Ni-plated polytetrafluoroethylene(Ni-PTFE) particles($25{\mu}m$, $500{\mu}m$) were prepared by using nickel electroless plating. The Ni content in Ni-PTFE particles increased with increasing the amount of reduction agent. At about 53 wt% Ni content, $25{\mu}m$ Ni-PTFE particles showed conductivity of 320S/m. The Ni-PTFE particles were formed into the Ni-PTFE plate using heat treatment at $350^{\circ}C$ under $10{\sim}1000kg/cm^2$. The Ni-PTFE plate displayed the high conductivity of 5100S/m due to the formation of 3-dimentional Ni network. The plate was used as an electrode in an alkaline fuel cell(AFC). In terms of the current density, the Ni-PTFE electrode having higher Ni content(53 wt%) showed improved performance.
To prepare alkaline degreasing agents(SADAs), tetrasodium pyrophosphate(TSPP), $Na_2CO_3$, Tetronix T-701 (T-701), Na-dioctyl sulfosuccinate(303C), Demol C, and MJU-100A were blended. The prepared degreasing agents were tested with steel specimens and the results were as follows. The degreasing powers of SADA-6($Na_2CO_3$ 50g/TSPP 25g/T-701 10g/303C 15g/Demol C 12g/MJU-100A 8g/water 130g mixture) for press-rust preventing oil were 98% and 99% degreasing at 4wt%, 70 $^{\circ}C$ and 90 $^{\circ}C$, respectively; for quenching oil, the degreasing power of SADA-6 was 92% degreasing at 4wt% and 70 $^{\circ}C$. From these results, it was proved that the SADA-6 exhibits a good degreasing power. Foam heights measured immediately after foaming by Ross & Miles method and Ross & Clark method at 6wt% and 60 $^{\circ}C$ were 16mm and 40mm, respectively. SADA-6 was proved a good low foaming degreasing agent.
The alkaline hydrolysis of alkyl alkylphosphinate and alkyl phenylphosphinates have been studied at room temperature. The hydrolysis proceeded as an one-stage reaction($S_{N}$ 2) and involved a nucleophilic attack of the hydroxyl ion on the phosphorus atom. And the length of the alkoxy group in the phosphinate esters affected on hydrolysis. Therefore, the alkaline hydrolysis may be used as a method to decompose the chemical agents.
Neutral or alkaline papermaking provides many advantages in paper strength and processing conditions. It also provides the opportunity of using calcium carbonate fillers in papermaking. These diverse advantages have made almost all paper machines of printing and writing papers run under neutral and alkaline conditions. On the other hand, linerboard machines, which use recycled papers as a raw material, are running under acid conditions using a rosin sizing system. Because the recycled raw materials used by the linerboard industry contain significant amounts of alkaline papers, the linerboard industry has an interest in the possibility of using the neutral or alkaline papermaking opportunity. In this study, the compatibility of the recycled linerboards under neutral or alkaline papermaking conditions was examined by recycling them under various pH conditions. The sizing degree of the papers recycled under neutral or alkaline was significantly lower than that of acid formed papers indicating that during the neutral or alkaline recycling process the rosin sized papers lost their sizing efficiency. Recycling of acid formed linerboards under neutral or alkaline conditions increased the amount of foam, and the foam contained substantial amount of solid materials derived from the acid sizing systems. Use of cationic polyelectrolytes including PEI and poly-DADMAC improved the sizing degree of the recycled papers under neutral and alkaline conditions. PEI decreased the foam generation as well while poly-DADMAC did not show any reducing effect of the foam. These results suggest that PEI forms coordinate bonds with rosin acid and precipitate them onto the surface of recycled fibers, while the reaction products between poly-DADMAC and rosin acid ions still remain water soluble under neutral or alkaline conditions.
Baker's yeast(Saccharomyces cerevisiae) was used as a biocatalyst for eco-friendly indigo dyeing and the reducing power of yeast according to the alkaline solution type was compared. NaOH solution, lye, and buffer solution were used as alkaline solutions. The reducing power(K/S value, oxidation/reduction potential(ORP), pH) was monitored according to the elapsed time including the initiation of reduction, peak reduction, and the end of reduction. In all alkaline solutions, it was confirmed that yeast can be used reducing agent in indigo reduction dyeing. The pH stability and reducing power of buffer solution was better than that of NaOH alone. Although, pH and ORP stability of the reduction bath in lye were better than that of buffer solution, K/S value in buffer solution was higher compared to lye. The reducing power was different depending on the starting pH of the dye bath, and it was better when starting at pH 10.70 than at pH 11.30. Fastnesses to washing, rubbing, and light were relatively good with above rating 4. There was no significant difference in colorfastness depending on the type of alkaline solutions.
The mechanisms of benzene toxicity is not fully elucidated, although the metabolism of benzene is very well understood. In order to study the mechanism of benzene toxicity, we investigated DNA damage induced by benzene metabolite, 1,2,4-benzenetriol (BT) in HL-60 cells by alkaline comet assay. To investigate the mechanism of cellular DNA damage induced by BT, the cells were treated with antioxidant such as vitamin C, SOD, catalase, and chelating agent such as deferoxamine (DFO), bathocuproinedisulfonic acid (BCDS). BT induced DNA damage in dose-dependent manner at concentration between 10$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 100$\mu\textrm{m}$. The antioxidant vitamin C itself induced DNA damage at higher concentration. The DNA damage induced by BT in HL-60 cells was protected at low concentraiton of vitamin C whereas no protective effect was found at high concentration. In hibitory effect of SOD on DNA damage by BT was observed and this suggested that BT produce superoxide anion (O2-) causing DNA damage. Catalase protected BT-induced DNA damage suggesting that BT produce H2O2 during autooxidation of BT. Both Fe(II)-specific cheiating agent, deferoxamine (DFO) and Cu(I)-specific chelating agent, bathocuproinedisulfonic acid (BCDS) inhibited BT0induced DNA damage. This suggested that DNA damage was caused by active species which was produced DAN damage. This suggested that DNA damage was caused by active species which was produced by the autooxidation of BT in the presence of Cu(II) and Fe(III). These findings suggest that reactive oxygen species play an important role in the mechanism of toxicity induced by benzene metabolites.
We investigated cleaning effects using $NH_4OH$ solution on the surface of Cu film. A 20 nm Cu film was deposited on Ti / p-Si (100) by sputter deposition and was exposed to air for growth of the native Cu oxide. In order to remove the Cu native oxide, an $NH_4OH$ cleaning process with and without TS-40A pre-treatment was carried out. After the $NH_4OH$ cleaning without TS-40A pretreatment, the sheet resistance Rs of the Cu film and the surface morphology changed slightly(${\Delta}Rs:{\sim}10m{\Omega}/sq.$). On the other hand, after $NH_4OH$ cleaning with TS-40A pretreatment, the Rs of the Cu film changed abruptly (${\Delta}Rs:till{\sim}700m{\Omega}/sq.$); in addition, cracks showed on the surface of the Cu film. According to XPS results, Si ingredient was detected on the surface of all Cu films pretreated with TS-40A. This Si ingredient(a kind of silicate) may result from the TS-40A solution, because sodium metasilicate is included in TS-40A as an alkaline degreasing agent. Finally, we found that the $NH_4OH$ cleaning process without pretreatment using an alkaline cleanser containing a silicate ingredient is more useful at removing Cu oxides on Cu film. In addition, we found that in the $NH_4OH$ cleaning process, an alkaline cleanser like Metex TS-40A, containing sodium metasilicate, can cause cracks on the surface of Cu film.
Alkaline protease which is an important enzyme used in detergents, leather tanning and food industry was produced by alkalophilic bacterium, Bacillus sp. KCTC 1723 isolated from soil. The maximum productivity of the enzyme in alkaline medium containing 1% sodium bicarbonate was obtained by incubating for 3 days at 37$^{\circ}C$. The optimum pH of the enzyme was 11.5 and calcium ion was effective on stabilization of the enzyme at high temperature. The enzyme was not inhibited by metal chelating agent such as El)TA but inhibited by diisopropyl fluorophosphate. Purification of the enzyme was carried out DEAE- and CM-cellulose column chromatographies and molecular weight of the purified enzyme was determined
