  • Prevention of crevice corrosion was studied for STS 304 stainless steel using a Mg-alloy galvanic anode in solutions with various specific resistivity. The crevice corrosion and corrosion protection characteristics of the steel was investigated by the electrochemical polarization and galvanic corrosion tests. Experimental results show that the crevice corrosion of STS 304 stainless steel does not occur in solutions of high specific resistivity, but it occurs in solutions of low specific resistivity like in solutions with resistivities of 30, 60 and $115{\Omega}{\cdot}m$. With decreasing specific resistivity of the solution, the electrode potential of STS 304 stainless steel in the crevice is lowered. The potential of STS 304 stainless steel in the crevice after coupling is cathodically polarized more by decreasing specific resistivity indicating that the crevice corrosion of STS 304 stainless steel is prevented by the Mg-alloy galvanic anode.

  • Si-C materials were synthesized by the heating the mixture of silicon and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The electrochemical properties of the Si-C materials as the high capacitive anode materials of lithium secondary batteries were evaluated by the galvanostatic charge-discharge test through 2032 type $Si-C{\mid}Li$ coin cells. Charge-discharge tests were performed at C/10 hour rate(C = 372 mAh/g). Initial discharge and charge capacities of $Si-C{\mid}Li$ cell using a Si-C material derived from PVDF(20wt.%) were found to be 1,830 and 526 mAh/g respectively. The initial discharge-charge characteristics of the developed Si-C electrode were analyzed by the electrochemical galvanostatic test adopting the capacity limited charge cut-off condition(GISOC). The range of reversible specific capacity IIE(intercalation efficiency at initial discharge-charge) and IICs(surface irreversible specific capacity) were 216 mAh/g, 68 % and 31 mAh/g, respectively.

  • We introduce a new synthesis method to prepare small TiO2 nanoparticles with a narrow particle size distribution, which is achieved by electron beam (E-beam) irradiation. The effects of E-beam irradiation on the synthesis of TiO2 nanoparticles and the electrochemical performance of TiO2 nanoparticles as alternative anode materials for Li-ion batteries are investigated. The TiO2 nanoparticles induced by E-beam irradiation present better cycling performance and rate capability than the TiO2 nanoparticles synthesized by normal hydrolysis reaction. The better electrochemical performance is attributed to small particle size and narrow particle size distribution, resulting in the large surface area that provides innumerable reaction sites and short diffusion length for Li+ through TiO2 nanoparticles.

  • The adventages of Li alloys have attracted the attention of many research groups, many of which have investigated tin-based alloys [1-2], Despite interesting performances of these, the irreversible capacity loss systematically observed on the first cycle for these compounds is a main drawback for their use as anode materials in lithium ion cells. Not only Sn is efficient in forming alloys with Li, Si can also react with Li to form alloys with a high Li/Si ratio, like Li$\_$22/Si$\_$5/ at 400$^{\circ}C$. It corresponds to a capacity of 4200mAh/g. Electrochemical Li-Si reaction occurs between 0 and 0.3 V against Li/Li$\^$+/, so that high-energy density battery can be realized. Despite the high theoretical capacity of elements like Si, however, particles of the alloys crack and fragment due to the repeated alloying and do-alloying which occurs as cell are charged and discharged. The research groups of Muggins [3] and Besenhard [4] have proposed that the volume expansion due to the insertion of Li can be reduced in micro- and submicro-structured matrix alloys. For this reason, the research group of J.R. Dahn investigated Sn/Mo sequential sputter deposition to prepare nanocomposites [5]. In this study, we investigated the characterization and the electrochemical characteristics of sequentially sputtered Si/Mo multilayer for microbattery anode.

  • NiO-YSZ anode-supported single cell was prepared by spin-coating YSZ and LSM slurries as electrolyte and cathode, respectively. Dense YSZ electrolyte film was successfully prepared on the porous NiO-YSZ anode substrate by tuning pre-sintering temperature of NiO-YSZ and co-firing temperature. The thickness of YSZ film was controlled by the solid content of slurry and coating cycles. The experimental conditions affecting on the thickness of YSZ film was discussed. Single cells with the active electrode area ${\sim}0.8\;cm^2$ were prepared by spin-coating the cathode layers of LSM-YSZ mixture and LSM consequently as well. The effects of the pre-sintering temperature and thus the microstructure of NiO-YSZ substrate on the current-voltage characteristics of co-fired cell were investigated.

  • Corrosion properties of Al-0.3Ga-0.3Sn, Al-0.3Mn-0.3Ga, and Al-0.3Mn-0.3Sn alloys were examined to develop an anode material for Al-air battery with alkaline aqueous or ethanol electrolyte. The results of potentiodynamic polarization tests showed that the electrode potential of the Al alloys were lower than the pure Al, implying the cell voltage can be increased by using one of these alloys for an anode in 4 M KOH aqueous solution. The corrosion rate appeared to be increased by alloying Ga but to be reduced by Sn and Mn in the aqueous solution. The ethanol solution is expected to improve the cell performance in that the electrode potential and the corrosion rate of Al were lower in ethanol solution than in aqueous solution. However the Al-(Ga, Sn, Mn) alloys are not favorable in ethanol solution because of the high potential and corrosion rate.

  • SiOx was prepared from a mixture of Si and SiO2 via high-energy ball milling as a negative electrode material for Li-ion batteries. The molar ratio of Si to SiO2 as precursors and the milling time were varied to identify the synthetic condition that could exhibit desirable anode performances. With an appropriate milling time, the material showed a unique microstructure in which amorphous Si nanoparticles were intimately embedded within the SiO2 matrix. The interface between the Si and SiO2 was composed of silicon suboxides with Si oxidation states from 0 to +4 as proven by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical analysis. With the addition of a conductive carbon (Super P carbon black) as a coating material, the SiOx/C manifested superior specific capacity to a commercial SiOx/C composite without compromising its cycle-life performance. The simple mechanochemical method described in this study will shed light on cost-effective synthesis of high-capacity silicon oxides as promising anode materials.

  • We design Ge-Al multilayer assemblies as anode materials for Li-ion batteries, in which Ge and Al thin films are alternately deposited by a radio sputtering method. By sandwiching Ge layers between Al layer, the cyclability, rate capability, and capacity of Ge are improved significantly. The success of the Ge-Al multilayer is attributed to the Al films. To maintain the integrity of electrical contact, Al acts as an elastic layer, which can expand or shrink with the Ge film upon lithiation or delithiation. In addition, the presence of the Al film on the surface can prevent direct contact of Ge and electrolyte, thereby reducing the growth of a SEI layer. Importantly, with high electrical and ionic conductivities, the Al film provides efficient electrical and ionic routes for electrons and Li-ions to access the Ge film, promoting a high specific capacity and high rate capability for Ge.

  • Developing novel anode materials to replace the Pt anode currently used in electrolytic reduction is an important issue on pyroprocessing. In this study, the electrochemical behavior of TiN was investigated as the conductive ceramic anode which evolves O2 gas during the reaction. The feasibility and stability of the TiN anode was examined during the electrolytic reduction of UO2. The TiN anode could electrochemically convert UO2 to metallic U in a LiCl–Li2O molten salt electrolyte. No oxidation of TiN was observed during the reaction; however, the formation of voids in the bulk section appeared to limit the lifetime of the TiN anode.

  • To investigate the optimum x-ray tube design for the dental radiology, factors affecting x-ray beam characteristics such as tungsten target thickness and anode angle were evaluated. Another goal of the study was to addresses the anode heel effect and off-axis spectra for different target angles. MCNPX has been utilized to simulate the diagnostic x-ray tube with the aim of predicting optimum target angle and angular distribution of x-ray intensity around the x-ray target. For simulation of x-ray spectra, MCNPX was run in photon and electron using default values for PHYS:P and PHYS:E cards to enable full electron and photon transport. The x-ray tube consists of an evacuated 1 mm alumina envelope containing a tungsten anode embedded in a copper part. The envelope is encased in lead shield with an opening window. MCNPX simulations were run for x-ray tube potentials of 70 kV. A monoenergetic electron source at the distance of 2 cm from the anode surface was considered. The electron beam diameter was 0.3 mm striking on the focal spot. In this work, the optimum thickness of tungsten target was $3{\mu}m$ for the 70 kV electron potential. To determine the angle with the highest photon intensity per initial electron striking on the target, the x-ray intensity per initial electron was calculated for different tungsten target angles. The optimum anode angle based only on x-ray beam flatness was 35 degree. It should be mentioned that there is a considerable trade-off between anode angle which determines the focal spot size and geometric penumbra. The optimized thickness of a target material was calculated to maximize the x-ray intensity produced from a tungsten target materials for a 70 keV electron energy. Our results also showed that the anode angle has an influencing effect on heel effect and beam intensity across the beam.
