  • The effects of alternate bias stress on p-channel poly-Si TPT's has been systematically investigated. It has been shown that the application of alternate bias stress affects device degradation for the negative bias stress as well as device improvement for the positive bias stress. This effects have been related to the hot carrier injection into the gate oxide rather than the generation of defect states within the poly-Si/SiO$_2$ under bias stress.

  • The effects of alternate bias stress on p-channel poly-Si TFT\`s has been systematically investigated. We alternately applied positive and negative bias stress on p-channel poly-Si TFT\`s, device Performance(V$\_$th/, g$\_$m/, leakage current, S-slope) are alternately appeared to be increasing and decreasing. It has been shown that device performance degrade under the negative bias stress while improve under the positive bias stress. This effects have been related to the hot carrier injection into the gate oxide rather than the generation of defect states within the poly-Si/SiO$_2$ interface under alternate bias stress.

  • Improvement of steel material quality made fatigue problems more critical than failure of the material itself. In many cases, cracks on the welded parts of steel deck bridges are reported against the failure of steel materials. And the cracks are caused by alternate stress on the welded parts due to live loads on the bridge. The range of alternate stress on the welded part is related to property of the sections which compose othortropic steel deck. Othortropic steel deck is mainly composed of deck plate, ribs and floor beams, wearing surface, etc. In this paper, a methology to estimate the alternate stress for pthortropic steel deck using Pelikan-Esslinger method and signed Von-Mises equivalent stress is proposed first. Parametric study served references for fatigue stresses when designing or repairing othortropic steel deck bridges, by analyzing relationship between alternate stress range and properties of steel deck members.

  • In modern power systems, high penetration of distributed generators (DGs) results in high stress on system stability. Apart from the intermittent nature of DGs, most DGs do not contribute inertia or damping to systems. As a result, a new control method named virtual synchronous machine (VSM) was proposed, which brought new characteristics to inverters such as synchronous machines (SMs). In addition, different active power droop controls for VSMs are being proposed in literatures. However, they are quite different in terms of their dynamic characteristics despite of the similar control laws. In this paper, mathematical models of a VSM adopting different active power droop controls are built and analyzed. The dynamic performance of the VSM output active power and virtual rotor angular frequency are presented for different models. The influences of the damping factor and droop coefficient on the VSM dynamic behaviors are also investigated in detail. Finally, the theoretical analysis is verified by simulations and experimental results.

  • This paper provides a simple method by which to estimate the cross-section stress profiles for nozzles designed according to ASME Code Section III. Further, this method validates the effectiveness of earlier work performed by the authors on standard nozzles. The method requires only the geometric information of the pressure vessel and the attached nozzle. A PWR direct vessel injection nozzle, a PWR outlet nozzle, a PWR inlet nozzle and a BWR recirculation outlet nozzle are selected based on their corresponding specific designs, e.g., a varying nozzle radius, a varying nozzle thickness and an outlet nozzle boss. A cross-section stress profile comparison shows that the estimates are in good agreement with the finite element analysis results. Differences in stress intensity factors calculated in accordance with ASME BPVC Section XI Appendix G are discussed. In addition, a change in the dimensions of an alternate nozzle design relative to the standard values is discussed, focusing on the stress concentration factors of the nozzle inside corner.

  • In modern power systems, distributed generators (DGs) result in high stress on system frequency stability. Apart from the intermittent nature of DGs, most DGs do not contribute inertia or damping to systems. As a result, a new control method referred to as a virtual synchronous machine (VSM) has been proposed, which brought new characteristics to inverters such as synchronous machines (SM). DGs employing an energy storage system (ESS) provide inertia and damping through VSM control. Meanwhile, energy storage presents some physical constraints in the VSM implementation level. In this paper, a VSM mathematical model is built and analyzed. The dynamic responses of the output active power are presented when a step change in the frequency occurs. The influences of the inertia constant, damping factor and operating point on the ESS volume margins are investigated. In addition, physical constraints are proposed based on these analyses. The proposed physical constraints are simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC software and tested through RTDS experiment. Both simulation and RTDS test results verify the analysis.

  • This study was conducted to examine whether there is any effect of the local body exposure to hot and cold alternate stress on the blood flow and heart rate. Environmental condition was $20^{\circ}C$ air temperature, 65% relative humidity and 0.2m/s air movement. 22~32 years old four healthy female subjects wore clothes which they felt comfort sitting on a chair. And then their left hand was immersed twice in ($42^{\circ}C$\;and\;15^{\circ}C$ water alternately. Two of the subjects (E-group) were continually exposed to above condition 12 times. While, the other two (C-group) were exposed twice only at the 1st and 12th time of E-group's exposure. The results obtained from this experiment were as follows. \circled1 The initial response of the finger blood flow in I-group to the thermal stress showed more sensitively at the post-training than pre-training. \circled2 Heart .ate was higher in hand immersion at hot water ($42^{\circ}C$) than at cold water ($15^{\circ}C$) \circled3 The pattern of the blood flow of the finger and heart rate was different between E-group and C-group.

  • This paper investigates the effect of prolonged high temperature exposure on concentric laminated $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ composites. An ultrafine scale microstructure with a cellular 7 layer concentric lamination with unidirectional alignment was fabricated by a multi-pass extrusion method. Each laminate in the microstructure was $2-3{\mu}m$ thick. An alternate lamina was composed of 75%$Al_2O_3$-(25%m-$ZrO_2$) and t-$ZrO_2$ ceramics. The composite was sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$ and subjected to $1450^{\circ}C$ temperature for 24 hours to 72 hours. We investigated the effect of long time high temperature exposure on the generation of residual stress and grain growth and their effect on the overall stability of the composites. The residual stress development and its subsequent effect on the microstructure with the edge cracking behavior mechanism were investigated. The residual stress in the concentric laminated microstructure causes extensive micro cracks in the t-$ZrO_2$ layer, despite the very thin laminate thickness. The material properties like Vickers hardness and fracture toughness were measured and evaluated along with the microstructure of the composites with prolonged high temperature exposure.

  • The PEPS(Polar-coordinated Effective Plastic Strain) FLD(Forming Limit Diagram), a new type of FLD based on a polar representation of the EPS(Effective Plastic Strain), appears to be an effective solution to the problem of non-linear strain path effects. This method has the advantages of the familiar strain-based diagram for linear loading, but without the strain-hardening limitations of the stress-based diagram, or non-intuitive aspects of alternate Cartesian diagrams based on effective plastic strain. In the current study, the PEPS FLD was applied to the development process of an aluminum automobile-body panel, including the necking or crack prediction, die design, and die modification. As a result, the PEPS FLD provided improved formability of aluminum sheet as compared to deriving the potential formability with non-linearity.

  • Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to analyze behavior of copper nanowires under cyclic loading. The embedded atom method (EAM) potential is employed to represent atomic interaction. Cyclic load is applied in two ways (Forward Tension / Reverse Compression and Forward Compression / Reverse Tension). The results show that dislocations are piled up as a result of plastic deformation during alternate tensile and compressive loading. After cyclic loading with a change of direction, yield stress decreases in consequence of the effect by the dislocation pileups. On the other hand, under FC/RT cyclic load, phase transformation represent associated with mechanical twinning. And copper nanowire can return to almost former undeformed condition during tensile loading at 300K.
