Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (AMX) is a cost-efficient biological nitrogen removal process. The coexistence of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in an AMX reactor is an interesting research topic as a nitrogen-related bacterial consortium. In this study, a sequencing batch reactor for AMX (AMX-SBR) was operated with a conventional activated sludge. The AOB in an AMX bioreactor were identified and quantified using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) and real-time qPCR. A T-RFLP assay based on the ammonia monooxygenase subunit A (amoA) gene sequences showed the presence of Nitrosomonas europaea-like AOB in the AMX-SBR. A phylogenetic tree based on the sequenced amoA gene showed that AOB were affiliated with the Nitrosomonas europaea/mobilis cluster. Throughout the enrichment period, the AOB population was stable with predominant Nitrosomonas europaea-like AOB. Two OTUs of amoA_SBR_JJY_20 (FJ577843) and amoA_SBR_JJY_9 (FJ577849) are similar to the clones from AMX-related environments. Real-time qPCR was used to quantify AOB populations over time. Interestingly, the exponential growth of AOB populations was observed during the substrate inhibition of the AMX bacteria. The specific growth rate of AOB under anaerobic conditions was only 0.111 d-1. The growth property of Nitrosomonas europaea-like AOB may provide fundamental information about the metabolic relationship between the AMX bacteria and AOB.

In this paper, we establish a mode oxidation process for formation of $Ta_2O_5$ insulator film. The voltage drop in the electrolyte is affected not in voltage change but in current change. If the voltage drop in the electrolyte is same with cathode oxidation voltage, the current changes logarithmically in proportion to the voltage drop in interface of Ta2O5/electrolyte. As a result of the measurement on the electrical property of $Ta_2O_5$ insulator film, when the thickness of the insulator film is $1500\AA$, the breakdown voltage is 350volts Ind dielectric constant is 29.
An aerobic submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) treating ammonium wastewater was studied in respect of nitrification characteristics and distribution of nitrification bacteria over a period of 350 days. MBR was fed with ammonium concentration of 500-1000 mg $NH_4-N/L$ at a nitrogen load of $1-2kg\;N/m^3{\cdot}d$. Overall ammonium oxidation rate increased with dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, temperature, and sludge retention time (SRT). Under a higher concentration of free ammonia ($NH_3-N$) due to the decrease of ammonium oxidation rate, the nitrite ratio ($NO_2-N/NO_x-N$) in the effluent increased. The sudden collapse of nitrification efficiency accompanied by sludge foaming and the increase of sludge volume index (SVI) was observed unexpectedly during the operation. At the later stage of operation, additional carbon source was fed to the MBR and resulted in twice higher value of SVI and the decrease of ammonium oxidation rate. In fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis, genus Nitrosomonas which is specifically hybridized with probe NSM156 was initially the dominant ammonia oxidizing bacteria and the amount of Nitrosospira gradually increased. Nitrospira was the dominant nitrite oxidizing bacteria during whole operational period. Significant amount of Nitrobacter was also detected which might due to the high concentration of nitrite maintained in the reactor.

Sidestream in domestic wastewater treatment plants contains high concentration of ammonium, which increases nitrogen loading rate in the mainstream. The process for deammonification consisting of partial nitritation-anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) and heterotrophic denitrification is an economical method of solving this problem. Currently, about 130 full-scale deammonification plants are fully operating around the world, but none is in Korea. In order to transfer the principal information about sidestream deammonification processes to researchers and operators, we summarized basic concepts, processes type, and key influence factors (e.g., concentration of nitrogen compounds, dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature, and pH). This review emphasis on the processes of single-stage sequencing batch reactor (SBR) deammonification, which are widely used as full-scale plants. Since simultaneous processes of partial nitritation, ANAMMOX and heterotrophic denitrification occur in a single reactor, the single-stage SBR deammonification requires appropriate control/monitoring strategies for several operating factors (DO and pH mostly) to achieve efficient and stable operation. In future, AB-process consisting of A-stage (energy harvesting from organics) and B-stage (ammonium removal without organics) will be applied to the wastewater treatment process. Thus, we suggest mainstream deammonification for B-stage connected with the sidestream deammonification as seeding source of ANAMMOX. We expect that many researchers will become more interested in the sidestream deammonification.
Sixty four bacterial colonies which were able to oxidize the manganese were isolated from soil samples in Mokcheon and Ochang area. Among them, one bacterial strain was selected for this study based on its higher manganese oxidation, and this selected bacterial strain was identified as Aeromonas sp. MN44 through physiological-biochemical test and analysis of its 16s rRNA sequence. Aeromonas sp. MN44 was able to utilize lactose but did not utilize various carbohydrates as a sole carbon source. Aeromonas sp. MN44 showed a very sensitive to antibiotics such as kanamycin, chloramphenicol, ampicillin, tetracycline and spectinomycin, and heavy metal such as cadmium. But this strain showed a high resistance up to mg/ml unit to heavy metals such as lithium and manganese. Optimal manganese oxidation condition of Aeromonas sp. MN44 was pH 7.4 and manganese oxidation activity was inhibited by proteinase K and boiling treatment. So, we concluded that this factor was protein. The manganese oxidizing factor produced by Aeromonas sp. MN44 was partial purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation, DEAE-Toyopearl 650M ion exchange chromatography and Sephadex gel filtration chromatography. Its molecular mass was about 113 kDa.
Chemical properties of aerosols were investigated by analyzing the inorganic water-soluble content in $PM_{2.5}$ collected in the downtown area of Jeju City in Jeju Island. Due to an increase in both the number of visiting tourists and the size of local population, the number of cars in this area is increasing, causing an increase in $PM_{2.5}$. Eight $PM_{2.5}$-bound major inorganic ions were analyzed during the summer and winter periods. The water-soluble inorganic component represents a significant fraction of $PM_{2.5}$. In particular, secondary inorganic aerosols contribute 36.2% and 47.5% of $PM_{2.5}$ mass in summer and winter, respectively. Nitrate concentrations increase for $[NH_4{^+}]/[SO_4{^{2-}}]$>1.5, and excess ammonium, which is necessary for ammonium nitrate formation, is linearly correlated with nitrate. These results are clearly observed during the winter because conditions are more conducive to the formation of ammonium nitrate. A significant negative correlation between Nitrogen Oxidation Ratio (NOR) and temperature was observed. The obtained results can be useful for a better understanding of the aerosol dynamics in the downtown area in Jeju City.
As the concentration of nitrogen in the sewage flowing into the sewage treatment plant increases due to urbanization and industrialization, the degree of adverse effects such as eutrophication and toxicity to the aquatic ecosystem is also increasing. In order to treat sewage containing high concentration of nitrogen, various studies on the biological nitrogen removal process are being conducted. Existing biological nitrogen removal processes require significant costs for supplying oxygen and supplementing external carbon sources. In this respect, as a high-level nitrogen removal process with economic improvement is required, an anaerobic ammonium oxidation process (ANAMMOX), which is more efficient and economical than the existing nitrification and denitrification processes, has been proposed. The purpose of this study is to confirm the stability of the ANAMMOX process in the water treatment process and to derive the ratio of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+) to nitrite nitrogen (NO2-) for the implementation of the mainstream ANAMMOX process. A laboratory-scale Mainstream ANAMMOX reactor was operated by applying the ratio calculated based on the substrate ratio suggested in the previous study. In the initial range, the removal efficiency of NH4+ was 58~86%, and the average removal efficiency was 70%. In the advanced range, the removal efficiency of NH4+ was 94~99%, and the average removal efficiency was 95%. As a result of the study, as the NH4+/NO2- ratio increased, the stability of the mainstream ANAMMOX process was secured, and it was confirmed that the NH4+ removal efficiency and the total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency increased. As a result, the results of this study are expected to be used as basic data in the application of the ANAMMOX process in the mainstream.
A simple and rapid spectrophotometric method has been developed to enable the determination of plutonium concentration in an irradiated fuel solution in the presence of all fission products. An excess of ceric ammonium nitrate solution was employed to oxidize all the valence states of plutonium to +6 oxidation state. Interference due to the presence of fission products such as ruthenium and zirconium, and corrosion products such as iron in the envisaged concentration range, as in the irradiated fuel solution, was studied in the determination of plutonium concentration by the direct spectrophotometric method. The stability of plutonium in +6 oxidation state was monitored under experimental conditions as a function of time. Results obtained are reproducible, and this method is applicable to radioactive samples resulting before the solvent extraction process during the reprocessing of fast reactor spent fuel. An analysis of the concentration of plutonium shows a relative standard deviation of <1.2% in standard as well as in simulated conditions. This reflects the fast reactor fuel composition with respect to uranium, plutonium, fission products such as ruthenium and zirconium, and corrosion products such as iron.
ANAMMOX (Anaerobic ammonium oxidation) reactor, which was cultivated ANAMMOX bacteria in mesophilic condition ($35^{\circ}C$), was operated to investigate the effects of temperature. In $20{\sim}30^{\circ}C$ of operation condition, which was assumed as field-temperature, total N removal and $NH_4-N$ removal rate were declined from about 2.50 and $1.27kg\;N/{m^3}_{reactor}-day$ (0.06 and 0.03 kg N/kgVSS/day) to 1.62 and $0.41kg\;N/{m^3}_{reactor}-day$ (0.04 and 0.01 kg N/kgVSS/day), In this range of temperature, ANAMMOX had very low activities but acid fermentation bacteria and denitrifiers, which were competitors of substrates, had high activities relatively. Though operation temperature was higher than inhibition condition for two months, ANAMMOX activities could not been recovered once they were inhibited by low temperature. This fact was resulted from very slow doubling time of ANAMMOX bacteria. This study shows that maintenance device of optimal temperature is necessary required in field application of ANAMMOX.
Thermal decomposition of ammonium metavanadate has been investigated by using the quartz spring balance and differential thermal analysis. It showed that the decomposition of ammonium metavanadate is proceeded at two stages which correspond to $180^{\circ}C-220^{\circ}C$ and $310^{\circ}C-330^{\circ}C$ decomposition temperatures, respectively. Evolved ammonia gas in thermal decomposition has been analyzed quantitatively by titration. And the constituents of gases evolved have been evaluated by gas chromatography and omegatron spectrometer. From these results, it was concluded that the gases evolved in the first step decomposition were $NH_3$ and $H_2O$ with 2:1 ratio and the second step decomposition corresponded to the formation of $NH_3$, $H_2O$ and $N_2O$ which was produced in oxidation of $NH_3$ by $V_2O_5$. The decomposition products were identified by means of X-ray diffraction method. The decomposition product in air was V_2O_5 and the product in vacuum $V_3O_7.$ The kinetics of the thermal decomposition was studied, giving the values of the activation energy of 41.4 kcal/mole and 64.4 (kcal/mole) respectively.
