  • There are kinds of materials for protective heat shield, i.e.Zn-coated steel, AI-coated steel and aluminum alloy sheets. This study compare formability, corrosion resistance, heat protectability, weight, and cost of these materials for heat protective shield. Generally aluminum alloy sheets are less formable than steel sheets, but A1100 alloy sheet shows almost same press quality of steel parts, using the press dies which producing steel parts. The heat shields using aluminum alloy sheet and steel sheet show almost same heat protectibility. It is the conclusion that Zn-coated merit, and AI-coated steel sheet and aluminum alloy sheet can be used to protect functional corrosion in severely corrosive market area. The material cost of AI-coated steel sheet and aluminum alloy sheet for a mid-size car is almost same, so aluminum alloy sheet is more recommendable in the point of weight reduction of vehicle.

Corrosion of AI-Fe Coatings for Wet-Seal Area in Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells

  • The corrosion behavior of Al-Fe coatings was studied in the wet-seal atmosphere of molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFC). Fe-8Al, Fe-16Al, Fe-25Al, Fe-36Al, and Fe-70Al (in at.%) specimens were tested in Li/K carbonate at $650^{\circ}C$ by a single cell test and an immersion test. In general, the corrosion resistance of the Al-Fe coatings was enhanced due to the formation of a protective $LiAlO_2$ layer. However, when the Al-Fe coatings didn't have sufficient content of aluminum enough for maintaining the protective layer, the corrosion resistance of the Al-Fe coatings was severely degraded by the growth of non-protective scales like $LiAlO_2$. The test results revealed that the aluminum contents in the coatings should be higher than 25 at.% in order to form and maintain the protective $LiAlO_2$ layers.

  • A laboratory experiment was performed to investigate simultaneous removal of phosphorus and nitrogen from raw sewage by intermittently aerated activated sludge process packed with aluminum and silver plate. Two continuous experimental process, i.e. an intermittently aerated activated sludge process, and an intermittently aerated activated sludge process with an aluminum and silver plate packed into the reactor were compared. The pitting corrosion of aluminum does not affect the performance of the biological treatment. The amounts of Al eluted from aluminum plate 17 mg to 60.6 mg in this experimental conditions, and Al/P mole ratio were from 3.31 to 11.25. The total nitrogen removal efficiency in Run E were $60.6\%$ at the HRT of 12 hours. The effluent $PO_4-P$ concentration as low as $1.0\;mg/\iota$ could have been obtained during the continuous experiment in Run E at HRT of 12 hours.

Suppression of Aluminum Corrosion in Lithium Bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide-based Electrolytes by the Addition of Fumed Silica

  • The corrosion property of aluminum by lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt is investigated in liquid and gel electrolytes consisting of ethylene carbonate/propylene carbonate/ethylmethyl carbonate/diethyl carbonate (20:5:55:20, vol %) with vinylene carbonate (2 wt %) and fluoroethylene carbonate (5 wt %) using conductivity measurement, cyclic voltammetry, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. All corrosion behaviors are attenuated remarkably by using three gel electrolytes containing 3 wt % of hydrophilic and hydrophobic fumed silica. The addition of silica particles contributes to the increase in the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte, indicating temporarily formed physical crosslinking among the silica particles to produce a gel state. Cyclic voltammetry also gives lower anodic current responses at higher potentials for repeating cycles, confirming further corrosion attenuation or electrochemical stability. In addition, the degree of corrosion attenuation can be affected mainly by the electrolytic constituents, not by the hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity of silica particles.

산성비 환경을 모사한 수용액에서 염화물 농도에 따른 전기자동차 배터리 하우징용 재료의 전기화학적 특성 연구 (Investigation on Electrochemical Characteristics of Battery Housing Material for Electric Vehicles in Solution Simulating an Acid Rain Environment with Chloride Concentrations)

  • Electrochemical characteristics and damage behavior of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy used as a battery housing material for electric vehicles were investigated in solution simulating the acid rain environment with chloride concentrations. Potentiodynamic polarization test was performed to analyze electrochemical characteristics. Damage behavior was analyzed through Tafel analysis, measurement of damage area, weight loss, and surface observation. Results described that corrosion current density was increased rapidly when chloride concentration excceded 600 PPM, and it was increased about 7.7 times in the case of 1000 PPM compared with 0 PPM. Potentiodynamic polarization experiment revealed that corrosion damage area and mass loss of specimen increased with chloride concentrations. When chloride concentration was further increased, the corrosion damage area extended to the entire surface. To determine damage tendency of pitting corrosion according to chloride concentration, the ratio of damage depth to width was calculated. It was found that the damage tendency decreased with chloride concentrations. Thus, 6061-T6 aluminum alloy damage becomes larger in the width direction than in the depth direction when a small amount of chloride is contained in an acid rain environment.

Feasibility Study on Aluminum Under Laser Ablation for Corrosion Resistance in Molten Salt

  • Fundamental aspects of creating passivation layers for corrosion resistance in nuclear engineering applications, specifically the ability to form complete layers versus porous ones, are being explored in this study. Utilizing a laser ablation technique, 1,064 nm fire at 10 Hz with 60 pulses per shot and 0.5 mm between impact points, aluminum samples are treated in an attempt to create a fully formed passivation layer that will be tested in a LiCl-KCl eutectic salt. By placing these samples into an electrochemical environment mimicking a pyroprocessing system, corrosion rates, resistances and material characteristics are tested for one week and then compared between treated and untreated samples. In initial testing, linear sweep voltammetry indicates corrosion current density for the untreated sample at -0.038 mA·cm-2 and treated samples at -0.024 mA·cm-2 and -0.016 mA·cm-2, respectively. This correlates to a control sample corrosion rate of -0.205 mm·yr-1 and treated rates of -0.130 mm·yr-1 and -0.086 mm·yr-1 for samples 1 and 2. In addition, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy circuits show application of a longer-lasting porous passivation layer on the treated metal, compared to the naturally forming layer. However, the current technique fails to create a uniform protection layer across the sample.

  • It is very important to choose optimal material having good corrosion resistance and capabilities for the part materials such as the automotive exhaust system under a hot salt corrosion atmosphere. Generally, two types of corrosion come into the automotive exhaust system. One is 'Condensate Corrosion', which is occurred by exhaust gas condensate formed at the inner surface of exhaust system heated up during driving, which results in the acid condensate pitting. The other is 'High Temperature Salt Corrosion' occurring from the interaction between the chloride ion coming from salt at the seaside district or snow salt and the outer surface of exhaust system. By the corrosion attack, the main muffler is firstly damaged and the life cycle of an automobile is significantly decreased. It has been investigated that the hot salt corrosion properties of a STS 409L and 436L ferritic stainless steels which are well-known for the materials of the automotive exhaust system. In addition, the corrosion properties of hot dip aluminum coated STS 409L have been compared with uncoated steels. Aluminum coated STS 409L showed a superior corrosion resistance than uncoated STS 409L, and futhermore showed a better corrosion resistance than a STS 436L, which is an expensive ferritic stainless steel having a excellent corrosion resistance caused from more chromium content of an alloying element.

  • The pilot plant experiment was performed to investigate phosphorus and nitrogen removal from domestic wastewater by MLE process combined with aluminum corrosion reactor. When operating 0.5Q and 1Q to internal recycle and sludge recycle in the MLE process, the effluent $COD_{Mn}$ concentration of internal recycle 0.5Q were higher than internal recycle 1Q, the removal efficiency rates of $NH_3$-N in the internal recycle 0.5Q were was higher than internal recycle 1Q. Denitrification rates were about 86.8% in internal recycle and sludge recycle 0.5Q. When operating 0.5Q to internal recycle and sludge recycle in the MLE process, the removal efficiency rates of total nitrogen was the highest. The removal efficiency rates of total phosphorus was about 91.5% in the aluminum corrosion reactor.

알루미늄의 아노다이징과 나노 다이아몬드 분말 봉공처리에 의한 내식성과 내마모성 향상에 관한 연구 (Study on Improvement of Corrosion Resistance and Wear Resistance by Anodizing and Sealing Treatment with Nano-diamond Powder on aluminum)

  • In this study, in order to improve corrosion resistance and wear resistance of aluminum, surface treatment was made by anodizing with oxalic acid solution and sealing with nano-diamond powder. Average size of nano-diamond powder was 30nm. Anodizing with oxalic acid made many pores in the aluminum oxide layer. Pore size and oxide thickness were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Pore size increased as temperature increased and voltage increased. It was possible to make oxide layer with pore diameter more than 50 nm. Oxide thickness increased as temperature and voltage and treatment time increased. Oxide layer with above $10{\mu}m$ thickness was made. Aluminum oxide layer with many pores was sealed by water with nano-diamond powder. Surface morphology was investigated by SEM. After sealing treatment with nano-diamond powder, corrosion resistance, wear resistance and hardness increased.

  • 공기가 제거된 0.5 M HCl 과 0.5 M NaCl 용액에서 일어나는 알루미늄의 부식에 대하여 알라닌(Ala), 히스티딘(His) 과 메티오닌(Met)의 부식억제 효과를 조사하였다. HCl에 용해된 Ala, His, Met의 경우 모두 환원반응 속도가 감소되어 부식이 억제 되었으며, 부식억제 효율은 Met$10^{-4\;}M$ 보다 묽은 용액에서 Langmuir 흡착 등온식이 적용되었으나 $10^{-4\;}M$ 보다 진한 용액에서는 흡착된 분자 사이의 상호작용에 의하여 Temkin의 대수함수 등온식이 적용되었다.
