  • It has been reported that there is a significant positive relationship between the unexpected earnings on the earnings announcement date and the cumulative abnormal returns following the earnings announcement date. This study investigates whether the results of prior studies are because the public announcement of shareholders' meeting date was selected as the event date instead of either the preliminary earnings disclosure date or the profit/loss change announcement date. The results of this study are as follows. First, post-earnings-announcement drift(PEAD) occurs when unexpected earnings were computed based on the prior period earnings and the public announcement of the shareholders' meeting date as the profit disclosure date. Second, when analyzing the PEAD with the unexpected earnings calculated using the financial analysts' forecasts, no PEAD has been found both on the date of the shareholders' meeting and the earlier date of the preliminary earnings disclosure, profit/loss change announcement, or the public announcement of the shareholders' meeting. Foster et al. (1984) analyze the PEAD using time series model and earnings forecasting model and suggest that the PEAD appears only in the time series model. In this study, too, in the case of using analysts' profit forecasts, the lack of the PEAD shows that the PEAD can be changed according to the method of measuring the unexpected earnings.

Previous studies provided mixed results on the synergy effect of M&A This study provides investigation on 39 mergers occurred over the sample period from 2000 to 2001. In this study, event study methodology arc used to calculate abnormal return(AR) and cumulative abnormal return(CAR) based on mean-adjusted model. The testing period of this study from date -30 through date +30, where date zero is the date of the first public announcement of the merger. The empirical results in this study can be summarized as follows. First, the return rates of KOSDAQ registered firms with M&A appears higher than that of KSE listed firms. This means that public announcement of M&A is more influential on stock price for KOSDAQ registered firms than KSE listed firms. Second, The difference between actual merging price and fair value is significant in KSE listed firms and KOSDAQ registered firms. This means that the investors take M&A of KOSDAQ registered firms as a good news. Third, the impact on the market prices of merging firms take place after the first public announcement of the merger in KSE registered firms. But the impact on the market prices take place not only merging firms but also merged firms in KOSDAQ registered firms. • The research looks into the impact of stock split announcements on stock prices and market efficiency in the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE). This research uses a sample of 26 stock split announcements that occurred between 2020 and June 2021. According to the Global Industry Classification Standards, the stock split announcements covered in the study pertain to 26 businesses and 9 industries (GICS). To obtain the results, the usual event research methodology is used. The findings demonstrate significant average abnormal returns of 15.01 percent on the day the stock split news is made public and abnormal returns of 4.11 percent and -4.05 percent one day before and after the stock split announcement date, respectively. The study's findings revealed significant positive abnormal returns one day before the disclosure date, indicating information leakage, and significant negative abnormal returns the next day after the announcement date, indicating CSE informational efficiency. Because stock prices adapt so quickly to public information, these findings support the semi-strong form efficient market hypothesis, which states that investors cannot gain an abnormal return by trading in stocks on the day of the stock split announcement.

  • This paper investigates whether the announcement effect of seasoned equity offering is affected by management performance. We used Korean stock market data from 2000 to 2007 to analyze the possible relation between net income and seasoned equity offerings announcement effect. The sample of 308 firms are selected for the study from the original population of 750 seasoned equity offering announcements. and We analysis this article through event studty of Brown and J.Warner. We divide the data into two groups. - the previous offerings year's positive net income group and negative income group. Both positive and negative net income samples affect stock price positively. However, the CAR for the negative net income offerings becomes zero around 25days after the announcement date. To analyze the impact of accounting income on the seasoned equity offering announcement effects fully, we introduce a cross-sectional regression analysis by setting the cumulative abnormal returns as a dependant variable and net income as an explanatory variable. The beta coefficient of the net income shows a statistical significance. These results can be considered as an evidence to support our hypothesis.

  • Construction Standard Unit Price is the unit price calculated based on the market price for work items in construction projects that have already been conducted. It is used as basic data for calculating the budget price of public construction projects. In the Construction Standard Unit Price Book implemented in the second half of 2020, there are 1,810 types of unit prices. Since 2017, 100-150 construction standard unit prices have been revised semiannually (on January 1 and July 1 of each year) through Construction Site Surveys. Other work items have been set based on the rate of inflation during the corresponding period. Later in 2020, this procedure was changed, with on-site survey period extended to one year to strengthen the construction standard unit price investigation. The revisions previous announced during the second half of the year were changed only to reflect the price inflation rates. With such changes in the revisions to construction standard unit prices, one important issue that was raised: The timing of announcing the revisions during the second half of the year (reflecting the price inflation rates). The market unit wage, which is the unit price standard of labor cost that takes up a large part of the construction cost, is announced in January and September. The figures announced in September is reflected on the construction standard unit price four months later in January, but the market unit wage announced in January is reflected only six months after in July, which causes a timing issue. As such, the current study analyzed problems rising from the changed timing of the announcements of the construction standard unit price during the second half of the year, in addition to analyzing their impact on public construction projects.

The impact of the pandemic is analyzed based on different pandemic phases and the corresponding government pandemic interventions to curb the disease. This study analyzes 6 pandemic event dates, covering the time period from January 2020 to February 2021. A total of 20 state-owned enterprises are included as the sample of this study. Test of difference is employed to compare the stock prices of the state-owned enterprises before and after each pandemic event date. In general, this study confirms the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the stock prices, especially the event in 2020, although some variations do exist. The results of the study reveal a significant decrease in the stock prices of the state-owned enterprises after the announcement of the first confirmed COVID-19 cases, the announcement of COVID-19 as a global pandemic, the imposing of Large Scale Social Restriction (PSBB I and PSBB II). In contrast, the stock prices increase after the imposing of a new normal policy and the imposing of Public Activity Restriction (PPKM). This study also documents that the effect of the pandemic may vary based on the pandemic phase.

  • This paper investigates the stock price and the volume behavior on the ex-dividend day using the December fiscal year firms listed on the Korea Stock Exchange from 1998 to 2000. Using the samples of voluntarily preannounced dividend-raying firms prior to the end of fiscal you, this study corrects the major limitations on previous studies -Kim, S. (1997) and Kim, S. (2003)- which were based on the perfect foresight assumption for firms' upcoming dividends. Also, this paper examines the information content of dividend more properly, since the preannounced date for the upcoming dividend payment is employed for the first time as the event date. Empirical results show that the announcement effects of cash and/or stock dividend is significant around the event date. The ex-dividend day stock returns are negative as expected for the samples of voluntarily preannounced cash dividend-paying firms.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to re-examine the disclosure effect of stock splits and long-term performance after stock splits using stock split data over the past 10 years, and infer the motivation (signal or opportunism) of stock splits. In addition, we focus on exploring the determinants of the short- and long-term market response to stock splits. Design/methodology/approach - We measure the short-term market response to a stock split and the long-term stock performance after the stock split announcement using the event study method. We analyze whether there is a difference in the long-term and short-term market response to a stock split according to various company characteristics through univariate analysis and regression analysis. Findings - In the case of the entire sample, a statistically significant positive excess return is observed on the stock split announcement date, and the excess return during the 24-month holding period after the stock split do not show a difference from zero. In particular, the difference between short-term and long-term returns on stock splits is larger in companies with a large stock split ratio, small companies, large growth potential, and companies with a combination of financial events after a stock split. Research implications or Originality - The results of this study suggest that at least the signal hypothesis for a stock split does not hold in the Korean stock market. On the other hand, it suggests that there is a possibility that a stock split can be abused by the manager's opportunistic motive, and that this opportunism can be discriminated depending on the size of the stock split, corporate characteristics, and financing plan.
