  • Electric arc furnaces (EAFs) are a main cause of voltage flicker due to the interaction of the high demand currents of the load with the supply system impedance. The stochastic models have described the physical phenomena of EAFs. An alternative approach is to include deterministic chaos in the characterization of the arc currents. In this paper, a chaotic approach to such modeling is described and justified. At the same time, a DLL (Dynamic Link Library) module, which is a FORTRAN interface with TACS (Transient Analysis of Control Systems), is developed to implement the chaotic load model in the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP). The details of the module and the results of tests performed on the module to verify the model and to illustrate its capabilities are presented in this paper.

  • To test for the serial dependence in time series of counts data, Jung and Tremayne (2003) evaluated the size and power of several tests under the class of INARMA models based on binomial thinning operations for Poisson marginal distributions. The overdispersion phenomenon(i.e., a variance greater than the expectation) is common in the real world. Overdispersed count data can be modeled by using alternative thinning operations such as random coefficient thinning, iterated thinning, and quasi-binomial thinning. Such thinning operations can lead to time series models of counts with negative binomial or generalized Poisson marginal distributions. This paper examines whether the test statistics used by Jung and Tremayne (2003) on serial dependence in time series of counts data are affected by overdispersion.

  • This research studies an attrition rate considering terrain feature in a battlefield. Lanchester-type combat models for heterogeneous forces and the Weapon Effectiveness Index are used in this study. The various environments of the battlefield can be explained by the terrain feature. Attrition rates of heterogeneous model are estimated by applying the battle of Baek-Sek mountain during the Korean War. Estimated attrition rates are checked by the paired samples T-Test. Specific cases are shown in this paper as an example. If we study out the relative influence of the terrain feature upon the performance of individual weapons, these will be a possible alternative to analyze the military operations.

  • The Spatial Autoregressive (SAR) models have drawn considerable attention in recent econometrics literature because of their capability to model the spatial spill overs in a feasible way. While considering the Bayesian analysis of these models, one may face the problem of lack of robustness with respect to underlying prior assumptions. The generalized Bayes estimators provide a viable alternative to incorporate prior belief and are more robust with respect to underlying prior assumptions. The present paper considers the SAR model with a set of linear restrictions binding the regression coefficients and derives restricted generalized Bayes estimator for the coefficients vector. The minimaxity of the restricted generalized Bayes estimator has been established. Using a simulation study, it has been demonstrated that the estimator dominates the restricted least squares as well as restricted Stein rule estimators.

  • Microsurgical peripheral nerve repair is a technical and challenging procedure that requires thorough training prior to a real-life operating theater scenario. While the gold standard in training remains training on biological living peripheral nerve specimen, various inanimate models of nerve repair simulation have been described in the past years. The textile elastic band (TEB) obtained from a surgical mask was either covered with a fine silicone sheath or was left bare and was used afterward for end-to-end coaptation. The average diameter of the TEB was 2 mm, similar with the nerves in the distal hand and can be easily crafted out of accessiblematerials such as a surgicalmask and silicone sealant. The silicone that covers the TEB offers more fidelity to the simulation for microsurgical nerve coaptation. The TEB model offers an affordable, available, and easy-to-craft alternative to the existing models for peripheral nerve repair simulation and serves as a good initiation tool before moving on to biological specimens.

  • In this paper, the capabilities of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to describe the viscoelastic properties of acrylonitrile-butadiene styrene (ABS) are investigated. The RNN model was trained using one-dimensional strains and corresponding stress data generated by the finite element method. The optimal model was then employed to predict the viscoelastic behavior of unseen test data. Furthermore, the viscoelastic-based RNN model was tested for extrapolation using other types of strain and corresponding stress data beyond the training set. The agreement between the predicted and actual stresses demonstrates the robust performance of the trained RNN model in predicting different types of strain inputs for larger strain tests, despite being trained only with step strain inputs. Therefore, the use of RNNs can be considered a viable alternative to conventional models for predicting viscoelastic behavior.

  • A simplified rational method is developed to evaluate transverse earthquake-induced forces in continuous bridges. This method models the bridge as a beam on elastic foundation, and assumes a sinusoidal curve for both vibration mode shape and deflected shape in the transverse direction. The principle of minimum total potential is used to calculate the displacements and the earthquake-induced forces in the transverse direction. This method is concise and easy to apply, and hence, offers an attractive alternative to a lengthy and time consuming three dimensional modeling of the bridge as given by AASHTO under its Single Mode Spectral Analysis Method.

  • This paper deals with the Appliation of robust fault detection problem in uncertain linear systems, having both model mismatch and noise. A robust fault detection method presented by Kwon et al.(1994) for SISO uncertain systems. Here we experimented this method to the diesel engine systems described by difference ARMA models. The model mismatch includes here linearization error as well as undermodeling. Comparisons are made with alternative fault detection method which do not account noise. The new method is shown to have good performance.

  • This work is proposed an alternative identification method of outlying cell which is one of important issues in categorical data analysis. One finds that there is a strong relationship between the location of an outlying cell and the corresponding parameter estimates of the well-fitted log-linear model. Among parameters of log-linear model, an outlying cell is affected by interaction terms rather than main effect terms. Hence one could identify an outlying cell by investigating of parameter estimates in an appropriate log-linear model.

  • A class of standard optimization techniques to estimate the stationary transition probabilities among states is discussed. With the use of aggregate time series data on employed labor in industrial sectors, the alternative restricted estimates including minimum absolute deviation, unweighted, weighted, generalized inverse, minimum chi-square and maximum likelihood are evaluated and compared. Analytic and numerical results are shown favorably with the viewpoint of the validity and predictive potentiality of model.
