  • The interlayers, either softer or stiffer than the surrounding layers, are usually overlooked during field investigation due to the small thickness. They may be neglected through the analysis process for simplicity. However, they may significantly affect the dynamic behavior of the soil-foundation system. In this study, a series of 3D finite-element Direct-solution steady-state harmonic analyses were carried out using ABAQUS/CAE software to investigate the impacts of interlayers on the dynamic response of a cast in place pile group subjected to horizontal harmonic load. The experimental data of a 3×2 pile group testing was used to verify the numerical modeling. The effects of thickness, depth, and shear modulus of the interlayers on the dynamic response of the pile group are investigated. The simulations were conducted on both stiff and soft soils. It was found that the soft interlayers affect the frequency-amplitude curve of the system only in frequencies higher than 70% of the resonant frequency of the base soil. While, the effect of stiff interlayer in soft base soil started at frequency of 35% of the resonant frequency of the base soil. Also, it was observed that a shallow stiff interlayer increased the resonant amplitude by 11%, while a deep one only increased the resonant frequency by 7%. Moreover, a shallow soft interlayer increased the resonant frequency by 20% in soft base soils, whereas, it had an effect as low as 6% on resonant amplitude. Also, the results showed that deep soft interlayers increased the resonant amplitude by 17 to 20% in both soft and stiff base soils due to a reduction in lateral support of the piles. In the cases of deep thick, soft interlayers, the resonant frequency reduced significantly, i.e., 16 to 20%. It was found that the stiff interlayers were most effective on the amplitude and frequency of the pile group.

  • The magnetic field application effect on resistance of a high-$T_c$ superconducting (HTSC) element comprising a flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) was investigated. The YBCO thin film, which was etched into a meander line using a lithography, was used as a current limiting element of the flux-lock type SFCL. To increase the magnetic field applied into HTSC element, the capacitor was connected in series with a solenoid-type magnetic field coil installed in the third winding of the flux-lock type SFCL. There was no magnetic field application effect on the resistance of HTSC element despite the application of larger magnetic field into the HTSC element when a fault happened. The resistance of HTSC element, on the contrary, started to decrease at the point of four periods from a fault instant although the amplitude of the applied magnetic field increased.

  • The operation of KTX in Korea has launched since 2004, which brought about a great change in railroad industry. We have acquired lots of great know-hows, especially in railroad construction and operation field. Therefore, we have been building up numerous operation skills until now. However, it was necessary to investigate some of the equipment based on our own environment because the high speed train system were totally imported. In case of Toughened Glass Stem Insulator, it was totally new type in domestic. This paper introduces estimation method and result in three different field aspect, such as an electrical field, a physical field, and environmental circumstances. First, in case of an electrical field, amplitude and a number of time for switching surge voltage data were collected. Second, in case of a physical field, amplitude and trend of vibration in to the insulator were examined. Finally, in case of environmental circumstances, flying possibility of gravel and ice clod were investigated. Also shrink and expend characteristic according to temperature were reviewed. Through this basic data, suitability for Toughened Glass Stem Insulator using in domestic high speed railway have been accumulated and estimated.

  • When an object or objects, rigid or flexible, presents in incident sound field, the sound wave is scattered. This, we call, is scattered sound field. It, of course, depends on the amplitude and the direction of the incident sound field as well as the geometry and the surface impedance of the scatterer(object). This paper addresses the way to measure scattered sound field by using arbitrary incident sound wave. This means that the method can decompose the scattered field from measured sound field with respect to any magnitudes and directions of incident plane-waves.

  • In this paper, the design parameters for the magnetic field source at extremely low frequency are proposed. This facility can be used for in vivo experiments with small animals to investigate biological response to the driving magnetic fields. In case that the exposed animals are motionless, the animals may be affected by the directivity of driving field. To avoid this effect, a 2-axis ELF magnetic field driving apparatus was designed, The optimum location and number of turns of each coil were obtained by numerical analysis. Applying these data to the MATLAB code (for computation), the magnetic field distribution was obtained. The calculation result for a well-designed facility showed that the space in which the amplitude of the magnetic field lies within the 95% of the magnetic field distribution was more than 60% of each axis length.

  • We simulate the light transmission through an extremely small nanoscale aperture having a 10 nm diameter punctured in a metal film positioned at the center of a plasmonic bull's eye grating. A considerable directive emission of transmitted light with a divergence angle of 5.7 degrees was observed at $10{\mu}m$ from the nanohole opening at the frequency of surface plasmon polariton excitation, an confirmed by measuring the distance dependent transmission amplitude. Observations of the electric field in cross-sectional, near-field, and far-field views near-field enhancement associated with the surface plasmon excitation, and the interference of the electric field light through the nanohole in the near-field region is responsible for such a considerable directive emission.

  • In this paper. We experimentally investigated the magnetic properties of YBCO bulk superconductor using AC magnetization method. The sample is 2.8cm wide in a diameter and 1.4cm long. We applied Ac magnetic field parallel to the direction of length of YBCO bulk. It is observed that YBCO bulk has the diamagnetic properties. AC loss calculation of YBCO bulk superconductor was performed by evaluating the total area of magnetization traces. As depends on the frequency and amplitude of the applied magnetic field.

  • A novel control strategy for the induction motor drive, based on the field acceleration method, is presented. The torque is controlled through variations of the stator flux angular velocity. The stator flux is controlled by using a feed forward control scheme, with the stator flux reference vector adjusted so as to obtain the fixed rotor flux amplitude.

  • A model for reflection and refraction of magneto-thermoelastic SV-waves at the interface of two transversely isotropic and homogeneous solid half spaces under initial stress by applying classical dynamical theory of thermoelasticity is purposed. The reflection and refraction coefficients of SV-waves are obtained with ideal boundary conditions for SV-wave incident on the solid-solid interface. The effects of magnetic field, temperature and initial stress on the amplitude ratios after numerical computations are shown graphically with MATLAB software for the particular model.

  • In the paper, we investigate the magneto-impedance(MI) effect of the Fe-Co-B Amorphous magnetic film, the amorphous magnetic film having near zero magnetostostriction is fabricated by using the sputtering methode, and then annealed in magnetic field. When the external magnetic field is directly applied to the fabricated film, the voltage amplitude between both side of the magnetic film varies about 22% at 10[MHz] and the impedance varies about 21% at 10[Oe]. Thus, we find that the fabricated magnetic film has the characteristics of high-quality sensor element.
