Roll drafting operation causes variations in the linear density of bundles because the bundle flow cannot be controlled completely by roll pairs. Defects occurring in this operation bring about many problems successively in the next processes. In this paper, we attempt to analyze the draft dynamics and the linear density irregularity based on the governing equation of a bundle motion that has been suggested in our previous studies. For analyzing the dynamic characteristics of the roll drafting operation, it is indispensable to investigate a transient state in time domain before the bundle flux reaches a steady state. However, since governing equations of bundle flow consisting of continuity and motion equations turn out to be nonlinear, and coupled between variables, the solutions for a transient state cannot be obtained by an analytical method. Therefore, we use the Finite Difference Method(FDM), particularly, the FTBS(Forward-Time Backward-Space) difference method. Then, the total equations system yields to an algebraic equations system and is solved under given initial and boundary conditions in an iterative fashion. From the simulation results, we confirm that state variables show different behavior in the transient state; e.g., the velocity distribution in the flow field changes more quickly the linear density distribution. During a transient flow in a drafting zone, the output irregularity is influenced differently by the disturbances, e.g., the variation in input bundle thickness, the drafting speed, and the draft ratio.
Matrix diffusion from planar fractures was studied mathematically and through physical model experiments. Mathematical models were developed to simulate diffusion from 2D and 3D instantaneous disk sources and a 3D continuous disk source. The models were based on analytical solutions previously developed by Carslaw and Jaeger (1959). The mathematical simulations indicated that the 2D scenario produces significantly different results from the 3D scenario, the time for mass disappearance is significantly larger for continuous sources than for instantaneous sources, the normalized concentration generally decreased over time for instantaneous sources while it increased over time for continuous sources, diffusion rates decrease significantly over time and space, and the normalized mass loss from the source zone never reaches 1 for continuous sources due to the semi-infinite integral. The simulations also showed that disappearance times increase exponentially with increasing source radii and matrix porosity, and decrease with increasing aqueous-phase NAPL solubilities.
The objective of this study is to develop an accurate and robust two-dimensional finite element method for turbulence simulation in open channels. The model is based on Streamline Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin finite element method and Boussinesq's eddy viscosity theory. The method developed in the study is depth-averaged mixing length model which assumes anisotropic and local equilibrium state of turbulence. The model calibration and validation were performed by comparing with analytical solutions and observed data. Several numerical simulations were carried out, which examined the performance of the turbulence model for the purpose of sensitivity analysis. The uniform channels that appear horizontal flow and vertical flow were carried out. The model was also applied to the Han river was in for the applicability test. The results were compared with the observed data. The suggested model displayed reasonable flow distribution compare to the observed data in natural river flow. As a result of this study, the two-dimensional finite element model provides a reliable results for flow distribution based on the turbulence simulation in open channels.
An equation is developed to estimate potential groundwater resources available for development. This equation is useful for preliminary planning stages prior to detailed design stages. The equation is a function of major factors such as aquifer characteristics, saltwater intrusion length, coastal groundwater discharge and potential locations of pumping wells. Thus, most important factors are taken into account. The equations are derived using well-known analytical solutions. Thus, the basis is scientifically sound. Use of the equation is quite simple since it is an explicit function of variables. A logical method is proposed to assess a radius of influence of a pumping well considering aquifer characteristics and the pumping rate. Applications to a hypothetical problem and comparison with results from a more rigorous numerical simulation model indicate that results obtained from the proposed equation are conservative.

With an aim at eliminating the numerical dispersion error arising from the numerical simulation of stress wave propagation, numerical dispersion characteristics of the wave equation based one-dimensional finite element model are analyzed and some dispersion control scheme are proposed in this paper The dispersion analyses are carried out for two types of mass matrix, namely the consistent and the lumped mass matrices. Based on the finding of the analyses, dispersion correction techniques are developed for both the implicit and explicit schemes. For the implicit scheme, either the weighting factor for the spatial derivatives of each time level or the lumping coefficient for mass matrix is adjusted to minimize the numerical dispersion. In the case of the explicit scheme an artificial dispersion term is introduced in the governing equation. The validity of the dispersion correction techniques proposed in this study is demonstrated by comparing the numerical solutions obtained using the Present techniques with the analytical ones.
Automated sensing of soil macronutrients would allow more efficient mapping of soil nutrient spatial variability for variable-rate nutrient management. The capabilities of ion-selective electrodes for sensing macronutrients in soil extracts can be affected by the presence of other ions in the soil itself as well as by high concentrations of ions in soil extractants. Adoption of automated, on-the-go sensing of soil nutrients would be enhanced if a single extracting solution could be used for the concurrent extraction of multiple soil macronutrients. This paper reports on the ability of the Kelowna extractant to extract macronutrients (N, P, and K) from US Corn Belt soils and whether previously developed PVC-based nitrate and potassium ion-selective electrodes could determine the nitrate and potassium concentrations in soil extracts obtained using the Kelowna extractant. The extraction efficiencies of nitrate-N and phosphorus obtained with the Kelowna solution for seven US Corn Belt soils were comparable to those obtained with IM KCI and Mehlich III solutions when measured with automated ion and ICP analyzers, respectively. However, the potassium levels extracted with the Kelowna extractant were, on average, 42% less than those obtained with the Mehlich III solution. Nevertheless, it was expected that Kelowna could extract proportional amounts of potassium ion due to a strong linear relationship ($r^2$ = 0.96). Use of the PVC-based nitrate and potassium ion-selective electrodes proved to be feasible in measuring nitrate-N and potassium ions in Kelowna - soil extracts with almost 1 : 1 relationships and high coefficients of determination ($r^2$ > 0.9) between the levels of nitrate-N and potassium obtained with the ion-selective electrodes and standard analytical instruments.
Following a Mediterranean fruit fly outbreak in South Australia, a bait spray program involving the pesticides like malathion(MAL) was carried out. During the application, dermal exposure was considered for the pest controllers wearing PVC gloves. However there is a lack of information about PVC glove performance like break through times and permeation rates with MAL, therefore, a new analytical method for HPLC-UV was developed. A standard permeation test cell was used in this study. From the results of this study, more than 96% solubility of MAL was provided at 30% isopropyl alcohol in distilled water as a collecting media. However, there was significant decomposition of MAL when the solutions were kept at over $50^{\circ}C$ for 2-3 hours. As a mobile phase, 50% acetonitrile water solution (pH 6.0) gave the greater sensitivity compared with other compositions of acetonitrile solution. The arm section of the gloves had shorter breakthrough times and higher permeation rates compared with the palm. There was no malathion solution breakthrough up to 24 hours using the 1% MAL working strength solution. When the temperature was changed from $22{\pm}1^{\circ}C\;to\;37{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, the breakthrough times were decreased by 14.5% on palm and 37.5% on arm, and permeation rates were increased significantly. The findings of this study indicate that further investigations on used gloves, periods of use and varying working conditions like tasks and seasons should be carried out to assess potential worst case scenarios.

Until now, several empirical models for assessing the damage due to TNT explosions have been proposed. A set of analytical solutions for the time-dependent radius of an expanding fire-ball after detonation of TNT was obtained by solving the continuity, Euler (momentum), and energy equations with a "polytrope" assumption at the fire-ball center. The shock waves developed from the rapid expansion of a fire-ball under water were obtained by using the KirkwoodBBethe hypothesis. The calculated period of bubble oscillation and the maximum radius of the bubble resulting from the fire-ball due to a violent underwater TNT explosion were in good agreement with the experimental data.

The concentration of veterinary antibiotics in aqueous and sediment matrices was measured in agricultural irrigation ditches bordering several animal-feeding operations (AFOs) and then compared to its concentration in the watershed. Analytical determination in aqueous samples was based on solid phase extraction (SPE) and appropriate buffer solutions were used to extract residuals in sediment samples. Separation and detection of extracted veterinary antibiotics were performed with high performance liquid chromatograph tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS/MS). In general, higher concentrations of antibiotic were observed in the aqueous phase of irrigation ditches, with the highest concentration of erythromycin hydrochloride (ETM-$H_2O$) of $0.53{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, than in aqueous watershed samples. In contrast, higher concentrations were measured in river sediment than in irrigation ditch sediment with the highest concentration of oxytetracycline of $110.9{\mu}g\;kg^{-1}$. There was a high calculated correlation ( > 0.95) between precipitation and measured concentration in aqueous samples from the irrigation ditches for five of the ten targeted veterinary antibiotics, indicating that surface runoff could be an important transport mechanism of veterinary antibiotics from field to environment. Further, environmental loading calculation based on measured concentrations in aqueous samples and flow information clearly showed that irrigation ditches were 18 times greater than river. This result suggests the likelihood that veterinary antibiotics can be transported via irrigation ditches to the watershed. The transport via surface runoff and likely environmental loading via irrigation ditches examined in this study helps identify the pathway of veterinary antibiotics residuals in the environment.

The performance of wave control by a surface-mounted horizontal membrane is analyzed in the frame of linear potential theory. To employ the eigenfunction expansion method, the fluid domain is divided into two regions i.e. region without membrane and membrane-covered region. By matching the each solutions at boundaries of adjacent regions, the complete solution is obtained. The present analytical method solving the scattering problem directly gives the same results as Cho and Kim(1998)'s method solving the diffraction and the radiation problem separately. To verify the developed model, the model test with a surface-mounted horizontal membrane is conducted at the wave tank(36m${\times}$0.91m${\times}$l.22m). The analytic results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The reflection and transmission coefficients are investigated according to the change of membrane tension, length and incident frequencies.
