibited considerably the MDA formation from rat liver microsomal lipid peroxidation induced by FeSO$_4$/$H_2O$$_2$. In particular, malvidin 3-O-(6-O-p-coumaroyl)-$\beta$-D-glucopyranosde from grape pericarps showed the strongest antioxidant activity, comparable to $\alpha$-tocopherol (not significant, p<0.05). These results suggest that the acylated anthocyanins from fruits and vegetables can be used as potential dietary ntioxidants and natural colorants.

Lespedeza cuneata G. Don is a traditional herb that has been associated with multiple biological activities. In this study, we investigated the antioxidative/antiaging activities and performed an active component analysis of the non-fermented and fermented (using Lactobacillus pentosus) extracts of Lespedeza cuneata G. Don. The antioxidative activities of the fermented extract were higher than those of non-fermented extracts. The elastase inhibitory activity, inhibitory effects on UV-induced MMP-1 expression, and ability to promote type I procollagen synthesis were investigated in Hs68 human fibroblasts cells. These tests also revealed that the fermented extract had increased antiaging activities compared with the non-fermented extract. A component analysis of the ethyl acetate fractions of non-fermented and fermented extracts was performed using TLC, HPLC, and LC/ESI-MS/MS to observe changes in the components before and after fermentation. Six components that were different before and after fermentation were investigated. It was thought that kaempferol and quercetin were converted from kaempferol glucosides and quercetin glucosides, respectively, via bioconversion with the fermentation strain. These results indicate that the fermented extract of L. cuneata G. Don has potential for use as a natural cosmetic material with antioxidative and antiaging effects.
