생물여과 반응기에서 수리학적 체류시간 및 폭기량에 따른 아질산 축적 특성 (Nitrite Accumulation Characteristics According to Hydraulic Retention Time and Aeration Rate in a Biological Aerated Filter)

  • 세라믹 담체가 충진된(공극률 32%) 생물여과 반응기(BAF)를 이용하여 암모니아성 질소폐수를 처리할 때, 수리학적 체류시간(HRT) 및 폭기량의 변화가 아질산 축적에 미치는 영향에 대해서 고찰하였다. 암모니아성 합성 폐수 및 석유화학 실폐수를 $1.6kgNH_4^+-N/m^3{\cdot}d$ 내외의 질소 부하로 BAF에 공급하였을 때, 암모니아성 질소의 제거율은 폭기량 증가에 비례하였으나 아질산 축적률은 폭기량 외에도 HRT의 영향을 받았다. 0.23시간의 HRT에서(공탑 체류시간 기준 0.7시간)는 0.23, 0.45, 0.56 cm/s로 공기 선속도를 증가시키면, 암모니아성 질소 제거율은 각각 73, 90, 92%로 증가하였으나 아질산 축적비($NO_2-N/NO_x-N$)는 0.92, 0.82, 0.48로 점차 감소하였다. 반면에 HRT 0.9시간, 공기 선속도 0.34~0.45 cm/s 범위에서는 암모니아성 질소 제거율 89%, 아질산 축적비 0.13 내외로 아질산 축적률이 급격하게 감소하였다. 공기 선속도 0.34 cm/s, HRT 1.4시간에서는 암모니아성 질소 제거율의 감소로 free ammonia(FA, $NH_3-N$) 농도가 상승하였고, 이후 약 50일에 걸쳐 아질산 축적비는 0.95 이상까지 점차 증가하였다. 본 연구에서는 HRT 0.23시간에서의 FA 농도 및 폭기 조건이 HRT 0.9시간 조건에 비해 아질산 축적에 더 불리했음에도 HRT 0.23시간에서의 아질산 축적률이 더 높게 나타났다. 따라서 FA 농도, 폭기 조건 외에도 HRT, 질소 부하 조건에 따라 BAF에서 아질산 축적량이 영향을 받았다. 반면에 FA 농도가 매우 높게(FA 5~15 mgN/L) 유지되는 조건에서는 운전 조건에 상관없이 아질산 축적이 안정하게 일어났으며 이 경우는 암모니아성 질소 제거율이 감소하였다.

교반식 축분 퇴비화 및 톱밥 탈취처리 시스템의 퇴비화 암모니아 제거 성능 (Performance Characteristics of Agitated Bed Manure Composting and Ammonia Removal from Composting Using Sawdust Biofiltration System)

  • 퇴비화 목적은 축분을 오물감과 악취 없이 살균처리 하고, 토양과 작물에 무해한 유기성 자원의 순환이용이다. 퇴비화 호기성 미생물의 이분해성 유기물 (영양원: 탄질비)분해 적정조건은 수분, 공기, 온도, 퇴비화 기간 등이며, 퇴비화 부숙 목적은 이분해성 유기물분해 및 생육저해 물질분해 등에 있다. 부숙도 판정법은 퇴적물의 온도변화(이분해성유기물분해 검사) 및 발아시험(생육저해물질 검사)등이 바람직하다. 본 연구는 퇴비화 온도, 퇴비화 암모니아가스 농도와 악취물질의 탈취처리, 종자 발아율, 퇴비재료 성분 및 EC 농도 등의 퇴비화 부숙도 주요 요인에 대한 3회 반복 실험성과는 다음과 같다. 본 연구결과로서 퇴비화 주발효 및 후숙 6주간 전반기에서 이분해성 유기물 분해와 취기물질 제거에 관련된 퇴비화 온도, 암모니아 농도, 탄질비 및 염류농도, 후반기 후숙 기간에 작물생육저해물질 제거에 연관된 발아율과 탄산가스 발생량 등을 실측조사 분석한 결과는 다음과 같으며, 안정된 숙성 퇴비의 적정 범위를 유지하여 양질 퇴비 생산이 가능하였다. 1. 축사저류조의 돼지배설물의 고액분리 고형분과 착즙액 정화처리 잉여오니 및 톱밥혼합물의 퇴비화 온도가 $55\sim65^{\circ}C$를 2일 이상 유지하여 병원균과 잡초 종자를 사멸하고, 악취가 미미한 44ppm 이하수준의 비교적 낮은 암모니아농도 및 50% 내외의 저수분의 양질 퇴비 생산이 가능하였다. 2. 퇴비화 실험결과는 퇴비화 온도가 $55\sim65^{\circ}C$로서 1주간 이상, 퇴비재료 수분 50%, 종자 발아율 70% 이상 및 EC농도 5ds/m 이하 등의 수준을 유지하고 있어 완숙퇴비 조건을 구비하고 있었다.상관관계가 비교적 높았으나, 음수량과 분 배설량$(R^2=0.2950)$, 사료 섭취량과 뇨 배설량$(R^2=0.1985)$, 산유량과 뇨 배설량$(R^2=0.2335)$의 상관관계는 낮게 나타났다. 6. 따라서 산유량과 음수량, 산유량과 사료 섭취량의 상관관계식은 $Y=0.1919X_1+11.181(R^2=0.7742),\;Y=0.8568X_2+9.3067(R^2=0.7459)$(Y=milk yield $X_1=water$ consumption, $X_2=feed$ intake)로 추정할 수 있다.. 이상(以上)의 결과(結果)로서 통일(統一)벼가 일반품종(一般品種)에 비(比)하여 저장성(貯藏性)이 우수(優秀)함을 인정(認定)할수 있어 장기저장(長期貯藏)을 위(爲)한 미곡(米穀)으로 활용(活用)할 수 있는 가능성(可能性)을 암시(暗示)하고 있다.록 Lact. plantarum ATCC 8014, Lact. fermenti ATCC 9338균주(菌株)의 산생성(酸生成)을 촉진(促進)하는 경향(傾向)을 보였다.V또는 ara-A의 동시첨가는 GCV또는 ara-A를 단독으로 첨가했을 경우보다 단백질의 합성을 더욱 억제하였다. 이상의 실험결과로 보아 GCV와 ara-A의 동시사용은 HSV-1 혹은 ACV저항 DNA polymerase변이주인 $PAA^r5$에 대해서 상승적인 억제작용을 나타냈으며 이 효과는 virus DNA 합성 억제에 의한 것으로 생각된다. Physiology of Small and Large Intestine of Swine - Review -

  • The small and the large intestine of swine represent the organs that extract nutrients from feedstuffs through digestion and fermentation and that allow their absorption and incorporation into the blood circulation. Special attention is directed towards the small intestine of young pigs since the transition to a solid diet at weaning exerts major impacts on the structural and functional integrity of the small intestine. Dietary factors involved in postweaning changes of gut morphology and biochemistry such as removal of bioactive compounds in sows milk at weaning, anti-nutritional factors in weaner diets, dietary fiber and the role of voluntary feed intake will be elucidated. The microbial function of the large intestine which is carried out by a diverse population of microorganisms is dependent on substrate availability. Short chain fatty acids as main fermentation products contribute to the energy supply of the host but they are also important for the maintenance of the morphological and functional integrity of the epithelium in the colon. As a result of bacterial nitrogen assimilation in the large intestine, nitrogen is shifted from the urinary to the fecal excretion route thus saving metabolic energy to the pig because less ammonia would become available for conversion to urea.

In vitro functional assenssment of bioartificial liver system using immobilized porcine hepatocyte spheroids

  • To treat fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) patients, various extracorporeal bioartificial liver (BAL) systems have been developed. Several requirements should be met for the development of BAL systems: hepatocytes should be cultured in a sufficiently high density; their metabolic functions should be of a sufficiently high level and duration; and the BAL systems module should permit scaling-up and aseptic handling. Several investigators have found that freshly isolated primary hepatocytes can be cultured into three dimensional, tightly packed, freely suspended, multicellular aggregates, or spheroids. These specialized cell structures exhibited enhanced liver specific functions and a prolonged differentiated state compared to cells maintained in a monolayer culture. Cells in spheroids appear to mimic the morphology and ultrastructure of the in vivo liver lobule. The ability of hepatocytes to organize into three-dimensional structures was hypothesized to contribute to their enhanced liver-specific activities. In this study, the ammonia removal rate and urea secretion rate of pig hepatocytes spheroids encapsulated in Ca-alginate bead were determined. A packed-bed bioreactor with encapsulated pig hepatocytes was devised as BAL support system. The efficacy of the system was evaluated in vitro.

Analysis of the Activated Sludge of a Municipal WWTP by Several Bio-Parameters

  • The activated sludge from the aeration basin of the Su-yeong municipal wastewater treatment plant which has operated by a standard activated sludge process in Busan, Korea was investigated during April 2004 and January 2005 with several bio-indicators. The number of bacteria and fungi per gram of dry weight of MLSS were estimated to be $3.1\times10^6\sim1.5\times10^8\;and\;l.1\times10^3\sim1.1\times10^5$ colony forming units, respectively, by the plate agar method. By cultivation-independent methods, such as 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole stain and fluorescence in situ hybridization, the ratio of eubacteria to the entire biomass was evaluated by more than $80\%$ (v/v). The ratio of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria to the total eubacteria was detennined to be $7.0\sim9.8\%\;and\;3.3\sim6.2\%$ without heavy variation in spite of a period of relatively low temperature in the basin. It would be expected that the nitrification would occur or at least co-exist throughout the year in the sludge of many municipal WWTP with influents that contain the sufficient nitrogen sources although the WWTP does not have any specialized processes for the removal of nitrogen.

바나디아 촉매담지 세라믹 캔들필터를 이용한 질소산화물 제거기술 (Removal Technology of NOx Using V2O5/TiO2 Catalyst Impregnated Ceramic Candle Filters)

  • [ $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ ] catalyst impregnated ceramic candle filters are in principle, capable of performing shallow-bed dust filtration plus a catalytic reaction, promoted by a catalytic deposited in their inner structure. Pilot-scale $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalyst impregnated ceramic candle filters were prepared, characterized and tested for their activity towards the SCR reaction. The effect on NO conversion of operating temperature, gas hourly space velocity, amount of deposited catalyst, pressure drops and long-term experiment (life of catalytic filter) was determined. The following effects of $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalyst impregnated ceramic candle filters in SCR reaction are observed: (1) It increases the activity and widens the temperature window for SCR. (2) When the content of $V_2O_5$ catalyst increases further from 3 to 9wt.%, activity of NO increases. (3) NO conversion at first increases with temperature and then decreases at high temperatures (above $400^{\circ} over), possibly due to the occurrence of the ammonia oxidation reaction.

  • Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) has started the nation's first biogas-microturbine project in the city of Gongju as an effort to encourage the utilization of wasted biogas containing useful energy source in the form of $CH_4$. The goal of the project is to set up the biogas microturbine co-generation system for utilizing biogas as an energy source and improving the economics of the wastewater treatment plant. Wastewater treatment processes were investigated in depth to find improvement possibility. Changes in internal recirculation ratio and pre-treatment degree are needed to optimize plant operation and biogas production. Biogas pre-treatment system satisfies Capstone's fuel condition requirement with the test result of 99.9% and 90.2% of hydrogen sulphide and ammonia is removal performance. Installation of microturbine and manufacture of heat exchanger to warm anaerobic digester has been done successfully. Expected economic profit produced by the system is coming from energy saving including electricity 115,871kWh/year and heat contained in exhaust gas 579GJ/year.

Behavior of Hepatocytes Inoculated in Gelatin-Immobilized Polyurethane Foam

  • We have fabricated gelatin-immobilized polyurethane foams (PUFG) by dipping polyurethane foam (PUF) in an aqueous solution containing gelatin and by subsequent reaction with glutaraldehyde after freeze-drying. Gelatin aqueous solutions of different concentrations were used as the dipping solutions to control the amount of immobilized gelatin. The average pore size of PUF decreased with an increase in gelatin concentration. It was found from the hepatocyte adhesion experiment that the amount of hepatocytes seeded on PUFG1, prepared by using a 1% aqueous gelatin solution, was higher than that on other PUFGs. The hepatocytes inoculated in PUFG1, were slightly aggregated as the incubation time increased. The cells inoculated in PUFG1 showed higher ammonia removal ability than those monolayer-cultured on a gelatin-immobilized polystyrene dish (PSG) after 1 and 4 days of incubation time. The inoculated cells exhibited higher albumin secretion relative to monolayer-cultured hepatocytes on PSG. Albumin secretion by hepatocytes seeded on PUFG1 was increased by the presence of serum and was further increased by both the presence of serum and cytokines. The results obtained from a 3-(3,4-dimethylthiazol-2yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay indicated that PUFG can provide a better microenvironment for hepatocyte culture along with nutrition and metabolite transfer through the high porosity of PUF.

Developing a composite vertical flow constructed wetlands for rainwater treatment

  • The worldwide shortage of water resources is a major environmental issue. Using pure water for drinking and domestic purposes is a bigger issue than other environmental issues. Industrialization and Urbanization have even polluted rainwater. In China, when it rains, rainwater is stored on the roof or other sources of storage for daily use resulting in pollution. Several studies have been conducted to treat rainwater. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficiency of constructed wetlands by using ACF as a medium. So, this study aims to treat rainwater in Wuhan city through a Composite Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands. First, rainwater was stored in the tank while it flows out of the roof, further it is processed in constructed wetlands. The constructed wetlands is consisted with plants Calamus and Chives, adding ACF (prepared from luffa) has achieved great results in this study. Results show that the pollutants have been removed to a considerable level, there were significant differences in removal rates under different HRT at 6h, 9h and 12h respectively. Therefore, Composite Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands is recommended for total nitrogen and Ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus.

Effects of Pre-aeration on the Anaerobic Digestion of Sewage Sludge

  • The aim of this study was to assess the effect of pre-aeration on sludge solubilization and the behaviors of nitrogen, dissolved sulfide, sulfate, and siloxane. The results of this study showed that soluble chemical oxygen demand in sewage sludge could be increased through pre-aeration. The pre-aeration process resulted in a higher methane yield compared to the anaerobic condition (blank). The pre-aeration of sewage sludge, therefore, was shown to be an effective method for enhancing the digestibility of the sewage sludge. In addition, this result confirms that the pre-aeration of sewage sludge prior to its anaerobic digestion accelerates the growth of methanogenic bacteria. Removal rates for $NH_3$-N and T-N increased simultaneously during pre-aeration, indicating simultaneous nitrification and denitrification. The siloxane concentration in sewage sludge decreased by 40% after 96 hr of pre-aeration; in contrast, the sulfide concentration in sewage sludge did not change. Therefore, pre-aeration can be employed as an efficient treatment option to achieve higher methane yield and lower siloxane concentration in sewage sludge. In addition, reduction of nitrogen loading by pre-aeration can reduce operating costs to achieve better effluent water quality in wastewater treatment plant and benefit the anaerobic process by minimizing the toxic effect of ammonia.
