  • The preparation of $TiO_2$ fine particles from $TiCl_4$ and oxygen by the vapor-phasereaction was investigated at $850^{\circ}C$ with an emphasis on the effect of its experimental conditions on the crystal type of the products. Anatase $TiO_2$ particles prepared by experiment were used to study anatase-rutile transition by calcination temperature, the additives and gas atmosphere. The results were as follows. The kinetics of anatase-rutile transition was well agreed with A vrami equation, and the activation energy of transition was 35kcal/mol. The addition of CuO in anatase $TiO_2$ particles accelerated the anatase-rutile transition, and its transition was retarded in vaccum.

  • [ $TiO_2-Nb_2O_5$ ] sol was prepared using sol-gel method. Crystalline properties of gel powder changed from rutile phase to anatase phase with increasing $Nb_2O_5$ additives at $800^{\circ}C$, while they retained rutile phase regardless of $Nb_2O_5$ additives at $900^{\circ}C,\;1,000^{\circ}C$. They retained amorphous phase from $50^{\circ}C\;to\;400^{\circ}C$, retained anatase phase from $500^{\circ}C\;to\;600^{\circ}C$ and had rutile phase over $700^{\circ}C$ at 1mole% $Nb_2O_5$ additive. After $TiO_2-Nb_2O_5$ sol retained low viscosity with normal chain structure for a long time, its viscosity increased fast with network structure. DTA properties of gel powder had endothermic reaction due to evaporation of propanol and water about $78^{\circ}C$, had exothermic reaction due to propanol combustion about $290^{\circ}C$ and had exothermic reaction due to changing of $TiO_2$ phase about $640^{\circ}C$.

  • $TiO_2$ nanopowder has been synthesized by means of the flame method using a precursor of titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP, Ti$(OC_3H_7)_4)$. In order to clarify the effect of cooling rate of hot flame on the formation of $TiO_2$ crystalline phases, the flame was controlled by varying the mixing ratio and the flow rate of gases. Anatase phase was predominantly synthesized under the condition having the steep cooling gradient in flame, while a slow cooling gradient enabled to form almost rutile $TiO_2$ nanopowder of above 95%.

  • We developed a mass production method that simultaneously controls the phase transformation and crystal size of $TiO_2$ coatings on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Initially, MWCNTs were successfully coated with amorphous 15-20-nm-thick $TiO_2$ by an in-situ sol-gel method. As the calcination temperature increased in both air and argon atmospheres, the amorphous $TiO_2$ was gradually transformed into the fully anatase phase at approximately $600^{\circ}C$, a mixture of the anatase and rutile phases at approximately $700^{\circ}C$, and the fully rutile phase above approximately $800^{\circ}C$. The crystal size increased with increasing calcination temperature. Moreover, above $600^{\circ}C$, the size of crystals formed in air was approximately twice that of crystals formed in argon. The reason is thought to be that MWCNTs, which continuously supported the stresses associated with the reconstructive phase transformation, disappeared owing to complete oxidation in air at these high temperatures.

  • In order to obtain the nano size $10wt%Cu-TiO_2$composite powders by mechanical alloying method for useful composite catalysis, the effects of mechanical alloying time on the formationof $10wt%Cu-TiO_2$ composite powders were analyzed. The phase transformation behaviors were experimented as the heat treating temperature increased. Homogeneous 10wt% Cu-rutile type $TiO_2$composite powders were synthesized in 40 hours by mechanical alloying. After 60 hours mechanical alloying 50 nm size $TiO_2$powders were obtained. Both the phase of mechanically alloyed 10 wt% $Cu-TiO_2$ and pure $TiO_2$ powders were not transformed to anatase after annealing at the temperature range between 350 to 500 $^{\circ}C$. The intermetallic compound of $Cu_2Ti_4$O was formed after 10 hours mechanical alloying, however it could be considered that this intemetallic phase dose not prevent the transformation of rutile $TiO_2$ to the anatase phase after heat treatment at the temperature between 350 and $550^{\circ}C$.

  • The objectives of this experiment performed were to determine the potential using of solar radiation to destroy organic contaminants in water by photolysis and to develop the process and improve its performance. We used lab, scale of recirculation photoreactor with 30, 50, 80ppm initial concentration of TCE and Ti $O_2$ anatase, respectively. Adsorption constant, reaction constant were obtained and compared using the Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics equation. Ti $O_2$ anatase demonstrated the highest conversion ratio co TCE among Ti $O_2$ anatase, ZnO and F $e_2$ $O_3$ in this experiment. It was shown that in case of two component system, TCE+ phenol, as the concentration of phenol increased in the feed solution, TCE decomposition rate decreased.

  • High pressure has been applied to check the pressure effect on the powdered $TiO_2$-complex, which was synthesized for ultra-violet rays cutoff and antimicrobial applications. $TiO_2$-complex consists of anatase, rutile and silver chloride. Grain size was determined to be ~34 nm. Both anatase and rutile begin structural phase transitions to $ZrO_2$ (baddeleyite)-type crystal structures at 14~16 GPa, then sustain their phases up to 22.7 GPa. Under decompression to 0.0001 GPa (ambient pressure), rutile transforms to another phase with ${\alpha}-PbO_2$ structure, while anatase retains its high pressure structure upon complete decompression. Silver chloride peaks disappear at the low pressures.

  • Anatase particles of titanium dioxide were prepared from $TiCl_4$ aqueous solution by using an electro-dialysis [ED] process. For the preparation of an aqueous solution of $TiCl_4$ precipitates, $TiCl_4$ liquid frozen in ice was transferred to a neck flask and then hydrolyzed using deionized [DI] $H_2O$. During the hydrolysis of the $TiCl_4$ solution at $0^{\circ}C$, a slurry solution of $TiOCl_2$ was obtained and the color changed from red to orange. The ED process was applied for the removal of chlorine content in the slurry solution. Two kinds of hydrolyzed slurry solution with lower [$Ti^{4+}$] and higher [$Ti^{4+}$] were sampled and the ED process was applied for the samples according to the removal time of [$Cl^-$]. With de-chlorination, the solution status changed from sol to gel and the color quickly changed to blue. Finally, white crystalline powders were formed and the phase was confirmed by XRD to be anatase crystallites. The morphology of the hydrous titania particles in the solution was observed by FE-SEM. The hydrous titania particles were nano-crystalline, and easily coagulated with drying.

  • $TiO_2$films of rutile and anatase phase have been prepared on silica glass substrates by the sol-gel method using $Ti(i-OC_3H_7)_4$. The effect of additives on the polymorph of $TiO_2$film has been examined in view of degree of crystallization. Third-order nonlinear optical properties of the both film have been investigated by the third harmonic generation method. The measured 3rd order nonlinear optical susceptibility of rutile and anatase thin films were about $1.4{\times}10^{-12}$ and $9.7{\times}10^{-13}$ esu, respectively.

  • We developed a novel synthesis strategy of titania nanowire arrays by employing simple hydrothermal reaction and ion-exchange reaction techniques. Hydrothermal reactions of metallic titanium powder with $H_2O_2$ in a 10 M NaOH solution produced a new sodium titanate compound, $Na_2Ti_6O_{13}{\cdot}xH_2O$ (x~4.2), as arrays of nanowires of lengths up to 1 mm. Acid-treatment followed by calcination of this material produced arrays of highly crystalline anatase nanowires as evidenced by x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy studies. In both cases of sodium titanate and anatase, the nanowires have exceptionally large aspect ratios of 10,000 or higher, and they form arrays over a large area of $1.5 {\times} 3 cm^2$. Observations on the reaction products with varied conditions indicate that the array formation requires simultaneously controlled formation and crystal growth rates of the $Na_2Ti_6O_{13}{\cdot}xH_2O$ phase.
