This study aims to identify the elements of black culture and use it to analyze the formative characteristics of casual fashion items as well as the symbolic meanings presented in the graphic designs of the items. First of all, in order to distinguish the identity of black culture, this study made a division into racial, social, and artistic aspects based on cultural specificities of Stuart Hall, a culture theorist. This was for a theoretical review and based on this review, a theoretical framework was developed to analyze the characteristics of American casual fashion design of black people. The case study selected 1719 fashion images of 137 male brands and 33 female brands from websites of companies manufacturing casual wear of black people in America. The following is a summary of the study results. The conceptual characteristics based on specificities of black culture can be categorized into ten attributes: playfulness in order to digest human grief and emotion positively, satire of the mainstream society, spontaneity through emotional expression from the heart, abstractness of various emotions elating suffering, humor trying to express negative aspects as the meaning of light and innocent laughter, dependence with passive attitudes toward discrimination and master-slave relationships in history, resistance against discrimination and disadvantages, African orientation and primitiveness pursuing natural conditions, aggressiveness against violence and unfair treatment, and confidence and defiance against social deprivation and corruption. Based on the results of an analysis through formative classification system founded on racial, social, and artistic aspects of black people, specificities of black culture are of formative characteristics of their casual fashion design. These elements are presented on graphic t-shirts through strong colors, loose silhouette, and details with many pockets. These characteristics were reflected in symbolic meanings presented in the graphic.

Appreciating gardens in garden show has its meaning in appreciating concepts and ideas of artists, hidden inside of garden, as formative arts, as well as the beauty of the nature. This study is aimed to understand the intension of artists in visual expression through formative media in the gardens by assessing structure of visual narrative in the space with 20 artworks among the ones presented in 2018 Taehwagang Garden Show. The formative structure is delivered as contents and forms through formative media and formative language. Thus, for analysis on the artworks, the researcher assessed expressive characteristics of the media, through visual and space language, that forms the formative structure in the contest of narrative structure expressed in the gardens and findings of the analysis are as follows. First, for intertextuality obtained through media image, most of the artworks delivered message through 'figure image.' This means, the concept is delivered as 'affinity of actual objects' through the media and associated 'meaning and meaning action' are expected. Second, the characteristics of signs to show symbolism in the gardens were categorized into 'icon'. 'index' and 'symbol'. The results showed that most of the artworks expressed common characteristics between image and meaning, using 'icon' and 'symbol'. Third, as space formation components, based on formative principles, the components of 'dominant' and 'subordinate' roles were defined as the key components for meaning delivery. Also, it was understood that 'space configuration with overlapped image' and 'space configuration with transparency' were adopted to strengthen conceptional layers. Forth, for space occupation types, there were mostly central hall type, corridor type and passage space type and for open space type, the entire space area was conceptualized, instead of certain object. The circulation line was defined in the frequency order of circular type, pass type and return type. The study on the expressive characteristics of visual narrative in garden design is meaningful as it could build base data for the method of spatial design for visual development of concepts in the future.

Lucie Rie as an individual ceramist in terms of contemporary meaning was influenced by early 20th century's academic education and the ideology of modern formative arts. Modernity in her ceramic works has had a dramatic exert on numerous potters. Also, she is highly required to be studied in the history of modern pottery as a potter who took the initiative of studio pottery by the individual artistic handicraft. This paper considered an analysis of characteristics and techniques of 20C Modernistic ceramist Lucie Rie's works and activities. The body of this research investigated classification by chronicles and stylistic characteristics of her activity in the background of early 20th century European Modernism which influenced her formative arts. The purpose of this study is to analyze affordance of façade design by extracting analysis elements of affordance in façade design domestic five-star hotels. The subjects of this study were 88 domestic five-star hotels; we selected literature review and case study as methodology. The analysis elements included mass forms, exterior colors, window frame patterns, exterior characteristics, and door types based on the visual perception factors of façade design from the concept of affordance. The results of the study were as follows. First, the mass forms were divided into stackable, integral, and connection types, and stackable type was most frequent. Second, exterior colors were divided into achromatic, red, yellow, and opaque color parts, and the achromatic parts were most frequent. Third, the window frame patterns were divided into grid, irregular, full, horizontal, and vertical windows, and grid windows were most frequent. Fourth, the exterior characteristics were divided into formative mass, horizontal partition, design contrast, tiled roof, and facility connection, and the formative mass was most frequent. Fifth, the door types were divided into porch, piloti, and wall type, and porch was most frequent. The results of this study showed that the façade design elements such as mass forms, exterior colors, window frame patterns, exterior characteristics, and door types intentionally contained affordance.

This study attempted to comprehend the usage of the modular system in fields through literature review and objective research, as well as analysis of its expression characteristics in fashion. It tried to provide inspiring visual data for the fashion design of the modular system. After analyzing architecture and product-related books, Internet data and advanced research, the four expression characteristics of the modular system were obtained. Firstly, the formative expression characteristics of the modular system in fashion were simplicity, extensibility, variability and diversity. Secondly, of the formative expression characteristics expressed in modern fashion, simplicity (30%) was the highest, followed by extensibility (27%), diversity (22%) and variability (21%). Thirdly, simple silhouette and structure were used to express simplicity, usually simple geometric figures. In contrast, extensibility was expressed through the expansion and exaggeration of the area, length and volume of the clothes. In terms of variability, the typical characteristics of modules were reflected. For diversity, heterogeneous materials were used, and informality was expressed.

Alexander McQueen is a typical designer of unconventional and experimental design who showed maximalism through outstanding tailoring. The purpose of this research is to study formative characteristics of maximalism that are expressed in modern fashion based on the works of Alexander McQueen, and to suggest boundless possibilities of development through his sense of design and the expressive ability of his works. Theoretical considerations will be made through literature research and precedent studies, and the collection data for case analysis will be used to select ready-to-wear women's collections from 2001 S/S to 2010 F/W by referring to internet sites. The study results are as follows. First, the most representative characteristic of formative characteristics of maximalism expressed in Alexander McQueen's works is expandability. Second, decorations used as a part of detail on clothes is used as decoration itself, and handcraft expression is shown through excessive use of decorations. The expandability of decoration that emphasizes splendid magnificence is expressed through flawless technique. Third, the fusion of each different image and the combination of ethnic image and modern image was most prevalent. Fourth, fantasy expresses a fictive image that could not be seen in reality by expressing an unrealistic and maximized image through the imagination of designer. Fifth, experimental element is expressed as an image that actively reflects the challenging spirit, which suggests a new direction of beauty through shocking and extraordinary images of the inner world of the designer and the root of new ideas about inhumane modern society.

This study aims to examine the formative characteristics of seniors' fashion in overseas social media, and look into the psychological characteristics of seniors by analyzing the emotions and the characteristics of psychological mechanism in seniors' fashion. The study methods include statistical analysis and content analysis for literary study and data analysis. For data analysis, statistical and content analyses were conducted to analyze 992 data collected from Advanced style, Facebook, and Instagram for 4 years from 2013 to 2016. In formative features shown at overseas social media, circle and square silhouette, achromatic color and warm color, showy tone color, soft material, horizontal details, plain and natural patterns, cap and sunglasses production, and sophisticated elegance styles appeared high. The emotional characteristics in senior's fashion had a silhouette that expressed stability, color that expressed passion, love, happiness, joy, hope and comfort. Materials were expressed by the emotions of dependence and attachment, details were expressed by stable, maternal, calm, comfortable and harmonious emotions. Patterns were expressed by the images of beauty, love, fruit and psychological stability. Accessories were expressed by young and characterful images. Style expressed the emotions of trust, pride, longing, intoxication and ecstasy. The characteristics of psychological mechanism used such shapes and patterns as flower, heart and lips to symbolize the emotions of love, humor, and fun. Young and trendy fashion were expressed in compensation for aging. Kitsch and kidult style was expressed by regression. Elegance fashion was expressed by the sublimation of pride, trust and intoxication.

In order to reflect traditional elements in modern design, designers should be able to creatively apply elements of traditional Chinese clothing. To understand this, a deep understanding of and insights into the traditional clothing culture are required. In this study, the characteristics of traditional Chinese women's clothing from the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties of China to the Qing Dynasty were analyzed by dividing them into silhouette, color, pattern, materials, and detail. The characteristics of the silhouette were classified into A, H, X, and O types, of which types A and H were the most common. As for the color characteristics, there are relatively many five cardinal colors, and for the contrast of colors complementary colors were mainly used. As the for pattern characteristics, real patterns, animal patterns, character patterns, geometric patterns, and mixed patterns were used. Four types of materials were mainly used: silk, hemp, cotton, and wool. The detail characteristics were also anlyzed by classifying them into collar, sleeve, neckband, and gusset. Based on the results of this analysis, a satisfaction survey was conducted on the design of modern Chinese women's clothing. The result of satisfaction with design elements showed that the images of vest and suit were most preferred, H and X silhouettes, and yellow and white were the most preferred. Geometric and plant patterns were preferred, as were silk and acetate materials. Based on the result of chi-square analysis of design element preferences according to the characteristics of the subject, there was no difference according to occupation, residential area, or income, and there were differences in silhouette, color, materials, and detail according to age.

The importance of environment has come into focus recently, and this has led to increased attention on zero waste fashion design as a method to minimize waste from the production stage of fashion goods. The purpose of this study was to analyze the development method types and the characteristics of zero waste fashion design in order to study the eco-friendly meanings of zero waste fashion design, as well as its meaning as creative design development methods. Through the case analysis of recent designs, the design types of zero waste fashion design were largely classified into cut and sew, folding, draping, and non-woven types, and they were classified again according to the characteristics of production process. According to the result of analyzing fashion design development methods of zero waste fashion designs based on the process of completing design, they were classified into pattern making, computer programming, draping, assembling of the unit, and non-woven moulding methods, and the aspect of combined use rather than utilization of one method appeared. Formative characteristics of zero waste fashion design included decorative beauty, formative beauty, and transformable beauty and its design characteristics were fortuity and unexpected properties, breaking stereotypes, structural flexibility and futuristic innovation.

This study aims to investigate the socio-cultural background of Poulaines, which influenced fashion and contemporary shoe design. Analyzing the characteristics of the Poulaines provided basic data for different shoes. The study method utilized previous studies to explore the concept and characteristics of Poulaines. In the empirical analysis, shoe design data mainly came from collections that illustrate formative elements of contemporary shoe design from the 2010 S/S season to the 2020 S/S season. A total of 709 photo materials were collected and analyzed. The results showed that the morphological characteristics of Poulaines were exaggerated to symbolize classes of the past and sexual expression. The expanding structure was divided into the fore nose, heel, and top-line and featured a design that expressed the formative beauty of Poulaines. Additionally, the decorative desire to represent wealth and class using various materials introduced new designs into contemporary shoe designs while showing extreme decorativeness through over-trimming and color contrast. Furthermore, the heterogeneous characteristics that come from the change and harmony of the shoes' body and heel that deviated from the existing shoe shapes were classified into the dissolution of shapes and mixing and matching. Thus, they broke the monotonous silhouette of shoes and gave variety delicately.
