Purpose : This study was performed to comparison of distance change of subacromial space according to shoulder abduction angle in loaded and unloaded conditions. Methods : The subjects were 20 male college students, and the subacromial space was measured using an ultrasound diagnostic apparatus. The participants shoulder abduction was measured during each shoulder resting position and 45 ° abduction with loads of 1 kg, 2 kg, 3 kg. The collected data were analyzed by a paired t-test and repeated measure ANOVA with the SPSS (Ver. 22) program. Results : The subacromial space showed statistically significant decreased in 45 ° abduction than resting position (p<.001). All the subacromial space increased during the according to loads (1 kg, 2 kg, 3 kg) at the resting position but at 45 ° abduction showed statistically significant decreased as the load increases (p<.05). Also, subacromial space showed significant changes in the 2kg, 3kg compared with the 0kg loads. Conclusion : These results identified that shoulder abduction angle and load were related to subacromial space. When resting position, subacromial space is larger at loads than unload. As the load and shoulder abduction angle increase, subacromial space is reduced compared to resting.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of neck exercises on neck-shoulder posture and pain of high school students with neck disorders. Methods: Twenty seven subjects were randomly assigned to one of 3 groups a craniocervical flexion training group (CCFT), a neck strengthening exercise group (ST), and a basic stretching exercise group (CG). CCFT and ST exercised five times a week for eight weeks under the researcher's guidance. The control group performed basic stretching exercises. Diagnostic radiologic equipment was used for the measurement of neck-shoulder posture. Neck disability index, and numeric rating scales were used. Results: The CCFT showed a significant pre-post treatment difference on measures of neck flexion angle and forward shoulder angle changes compared to the ST and CG groups (p<0.05). The CCFT group also showed a significantly greater improvement on the neck disability index and numeric rating scales changes than the ST and CG groups (p<0.01). Conclusion: Because CCFT decreases neck flexion angle, forward shoulder angle, neck disability index, and pain in the forward head posture, it is useful for treating patients with neck disorders.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of abdominal breathing and thoracic expansion exercises on craniovertebral and cranial rotation angles in patients with rotator cuff injury. METHODS: This study enrolled 19 patients with rotator cuff injury, and ten and nine of the patients were randomly placed in abdominal breathing and thoracic expansion exercise groups, respectively. After pain treatment in each group, breathing exercise was conducted thrice a week for four weeks. The patients were recorded by using a digital camera and Image J (version 1.46, National Institutes of Health, USA), an angle measurement program, was used to analyze changes in the craniovertebral angle, cranial rotation angle, and sagittal shoulder posture. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences in the craniovertebral angle were found in both the abdominal breathing and thoracic expansion exercise groups (p<.05). A significant difference in cranial rotation angle was found in the thoracic expansion exercise group only (p<.05). No statistically significant differences in sagittal shoulder posture were found in both groups (p>.05). CONCLUSION: Although abdominal breathing and thoracic expansion exercises did not effectively change sagittal shoulder posture, the exercises were effective in improving craniovertebral and cranial rotation angles. Therefore, abdominal breathing and thoracic expansion exercises are suggested as effective exercise programs for forward head posture.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of finish line design, amount of incisal reduction, and loading condition on the stress distribution in anterior all-ceramic crowns. Three-dimensional finite element models of an incisor all-ceramic crown with 3 different finish line designs : 1) shoulder with sharp line angle 2) shoulder with rounded line angle 3) chamfer : and 2 different incisal reductions : 2mm and 4mm were developed. 300 N force with the direction of 45 degree to the long axis of the tooth was applied at 3 different positions : A) incisal 1/3, B) incisal edge, C) cervical 1/5. Stresses developed in ceramic and cement were analyzed using three-dimensional finite element method. The results were as follows : 1. Stresses were concentrated in the margin region, which were primarily compressive in the labial and tensile in the lingual. 2. Stresses were larger in the area near line angle than on the crown surface of the margin region. In case of shoulder with sharp line angle, stresses were highly concentrated in the porcelain near line angle. 3. At the interface between porcelain and cement and at the porcelain above the margin on crown surface, stresses were the highest in chamfer, and decreased in shoulder with sharp line angle and shoulder with rounded line angle, respectively. 4. At the interface between cement and abutment on crown surface, stresses were the highest in shoulder with sharp line angle, and decreased in shoulder with rounded line angle and chamfer, respectively. 5. The amount of incisal reduction had little influence on the stress distribution in all-ceramic crowns. 6. When load was applied at the incisal edge, higher stresses were developed in the margin region and the incisal edge than under the other loading conditions. 7. When load was applied at the cervical 1/5, stresses were very low as a whole.
Background: Although visual examination and palpation are used to assess shoulder motion in clinical practice, there is no consensus on shoulder motion under dynamic and static conditions. This study aimed to compare shoulder joint motion under dynamic and static conditions. Methods: The dominant arm of 14 healthy adult males was investigated. Electromagnetic sensors attached to the scapular, thorax, and humerus were used to measure three-dimensional shoulder joint motion under dynamic and static elevation conditions and compare scapular upward rotation and glenohumeral joint elevation in different elevation planes and angles. Results: At 120° of elevation in the scapular and coronal planes, the scapular upward rotation angle was higher in the static condition and the glenohumeral joint elevation angle was higher in the dynamic condition (P<0.05). In scapular plane and coronal plane elevation 90°-120°, the angular change in scapular upward rotation was higher in the static condition and the angular change in scapulohumeral joint elevation was higher in the dynamic condition (P<0.05). No differences were found in shoulder joint motion in the sagittal plane elevation between the dynamic and static conditions. No interaction effects were found between elevation condition and elevation angle in all elevation planes. Conclusions: Differences in shoulder joint motion should be noted when assessing shoulder joint motion in different dynamic and static conditions.
This paper presents an optimization method to determine the shoulder height of an angular contact ball bearing by 3D contact analysis using nondimensional-shaped variables. The load analysis of the ball bearing is performed to calculate the internal load distributions and contact angles of each rolling element. From the results of bearing load analysis and the contact geometry between the ball and inner/outer raceway, 3D contact analyses using influence function are conducted. The nondimensional shoulder height and nondimensional load are defined to give the generalized results. The relationship between the shoulder height and radius of curvature of the shoulder under various loading conditions is investigated in order to propose a design method for the two design parameters. Using nondimensional parameters, the critical shoulder heights are optimized with loads, contact angles, and conformity ratios. We also develop contour maps of the critical shoulder height as functions of internal loads and contact angles for the different contact angles using nondimensional parameters. The results show that the dimensionless shoulder height increased as the contact angle and dimensionless load increased. Conversely, when the conformity ratio increased, the critical shoulder height decreased. Therefore, if the contact angle is reduced and the conformity ratio is increased within the allowable range, it will be an efficient design to reduce the shoulder height of ball bearings.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to provide a better understanding of short turn mechanism by describing short turns after kinematic analysis and provide skiers and winter sports instructors with data through which they are able to analyze right postures for turns in skiing in a systematic, rational and scientific manner. Method: For this, a mean difference of kinematic variables (ski-hip angle, ski-shoulder twist angle, pole checking angle, the center of gravity (CG) displacement, trunk forward lean angle) was verified against a total of 12 skiers (skilled and unskilled, 6 persons each), regarding motions from the up-start to down-end points for short turns. Results: There was no difference in a ski-hip twist angle. The ski-shoulder twist angle was large at the up-start point while a pole-checking angle was high at the down-end point in skilled skiers. Concerning the horizontal displacement of CG, skilled skiers were positioned on the right side at the upstart point. No significant difference was observed in the trunk forward lean angle. Conclusion: According to the ski-shoulder twist angle and CG horizontal displacement results, the upper body should be kept leant toward the pole. In addition, big turns should be made via edging and angulation. During pole checking, the hand holding the pole should be thrown and released toward a vector direction of the forearm.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the muscle activity ratio according to the shoulder abduction angle by identifying the mean muscle activities and calculating the muscle ratios for use in developing strengthening methods. Methods: The participants were healthy adults in their 20s (n=19). The activity of the deltoid middle, upper trapezius, middle trapezius, and lower trapezius muscles was measured by 8-channel surface electromyography. Muscle activity was measured during 4 conditions of angle of shoulder abduction: $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, and $120^{\circ}$. The data used in the analysis were the root mean square and % total muscle activity values. Results: The root mean square values for the deltoid middle, upper trapezius, middle trapezius, and lower trapezius muscles showed significant differences. No significant differences were detected in the % total muscle activity of the deltoid middle, upper trapezius, middle trapezius, or lower trapezius muscles. Conclusion: Future studies aimed at developing selective shoulder abductor muscle strengthening methods are likely to provide more effective results by using muscle activity ratios.
The objective of this study is to compare the general body measurements and shoulder shapes of Korean and American elderly women to supply basic data for the apparel design. The anthropometrics data was collected including both direct and indirect measurements of 283 women over the age of 55 in Korean and the American women. The statistical methods used for the analysis of measurement data are the T-test, Exploratory data analysis, ANOVA and Duncan-test respectively. The results of the T-test indicated that there is a significant difference in the 14 body measurement items except of waist circumference. The results of exploratory data analysis, an independent relationship between shoulder slope angle and forward shoulder roll of Korean women. On the other hand, there is a dependent relationship that the bigger shoulder slope and forward shoulder roll with wide cross back shoulder of American women. Comparison of mean among the three different age groups, aged 55~59 group shows significant differences in the value of difference between cross back shoulders and horizontal shoulder width. This finding indicates that the wide and forward roll shoulder needs to special pattern making like ease amount and curvature for fit and comfort for women's apparel.
