Development of Hydrocarbon Oil Detection Sensor using the Swelling Property of Silicone Rubber (기름에 대한 실리콘의 부피 변화 성질을 이용한 유출유 탐지 센서 개발)

  • In this research, the oil detection method and the characteristic of sensor using the selective reaction of silicone rubber in response to hydrocarbon oil will be described. As a sensing principle, the swelling property of silicone rubber in response to hydrocarbon fuel is used, also a strain gauge is used to transduce the volume change to an electrical signal. The sensor core is manufactured with a strain gauge embedded in silicone rubber by the curing process and experiments for characteristics of sensor core with various oils were carried out. It is shown that the sensor core can be used as an oil spill detection sensor. Also, for the application to the sea area, a buoy type sensor platform is integrated with a sensor core and a strain amplifier and it is tested in the simulated oil spill condition. In this study, it is proven that the integrated sensor can be used for the detection of various oils.

Microcomputer Based Vacuum Drying System and its Application to the Vacuum Drying of Green Red Pepper (마이크로컴퓨터 감압건조(減壓乾燥)시스템의 제작운영(製作運營)과 풋고추의 감압건조특성(減壓乾燥特性))

  • In Girder to measure the pressure and weight decrease of drying sample during the vacuum drying process of food, sensing devices were designed and constructed with strain gauge. Microcomputer based vacuum drying system was made up of these devices interfaced to apple II microcomputer. The electrical output signal from vacuum sensor which constituted with Bourdon tube whereon strain gauge attached were digitalized and input to microcomputer through the MC 6821 interface I.C. chip. The relationship between read-out digital value (D) from microcomputer and readings of vacuum gauge (P, mmHg) was P=-146.136+3.620D'(r=0.9994) The pressure control of vacuum dryer was successfully conducted in the range of $400{\sim}600\;mmHg$ accuracy. The digitalized load cell output (D) could be correlated with the real weight (W, g) as W=-14,000+0.585D (r=0.9998) Drying curves of green red pepper under $64^{\circ}C$, $400{\sim}600\;mmHg$ was similar to those of red pepper and differently affected by the degree of vacuum pressure but was varied according to their shape (cut or whole). Moisture movement of green red pepper during the vacuum drying process was fitted to Page model. The empirical equations obtained were $M-M_e/M_o-M_e={\exp}\;(-0.0673{\theta}^{1.177})$ and $M-M_e/M_o-M_e={\exp}\;(-0.0655\;{\theta}^{1.477})$ for whole and cut green red pepper, respectively.

Field measurement of local ice pressures on the ARAON in the Beaufort Sea

  • This study conducted four field measurements of local ice pressure during the icebreaking voyage of the icebreaking research vessel "ARAON" in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas from July to August of 2010. For measurements, 14 strain gauges, including 8 strain gauge rosettes, were set on the bow of the port side. Influence coefficients were determined using a finite element model of the instrumented area and they were used to convert the measured strains on the hull structure to local ice pressures. The converted maximum pressure was calculated as 2.12 MPa on an area of $0.28m^2$. Pressure-area curves were developed from the surveyed pressure data and the results were compared with previously measured data. The study results are expected to provide an understanding of local ice pressures and thus be useful in the structural design of ice class ships.

  • The measurement of thr high-temperature strains is one of the challenging subjects in mechanical engineering. For the precise measurement, proper high-temperature strain gauge, cement and skilled technique are needed. In this paper, a high-temperature strain measurement is performed for the perfectly flat CRT. As this CRT is structurally very weak, cracking of the panel frequently occurs during the heat cycle in the furnace. From the measured strain variations of the panel with tension shadow mask, the crack behavior can be explained.

  • In this paper, a wireless measurement system has been developed which can measure the deformation of a tire in real time by utilizing strain gauge sensors and Zigbee wireless communication. A strain gauge sensor is mounted inside the tire and then the strain on the tire is obtained using the DSP module. The acquired sensor values are transmitted into the vehicle by radio communication. The wireless receiver module installed inside the vehicle can monitor the deformation of the tire in real time. The deformation of the tire can be used for measuring the load applied to each tire or the speed of the tire. The load or speed applied to the tires are essential parameters for the stable control of autonomous vehicles.

  • This paper is to optimize single-element piezoresistor shear stress strain gauge related to aspect ratio of rectangular diaphragm. The shear stress distribution on diaphragm has been simulated by finite-element method(FEM). As simulation results, the maximum sensitivity for strain gauge was appeared at the center of diaphragm with aspect ratio 3, and in along to long edge with the ratio 2. The diaphragm with ratio 2 is not acceptable due to the yield of mask alignment in IC process technology. The optimum condition of diaphragm with respect to good sensitivity was realized in the case of ratio 3. In this case, the area by gauge was 8% of overall size of rectangular diaphragm.

  • There are many kinds of seam trackers in the industrial welding field. We are proposed the contact seam tracking sensor applying strain gauges kind of contact sensor that mostly used in welding part now. For this seam tracking experiment, we made the strain gauges sensor by ourselves and tested how well the sensor tracks the seam. The experiment device consist of strain gauges sensor, amplifier circuit of strain gauges signal, saw wave generator, MOSFET power diving circuit and X-Y slide by moved DC motor. The tracking areas are X-Y planes(left, right, up and down) and the change of strain gauge resistance causes to move DC motor that connected to X-Y slide. As a result of experiment, we confirmed that the strain gauges sensor tracks a seam well, and X-Y slide DC motor was controlled by PWM control.

Study on the Deformation of Die and Product in Closed Die Upsetting (밀폐 업셋팅에서 금형과 제품 변형에 관한 연구)

  • The study has been performed for the relation between die and product in closed die upsetting by the experiment. The strain of die has been given by the simple experiment using the strain gauge located at the outer surface of die and the deformation history of die and product has been given by the experiment and Lame's formula. The inner pressure of die causes the deformation of die that affects the accuracy of dimension and shape of product. The product with accurate dimension and shape can be obtained by analysing elastic deformation of die during upsetting process. The deformation of die during metal forming process has been usually predicted by the experience of industrial engineers or finite element analysis. But it is difficult to predict the dimension of product at unloading and ejected states. The study has given useful result for the deformation history of die and product through the experiment and Lame's formula at closed die upsetting, and can be applied in the die design for product with accurate dimension.
