We investigated antifungal and antioxidant activity of Equsetum arvense L. The sterile stems of Equsetum arvense L. were extracted with methanol and then fractionated with n-hexane, ethyl acetate, butanol, and water. And their antifungal activities were determined by using paper disk diffusion method and (1. 3)β-glucan synthase inhibitory activity assay, and antioxidant activities were determined by using DPPH method. The ethyl acetate fraction showed antifungal activity on Candidas albacans in both disk diffusion and enzyme assays. This also showed antioxidant activity in DPPH assay. Further fractionation with ethyl acetate fraction was performed to obtain effective fractions. 4, 5, 6 and 7 fractions showed the significant antifungal antivities, and, 4 and 5 fractions showed the strongest antioxidative activity.
In this study, we evaluated antifungal and antioxidant activities of condensed liquid of volatile organic compounds generated during the drying process of Chamaecyparis obtuse. Condensed liquid of volatile organic compounds were extracted with hexane and ethyl acetate, respectively. The extracts were used for antifungal activity at range from 100 to 500 mg/L Antifungal activity of extracts increased as the extracts concentration increased, the activity against tested dermatophytes was high at 500 mg/L. Among extract solvents, antifungal activity was higher at hexane extract than the ethyl acetate. Especially, the antifungal activity against Trichophyton rubrum was higher than other tested dermatophytes. Antioxidant activity was 90% above 25 mg/L regardless of the extractive solvents, while the hexane extract showed high antioxidant activity below 25 mg/L. Major compounds of hexane extract were torreyol, alpha-cadinol, and tau-cadinol. However, major compounds of ethyl acetate extract were alpha-amorphene, alpha-cadinol, and gamma-cadinene.
In this study, we analyzed the antifungal activities of five essential oils (clove, rosemary, thyme, basil, and oregano) against three fungi (Penicillium oxalicum, Penicillium commune, and Cladosporium cladosporioides) isolated from farm-type fermented meat products Though their antifungal activities differed for each fungus, thyme had the greatest effect. Notably, C. cladosporioides showed the highest sensitivity to essential oils, and growth inhibitory effects were greater than for the other two strains. Additionally, ABTS, DPPH, and FRAP analysis confirmed that the five essential oils studied had antioxidant activity. ABTS analysis showed that clove (75%) and oregano (75%) oils had the highest antioxidant activities (both 93.7%). DPPH analysis showed that clove (75%) and rosemary (75%) oils had significantly greater antioxidant activities (both 93.8%) than thyme, basil, or oregano oils. FRAP results indicated that clove and basil oils were the strongest reductants. Comprehensive comparative analysis indicated that clove oil had more antioxidant activity than the other four essential oils. Overall, the study shows that the excellent antifungal properties of clove oil could be harnessed to produce safe fermented meat products by preventing rancidity and mold contamination.
This study was peformed to determine the antioxidant, antimicrobial activity and antifungal of the cambodian mushroom, Phellinus linteus, in various concentrations from the mushroom extracts. It's extracts were found to cause significant free radical scavenging effects on DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl). This extracts exhibited in vitro broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity of Gram-negative, Gram-positive bacteria and without antifungal activity. On the other hand, the extracts had not significant hemolytic activity against human red blood cells. These results indicate cambodian mushroom, Phellinus inteus having antioxidant and antimicrobial activity without hemolytic activity maybe useful as therapeutic agents.
The nematicidal, antifungal and antioxidant activities of methanol extracts from six Vietnamese native medicinal plants were evaluated by various assays in vitro. Of the plant extracts tested, Terminalia nigrovenulosa was found to possess the highest activity when compared to the others. The leaves and bark of T. nigrovenulosa showed strong inhibitory activity against Meloidogyne incognita and Fusarium solani. The DPPH (1,1-Diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl) radical scavenging, reducing power and total antioxidant activities of T. nigrovenulosa bark were higher than that of the remainder plant extracts. Chitinase activity of these plants was also investigated using SDS-PAGE. The results obtained in the present study indicate that T. nigrovenulosa leaf extracts are the greatest potential source as nematicides and fungicides for the control of M. incognita and F. solani. In particularly, T. nigrovenulosa bark extracts could be used as a potential source of commercially viable levels of natural antioxidant.

Capacity of the analytical/quantitative evaluation techniques to satisfy both qualitative and quantitative considerations for effective extraction of marigold oleoresins/xanthophylls and their potential as anti-mycotic and antioxidant activity was assessed. Accelerated solvent extraction (ASE), Soxhlet extraction (SE), Supercritical fluid extraction (SCFE), Cold extraction (CE), and ultrasonically assisted extraction (USE) techniques were evaluated for extraction of oleoresin/xanthophyll content from Tagetes erecta (Var. Pusa Narangi Genda) with respect to solvent consumption, extraction time, reproducibility, and yield. Followed by the antifungal and antioxidant activity evaluation. The overall yield of Tagetes oleoresin was higher in ASE (64.5 g/kg) followed by SE (57.3 g/kg), USE (50.7 g/kg), SCFE (45.3 g/kg) and CE (31.6 g/kg). The lutein esters represented more than 80% of the constituents. Further, xanthophyll/ lutein content in oleoresin was found to be quite higher in HPLC (r2 = 0.996) analysis than in the AOAC recommended UV spectrophotometer analysis. The oleoresin exhibited moderate antioxidant activity (DPPH assay) and antifungal activity against three phytopathogenic fungi. Based on the various parameters, the reproducibility of ASE was better (0.3-8.0%) than that of SE (0.5-12.9%), SCFE (0.2-9.4%), USE (0.3-12.4%) and CE (0.8-15.3%). ASE with (RSD 1.6%) is preferred being faster, reproducible, uses less solvent, robust and automation allows sequential extraction of the sample in less time.
The antifungal activity of crude methanolic extract and fractions from Yucca smalliana Fern. leaves, roots and flowers were investigated in vitro against a panel of plant pathogenic fungi. The minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) was determined by an agar dilution method. Preliminary liquid culture and agar plate assays showed that the growth of Fu sarium oxysporum, Phytophthora capsici, Rhizoctonia solani and Botrytis cinerea were inhibited by Y. smalliana extracts. The extracts from flowers and leaves showed antifungal activity of 64.0% and 34.0% against F. oxysporum, 66.0% and 62.0% against P. capsici, and 27.0% and 41.0% against B. cinerea, respectively. The methanolic extract from Y. smallina leaves in distilled water was fractionated using solvents of increasing polarity: hexane, ethyl acetate and butanol. These fractions had a broad spectrum of antifungal activity, found to reside entirely in the butanol and aqueous fraction. The aqueous fraction showed inhibition rate of 60.0, 67.8, 84.6 and 58.3% against F. oxysporum, R. solani, C. gloeosporioides, and B. cinerea, respectively, and the butganol fracgtion showed 36.0, 46.0, 66.1 and 58.3%, respectively. Phenolics(e.g. flavonoids, steroids and terpenoids) were observed in the thin layer profile of the different fractions. Leave extract showed a prominent antioxidant activity totally scavenging the free radical of DPPH at a concentration of 1 mg/ml.

Several species of Aquilaria and Gyrinops are native to Indonesia and well known as agarwood-producing trees with a high economic value. Their bioactive compounds have a wide spectrum of uses, such as in medicine and cosmetics. These genera have undergone extensive search for novel bioactive compounds. The purpose of this study was to isolate, identify, and characterize the endophytic fungi community associated with Aquilaria malaccensis, A. microcarpa, Gyrinops versteegii, and A. crassna trees and investigate their bioactive properties as antioxidant agents and antagonists. A total of 50 fungi were successfully isolated from different tissues of the four species of agarwood-producing trees. Two isolates exhibited strong antioxidant activity, namely, Apodus oryzae (R2MC3A, $IC_{50}$ 60.92 mg/mL) and Diaporthe sp. (P1DS1[C], $IC_{50}$ 76.65 mg/mL). Two isolates, Pestalotiopsis theae (P3BS3[B]) and Curvularia sp. (P2CD3A), showed >75% antifungal activity against pathogenic Fusarium solani. The results revealed that endophytic fungi associated with the studied agarwood-producing trees had potential antioxidant and antifungal activities for further applications in biotechnology.
