  • An atmospheric plasma pre-treatment method was applied to polyurethane foam (density: 0.27) and rubber (butadiene rubber) to improve its contact angle and adhesion using atmospheric plate type reactor. In order to investigate the optimum reaction condition of plasma treatment, type of treatment gas (nitrogen, argon, oxygen, air), rate of gas flow ($30{\sim}100\;mL/min$), and treated time ($0{\sim}30\;s$) were examined in a plate plasma reactor. The result of the surface modification with respect to the treatment procedure was characterized by using SEM and ATR-FTIR. Due to a decrease of the contact angle of various materials, the greatest adhesion strength was achieved at optimum condition such as flow rate of 100 mL/min, reaction time of polyurethane foam 10 s and rubber 3 s for an atmosphere nitrogen gas. Consequently, the atmospheric plasma treatment reduced the wettability of the polyurethane foam and rubber also resulted in the improvement of the adhesion.

  • The aim of this study was to elucidate chemical structures and rheological properties of arabinogalactans (AGs) isolated from three legumes including black gram (BG), great northern bean (GNB), and California small white bean (CSWB). The ratio of galactose to arabinose (G/A) in three legumes increased in the order of BG > GNB > CSWB. The rheological measurements of 1-5% (w/v) AG solutions revealed Newtonian and non-Newtonian flow behaviors. BG exhibited yield stress, indicating plastic behavior. Small-amplitude oscillatory tests indicated viscoelastic properties of BG, GNB, and CSWB ranging from solid-like, paste-like, and liquid-like behaviors, respectively. Small-strain oscillatory tests were conducted to assess the structure recovery of the AGs after pre-shearing. G" values of BG and GNB increased, but those of CSWB remained constant after shearing. These results suggest that the chemical structures of the AGs, particularly their G/A ratios, influence their rheological properties.

  • Recently, the observation of the electrocatalytic behavior of individual nanoparticles (NPs) by electrochemical amplification method has been reported. For example, the Iridium oxide ($IrO_x$) NP collision on the Pt UME was observed via electrocatalytic water oxidation. However, the bare Pt UME had poor reproducibility for the observation of NP collision signal and required an inconvenient surface pre-treatment for the usage. In this manuscript, we has been investigated other metal electrode such as Cu UME for the reproducible data analysis and convenient use. The $IrO_x$ NP collision was successively observed on the bare Cu UME and the reproducibility in collision frequency was improved comparing with previous case using the $NaBH_4$ pre-treated Pt UME. Also, the adhesion coefficient between NP and the Cu UME was studied for better understanding of the single NP collision system.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of low temperature thermal pre-treatment on biodegradation of waste activated sludge for anaerobic digestion as a countermeasure for increasing sludge generation. The experimental condition was accomplished in 2 %, 4 %, and 6 % TS concentration, and $70^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$, $90^{\circ}C$ of temperature for a maximum of 120 minutes retention time. Then, it was followed by analysis of physical/chemical properties, BMP test and composition of biogas. The biogas characteristic was evaluated by applying the modified Gomperz model. As a result, solubility of dissolved substrate, such as $SCOD_{Cr}$, soluble carbohydrate, and soluble protein, and biogas production increased as temperature increased. Solubilization efficiency at $90^{\circ}C$ was 18.4 %, 17.03 % and 16.88% in 2 %, 4 %, and 6 % TS concentration respectively. Also, solubilization rates of carbohydrate and protein similarly increased. BMP test results also showed that methane production in excess sludge increased to 0.194, 0.187 and $0.182m^3/kg$ VS. respectively, and lag phase decreased to 0.145, 0.220, 0.351 day due to acceleration of the hydrolysis step. Consequently, low-temperature thermal pre-treatment could increase biodegradability of sludge, positively affecting biogas production and sludge reduction.

  • The minimum concentrations of organic solvents inducing phytotoxicity were investigated after spraying or flooding solvent solutions to annual plants. In the foliar treatment of upland test, solvents with high-boiling point or low-polarity induced severe phytotoxicity. Especially, aromatic solvents induced severe phytotoxicity. The most sensitive plant to phytotoxicity was soybean. In the pre-emergence treatment of upland test, the solvents with high-boiling point only induced phytotoxicity at high concentration. The degree of phytotoxicity induced by foliar spray in the condition of paddy field was similiar to that of upland test, but in the pre-emergence test, the former was more severe than the latter. Among 6 treatments, phytotoxicity induced by solvents was most severe in the pre-emergence test under the condition of flooding paddy field. Generally, alcohols induced severe phytotoxicity, especially, ethanol at 0.001%.

  • Thermal oxidation has significant potential for use in synthesizing metal-oxide nanostructures from metallic materials. However, this method has limited applicability to the synthesis of multi-morphology NiO from Ni foil. Techniques consisting of mechanical and chemical approaches were used to pre-treat the Ni foil (prior to oxidation) to promote the formation of nanowires and nanoplates on the NiO layer. These morphologies were realized on the Ni foils scratched by sand paper and a knife, respectively, and subsequently heat-treated at $500^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. Small nanowires (diameter: <10 nm) formed on the Ni foil treated by absolute $HNO_3$ and then oxidized at $500^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. The formation of various morphologies (on the pre-treated Ni foil), which differ from that formed in the case of pristine Ni foil after oxidation, may be attributed to the surface melting phenomenon that occurs during the nucleation process.

  • An atmospheric plasma pre-treatment method was applied to EVA foam, Leather (Action), Rubber and Unwoven to improve its contact angle and adhesion using atmospheric plate type reactor. In order to investigate the optimum reaction condition of plasma treatment, type of reaction gas (nitrogen), rate of gas flow (30~100 mL/min), and reaction time (0~30 sec) were examined in a plate plasma reactor. The result of the surface modification with respect to the treatment procedure was characterized by using SEM. Due to a decrease of the contact angle of various materials, the greatest adhesion strength was achieved at optimum condition such as flow rate of 100 mL/min, reaction time of 10 second for an atmosphere nitrogen gas. Consequently, the atmospheric plasma treatment reduced the contact angle of the EVA foam, Leather (Action) and Rubber also resulted in the improvement of the adhesion.

  • To establish the pre-freezing treatment and to secure microbial safety of blueberry, Korean raspberry, and mulberry, the effects of chemical sanitizers on the populations of microorganisms in the berries were examined. Among the treatments, the combined treatment of 50 ppm aqueous chlorine dioxide and 0.1% fumaric acid reduced most the populations of total aerobic bacteria in the blueberry, Korean raspberry, and mulberry by 2.56, 2.26, and 2.56 log CFU/g, respectively, compared to the control. The populations of yeast and mold in the blueberry, Korean raspberry, and mulberry by the combined treatment were also reduced by 2.24, 2.08, and 1.49 log CFU/g, respectively. These results suggest that the combined treatment can be useful for reducing the microbial contamination and maintaining the quality of frozen berries.

  • Biomass-derived tar and waxy compounds have a highly negative effect on the separation and purification of paclitaxel and should be removed prior to final purification. Adsorbent treatment is a simple, efficient method for removal of tar and waxy compounds from plant cell cultures. In this study, we optimized the important process parameters (adsorption temperature, time, solvent type and adsorbent amount) of adsorbent treatment with Sylopute to remove the tar and waxy compounds in a pre-purification step. The optimal adsorption temperature, adsorption time, solvent type, and crude extract/Sylopute ratio were $30^{\circ}C$, 15 min, methylene chloride, and 1:1(w/w), respectively. This result could be confirmed by HPLC analysis of the absorbent after treatment and TGA of the organic substances that were bound to the adsorbent. In adsorbent treatment step, the purity seemed to show a small improvement but this treatment had a significant effect on convenience and feasibility of following steps by the removal of tar and waxy compounds.
