  • In today's manufacturing industries, the demand for light non-ferrous materials is considerable due to the need to improve productivity and manufacturability. Since the surface roughness of a material is important for improving the functionality of machined parts, various techniques for surface treatments have been developed to obtain non-ferrous materials with low roughness. A superfinishing method utilizing polishing films is generally applied to the anodized surface of Al7075 in order to improve its roughness. The objective of this research is to determine through experiment the parameters that facilitate the shortest processing time, using a superfinishing method, for reaching a roughness of Ra $0.2{\mu}m$. This objective is met by applying the Taguchi method in the experiments. Through the experiments of superfinishing, the effectiveness of the parameters adopted for the surface treatment is demonstrated.

  • Friction and wear behavior of tungsten oxide nanorods (TONs) was investigated using friction force microscopy(FFM) employing colloidal probes instead of conventional sharp tips. Vertically well-ordered TONs with 40 nm diameter, 130 nm length and 100 nm pitch width were synthesized on an anodic aluminium oxide substrate using two step electrochemical anodizing processes. The colloidal probe (diameter 20 ${\mu}m$) attached at the free end of tipless cantilever was oscillated(scanned) against a stationary surface of vertically aligned TONs with various scan speeds (1.2 ${\mu}m/s$, 3.0 ${\mu}m/s$ and 6.0 ${\mu}m/s$) and sliding cycles (100, 200 and 400) under normal load of 800 nN. The friction force and wear depth decreased with the increase of the scan speed. Plastically deformed thin layers were formed and sparsely deposited on the worn nonorod surface. The lower wear rate of the TONs with the longer oscillating cycles was attributed to the decreased real contact pressure due to the increase of real contact area between the colloidal probe and the TONs.

  • We have replicated nanopillar arrays using injection molding process of active heating and cooling method by several peltier devices. The injection melding has a high accuracy ed good reproducibility that are essential for mass production at low cost. Conventional molding processes widely use the water-based mold heating and air cooling methods. However, in case of replication for nano-patterned structures, it caused several defects such as air-flow mark, non-fill, sticking and tearing. In this study, periodic nano-scale patterns are replicated by using injection molding with Peltier devices. Porous nano-scale patterns, which have pore diameter range from 120nm to 150nm, were fabricated by using anodizing process. Periodic nano-pore structures ( $20mm\;{\times}\;20mm$) were used as a mold stamp of injection molding. Finally, PMMA with nanopillar arrays was obtained by injection molding process. By using the Peltier devices, the temperature of locally adiabatic molds can be dramatically controlled and the quality of the molded patterns can be slightly improved.

  • AAO(Anodic Aluminum Oxidation) method has been known that it is practically useful for the fabrication of nano-structures and makes it possible to fabricate the highly ordered nano masters on large surface and even on the 2.5 or 3D surface at low cost comparing to the expensive e-beam lithography or the conventional silicon processing. In this study, by using the multi-step anodizing and etching processes, highly ordered nano patterned master with concave shapes was fabricated. By varying the processing parameters, such as initial matter and chemical conditions; electrical and thermal conditions; time scheduling; and so on, the size and the pitch of the nano pattern can be controlled. Consequently, various alumina/aluminum nano structures can be easily available in any size and shape by optimized anodic oxidation in various aqueous acids. In order to replicate nano patterned master, the resulting good filled uniform nano molded structure through electro-forming process shows the validity of the fabricated nano pattern masters.

  • Over the last two decades, microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of metallic materials has received considerable attention due to its serious effects on industrial field. In this context, it is important to devise control methods which inhibit biofilm formation on various metallic compounds and are compatible with environment. It was change of various conditions (duty cycle, current density, $AgNO_3$ concentration and pH) for injection of Ag particles in anodized Aluminum alloy pore using pulsed current. Optimal condition was obtained by means of FE-SEM, ICP analysis etc. The antibacterial metal's specimen were manufactured under optimal condition and this specimen were tested the antibacterial characterization and anticorrosion characterization. In result of test, we can confirmed that the antibacterial characterization and anticorrosion characterization of the specimens of injected Ag particles in anodized Aluminum alloy pore using pulsed current were better than the anodized Aluminum alloy specimens.

  • Stainless steel is being used widely for various purposes due to its good corrosion resistance. There has been much research to produce colored stainless steel by several methods such as anodizing and ion plating. In this experiment, we coated TiN(C,O,H)films SUS304 substraate with the DC magnetron spttering system made by Leybold Heraeus and studied the interlater structure and abhesive strength of the films as a function of additional gases, acetylene, hydrogen and oxygen. When the acetylene gas was added into the chamber, the specimen with the interlayer phase had good adhesion due to the toughness of the $\gamma'-Fe_4N$ plase induced from a solid solution of carbon atoms, while low adhesion appeared on the specimen of the non interlayer phase. The formation of the interlayer phase($\gamma'-Fe_4N$) was due to hydrogen embrittlement and internal stress induced by $\gamma'-Fe_4N$ formation in the interlayer. We could fine the interlayer phase ($\gamma'-Fe_4N$) at the interface between the film and the substrate of the TEM image when $\gamma'-Fe_4N$ was detected by the X-ray duffraction metheod.

When the thiness was over 1.64$\mu\textrm{m}$, good pit resistance could be obtained and its improvement was especially affected by perfect surfaceface. Typical TiN anodic polarzation curves of very unstable corrosion were observed by $Ti_xN$ film on the glass and perfect film of 3.28$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness.

  • In this study, electrochemical damage behaviors with flow rate were investigated for anodized 5083 aluminum alloy in seawater. As the results of anodic polarization experiments and potentiostatic experiments at +1.0 V (vs. SSCE), the non-flow condition presented largely damaged surface resulting from a tendency of local pitting damage. Under various flow rate conditions, however, less surface damages under the application of anodic potential was obtained which is attributed to no accumulation of $H^+$ and $Cl^-$ ions on the surface. On the other hand, the results of the potentiostatic experiments at -1.0 V (vs. SSCE) with flow rate showed that anodized 5083 aluminum alloys could achieve the effective cathodic protection by low cathodic protection current density less than $2.61{\times}10^{-7}A/cm^2$ even under high flow rate of 1 m/s.

  • The formation of anodic oxide film of titanium (Ti) was studied at a variety of electrolyte concentrations and current density to clarify their effects on morphology, microstructure and composition of Ti oxide layer. For the analysis of the Ti oxide films, a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used. The results showed that the concentration of phosphoric acid played a crucial role in the crystalline structure of the Ti oxide layer while the current density gave a critical effect on the thickness and diameter of its pore. In particular, the crystalline anatase phase with a thickness larger than $2{\mu}m$, which is quite desirable for a dental implant application, could be readily prepared at the phosphoric acid concentration of 0.5 M and current density higher than $2.0A/dm^2$.

  • In this work, we study physical and mechanical properties of oxide films formed on AZ91D magnesium alloy by plasma anodization at different temperatures. It is found that the higher the electrolyte temperature, the lower is the breakdown voltage of oxide layer. This is probably because films formed at higher temperatures are thinner and denser. Moreover, electrolyte temperature plays an important role in the physical properties of the films. As the electrolyte temperature increases from 20 to $50^{\circ}C$, the hardness of the oxide layer increases. Friction test against steel balls indicates that wear scars become narrower for films formed at higher temperatures because the films are harder, as indicated by the Vickers hardness. The thinner and denser nature of the oxide film formed at $50^{\circ}C$ is also advantageous for heat transfer when film is used as a heat sink. Laser flash test results show very fast heat transfer for AZ91D with plasma anodized oxide layer formed at higher temperatures.
