A Status and Associated Factors of Mental Health on Girls' High School Students (여고생의 정신건강 실태와 관련요인)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe the status and associated factors of mental health on girls' high school students. Methods: The participants were 446 academic girls' high school students and 240 vocational girls' high school students of the 1st graders in Busan. The data were collected from April 28, 2009 to May 30, 2009. Survey was developed in the form of self-report five-point likert scale(1-5) using Lees Instrument of mental health(1986) that revised from Derogatis et al's Symptom Check List-90(1976). The higher score of this scale means worse status of mental health. Result: The score of mental health of subjects was low and the mean was $1.69{\pm}.50.$ The depression mean was the highest among mental health sub-variables. The mental health of the vocational girls' high school students was worse than the academics. As for subjects in mental health by their various characteristics, there are significant by school type(p<0.001), economic status(p<0.001), father's job(p<0.001), parent's marrital status(p<0.001), cognitive health status(p<0.001), record(p<0.05), character(p<0.001), satisfaction of life(p<0.001), needs for help on mental health(p<0.001). Conclusion: The intervention program needs to improve mental health of vocational high school girls' students as well as academic high school girls' students, and need to establish depression relieving nursing intervention program for girls' high school students.

An Integrative Review on Mental Health-related Quality of Life for the Mental Health Management of Workers (근로자의 정신건강관리를 위한 정신건강 관련 삶의 질에 대한 통합적 고찰)

  • Purpose: Despite the importance of mental health-related quality of life among workers, its comprehensive understanding is lacking. This study aimed to identify influencing factors regarding mental health-related quality of life through a comprehensive literature review. Methods: The integrative review method of Whittemore and Knaf was used. Data search was conducted on papers published before September 2020, and RISS, NDSL, and KISS were used for the search. Results: Fourteen studies were selected for analysis. Five factors affecting the mental health-related quality of life of workers were found. Mental and physical health status, job stress, working environment, health behaviors, and other personal and socio-economic characteristics were significant influencing factors. Conclusion: Findings from the review suggest the necessity of developing a customized intervention program to improve the mental health-related quality of life of workers.

  • This study attempted to develop fundamental data of nursing intervention for Women's health improvement through literature review related to women's health. Women's health problems are focused in nursing because the quality of women's health influences on public health directly and indirectly. Especially women experience more stressors and mental disorders than men. This paper reviewed rationale of mental problems to understand Women's mental problems through various research paper analysis. As a result, it was found that women's mental problems as well as the health were affected by various factors and were connected with social, cultural elements closely. This result means that women are affected by social, economical, psychological states from gender unequality in this society. So to solve the women's mental problems, women have to be considered as human beings, women, mothers with multiple roles. And like Hwabyung, one of the women's mental problems related to Korean traditional culture, nursing needs to be done to solve the problem through cultural approach. To do this, nursing has to research negative effect as well as positive effect on women's mental health by modern culture which includes "Han" and traditional family culture. The multidisplinary, interdisplinary communication is important to develop nursing intervention and nursing must build a pertinent Korean women's mental health research system to improve a sociopolitical environment.

Resilience and Mental Health among Migrant Workers in Busan, Korea (이주노동자의 레질리언스와 정신건강)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between resilience of migrant workers and their mental health for improving their quality of life and adaptation in Korean society. Methods: Data were collected from March 21 to May 7, 2011. The participants included 488 migrant workers who lived in Busan Metropolitan City or Gyoungnam province. Results: First, heavy working burdens and lack of rests, low wages, poor living environments, low economic status & deficiency of living necessities, hard physical labors, and conflicts with Korean workers had negative effects on mental health. Second, high perceived stress caused by usual 'living difficulties', high 'cutural shock', high feeling of 'social isolation', and high discomfort from 'lack of Korean language proficiency' gave negative effects on migrant worker's mental health. Third, the most important factor on the mental health was the 'cultural shock' among stressors. Even though many stressors existed among migrant workers, these negative effects on mental health were lessened by their high resilience level. Conclusions: This study highlights the importance of migrant workers in Busan, Korea. To improve their mental health, social support including financial supports and educational programs that foster resilience needed.

A Study on Relationships among University Students' Self-differentiation, Self-esteem and Mental Health : Focused on Depression and Anxiety (대학생의 자아분화, 자아존중감과 정신건강간의 관계 - 우울, 불안을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine relationships among university students' self-differentiation, self-esteem and mental health. The subjects were 400 students of four universities in Busan and Gyungnam area. A questionnaire survey was done. The results of this study are as follows : First, the levels of university students' self-differentiation and self-esteem were high. Second, university students' self-differentiation and self-esteem were correlated positively. Third, the levels of university students' depression and anxiety were relatively low. It showed that the subjects' mental health of this study were not bad. Fourth, depression had no significant difference by gender. However, female students had higher anxiety than male students had. Fifth, university students' self-differentiation and self-esteem had negative correlation with depression and anxiety, and self-esteem played a role of mediating variable between self-differentiation and mental health. Sixth, family projection, family regression and self integration of self-differentiation had indirect influence upon the students' mental health through self-esteem, while cognitive-emotional function had direct influence upon mental health and had indirect influence upon mental health through self-esteem as well. In this study, university students' self-differentiation and self-esteem were found to be important variables having influence upon mental health, and self-differentiation had indirect influence upon mental health through self-esteem. Counselling intervention strategies should be established considering self-differentiation and self-esteem of the students who complained about their maladjusted emotion and human relation problems at schools. Also, programs enhancing self-differentiation and self-esteem of university students should be developed and the execution of these programs will be needed to help the university students who experienced mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and so on.

The impact of mental health on shoulder arthroplasty and rotator cuff repair: a meta-analysis

  • Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of mental health attributes, such as the presence of psychiatric comorbidities or psychological comorbidities (low resilience), on outcomes after rotator cuff repair (RCR) and total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). Methods: PubMed, Cochrane, and Google Scholar (results pages 1-20) were searched up to November 2023. Mental health problems of interest included the presence of psychiatric comorbidities (depression, anxiety) or indicators of poor psychological functioning, such as low resilience or the presence of distress. Patients were assigned to poor or good mental health groups in this study based on their grouping in the original study. Results: Fourteen studies were included in the meta-analysis. Patients with good mental health had greater improvements in postoperative American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and Simple Shoulder Test scores in the TSA cohort (P=0.003 and P=0.01), RCR cohort (P<0.001), and the combined TSA and RCR cohort (P<0.001). No difference was found in visual analog scale score, satisfaction, external rotation, or flexion between the two mental health groups. Patients with poor mental health undergoing RCR experienced higher rates of adverse events and transfusions (P<0.001). Patients with poor mental health also had greater rates of revision and emergency department visits in the TSA cohort (P<0.001), RCR cohort (P=0.05 and P=0.03), and combined cohort (P<0.001). Patients with poor mental health undergoing TSA had a higher rate of re-admission (P<0.001). Conclusions: Patients with poor preoperative mental health showed inferior patient-reported outcome scores and increased rates of adverse events, revisions, and re-admissions. The Effectiveness of Mental Health Problems Screening and Treatment Linkage in Children & Adolescents : Community Based Study Focused on ADHD and Depression (소아 청소년 정신건강 선별검사 및 치료 연계 효율성에 대한 연구 : 지역사회 중심 연구)

  • Objectives : This study evaluated the effectiveness of school-based mental health screening and treatment linkage programs, focusing on attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and adolescent depression. Methods : All 11,158 children and adolescents aged 8-14 years in Seoul received a school-based mental health screening, consisting of the Korean versions of the ADHD rating scale and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), for ADHD, and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-DS) and the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire-Junior (SIQ-JR), for depression. The high-risk children's and adolescents' diagnoses were confirmed using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children-IV (DISC-IV). Treatment linkage programs were managed by the Seoul Metropolitan Community Mental Health Center (Program 1), the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (Program 2), or the Dongjak District Office of Education (Program 3). We estimated and compared the referral rates of the three programs. Results : Program 1 screened and referred 22.9% of ADHD youths to mental health services, Program 2, 68.8%, and Program 3, 40.0%. Program 1 screened and referred 22.8% of depressed youths to mental health services, Program 2, 53.8%, and Program 3, 88.9%. Key elements for successful screening and referral programs were an effective school/community mental health center/Office of Education network, the parents' financial support and perception of their child's mental health status as being problematic, and the teachers' active engagement. Conclusion : This is the first study investigating the effectiveness of school-based mental health screenings' linkage to treatment for primary and middle school students in Korea. An effective network for community mental health and improvements in parents' and teachers' perceptions regarding mental health are needed for more successful treatment linkage.

A Study on Mental Health, Resilience and Happiness of Intermarried Korean Men (다문화가족 남편의 정신건강, 레질리언스와 행복에 대한 연구)

  • The purposes of this study were to uncover the relationships and correlations between mental health, resilience and happiness. The sample consisted of 184 intermarried Korean men. The data were analyzed by means of frequency, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS. The major findings were as follows; Mental health was negatively correlated with resilience and happiness, except for the component of negative emotion. Additionally, resilience was positively correlated with feelings of happiness and positive emotion. Second, social maladaptation and depression had a negative influence on resilience and a negative influence on happiness. Resilience had a mediating effect on mental health and feelings of happiness. Resilience had a mediating effect on mental health and positive emotion, while resilience had a mediating effect on mental health and negative emotion. In conclusion, in order to improve happiness it is important to mediate on intermarried Korean men's resilience through special education programs and counseling.

Factors Influencing Mental Health Literacy - the Analysis of Mental Health Literacy Survey 2021 (정신건강 지식에 영향을 미치는 요인 분석)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors that influencing mental health literacy. Methods : We obtained data on 2016 general population from the Korean Mental Health Literacy Survey (2021) conducted by Ministry of Health and Welfare. Multiple regression analysis was used to evaluate the associations between sociodemographic characteristics and the score of questionnaire items in Korean Mental Health Literacy Survey. Results : Among the factors, female (p<0.001), higher age (p=0.005), higher income level (p<0.001) were significantly correlated with higher score of questionnaire items. Awareness of mental health center & community addiction management center (p=0.002), awareness of mental health hotline service (p<0.001) were also significantly associated with higher response score. Conclusions : The factors affecting mental health literacy could be considered when providing community mental health services.

The Effects of Working Conditions and Job Satisfaction on the Mental Health and Presenteeism of Early Childhood Teachers (영유아 교사의 근무여건 및 직업만족도가 정신건강과 프리젠티즘에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the mental health and presenteeism of early childhood teachers and to explore the effects of working conditions and job satisfaction on these. Methods: Data from the 4thKorean Work Environment Survey were used. The sample consisted of 474 female early-childhood teachers from private facilities. Mental health was measured using the WHO-Wellbeing Index. Presenteeism was attributed to a participant upon indication that, during the past 12 months, she had ever attended work, despite being sick. The data by complex sample design were analyzed through the Rao-Scott $x^2$ test and logistic regression analysis. Results: 37.9% of early childhood teachers reported poor mental health and 34.2% had experienced presenteeism. Early childhood teachers in permanent employment, who did not work evening shifts, and with sustainable jobs, were more likely to have better mental health. Moreover, those in permanent employment and remunerated appropriately were less likely to experience presenteeism. Conclusion: Type of employment, number of days working in the evening, and job sustainability affect mental health. Further, type of employment, number of workers, and being well paid have an effect on presenteeism. We suggest that improved working conditions should precede the improvement of early-childhood teachers' mental health.
