In the flat panel display and semiconductor industries, the visual alignment system is considered as a core technology which determines the productivity of a manufacturing line. It consists of the vision system to extract the centroids of alignment marks and the stage control system to compensate the alignment error. In this paper, we develop a Kalman filter algorithm to estimate the alignment mark postures and propose a coarse-fine alignment control method which utilizes both original fine images and reduced coarse ones in the visual feedback. The error compensation trajectory for the distributed joint servos of the alignment stage is generated in terms of the inverse kinematic solution for the misalignment in task space. In constructing the estimation algorithm, the equation of motion for the alignment marks is given by using the forward kinematics of alignment stage. Secondly, the measurements for the alignment mark centroids are obtained from the reduced images by applying the geometric template matching. As a result, the proposed Kalman filter based coarse-fine alignment control method enables a considerable reduction of alignment time.
Apart from the deposition of alignment layer, alignment process needs to be involved for alignment of liquid crystal (LC) molecules. To simplify manufacturing process, several method were used such as rubbing, ion-beam irradiation, UV irradiation, and lithography. But, eventually it needs another treatment for LC alignment. Here, we suggested Si induced polyimide (PI) alignment layer at low temperature. Using this method, we are able to eliminate the alignment process and found that the alignment and electro-optic performance are much better than that of the rubbed PI LC cells. Compared to the rubbed PI cells, the response time was decreased by 70% and C-V characteristics have hysteresis-free.
In this study, the degree of alignment of polymer microfibers produced by electrospinning using a rotating water collector was evaluated. Aligned micro- and nano-fibers are required in various practical applications involving anisotropic properties. The degree of fiber alignment has many significant effects; hence, and accurate quantitative analysis of fiber alignment is necessary. Therefore, this study developed a simple and efficient method based on two-dimensional fast Fourier transform, followed by ellipse fitting. As a demonstrative example, the polymer microfibers were electrospun on the rotating water collector as the alignment of microfibers can be easily controlled. The analysis shows that the flow velocity of the liquid collector significantly affects the electrospun microfiber alignment, that is, the higher the flow velocity of the liquid collector, the greater is the degree of microfiber alignment. This method can be used for analyzing the fiber alignment in various fields such as smart sensors, fibers, composites, and textile engineering.
We developed an improved method for tilt series alignment with fiducial markers in electron tomography. Based on previous works regarding alignment, we adapted the Levenberg-Marquardt method to solve the nonlinear least squares problem by incorporating a new formula for the alignment model. We also suggested a new method to estimate the initial value for inversion with higher accuracy. The proposed approach was applied to geopolymers. A better alignment of the tilt series was achieved than that by IMOD S/W. The initial value estimation provided both stability and a good rate of convergence since the new method uses all marker positions, including those partly covering the tilt images.
Liquid crystal (LC) alignment using a photoalignment method by irradiation of polarized ultraviolet (UV) on an alignment layer has been investigated. Photoalignment method exhibits weaker anchoring energy than rubbing method so that we have studied electro-optic characteristics of fringe-field switching (FFS) mode with alignment layers using the photo and rubbing alignment methods. The cell using photo alignment layer shows lower threshold and operation voltage than those using rubbed alignment layer. Also, the former method shows higher transmittance than that of the latter.

We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities by the UV alignment method on a a-C:H thin film surface. A good LC alignment by UV exposure on the a-C.H thin film surface at 200 ${\AA}$ of layer thickness was achieved. Also, a good LC alignment by the UV alignment method on the a-C:H thin film surface was observed at annealing temperature of 180 $^{\circ}C$. However, the alignment defect of the NLC was observed above annealing temperature of 200 $^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the good thermal stability of LC alignment by the UV alignment method on the a-C:H thin film surface can be achieved.
In this paper, we propose a new image alignment technique based on CUDA SURF in order to solve the initial image alignment problem that frequently occurs in machine vision applications. Machine vision systems using multi-spectral images have recently become more common for solving various decision problems that cannot be performed by the human vision system. These machine vision systems mostly use markers for the initial image alignment. However, there are some applications where the markers cannot be used and the alignment techniques have to be changed whenever their markers are changed. In order to solve these problems, we propose a new image alignment method for multi-spectral machine vision applications based on SURF extracting image features without depending on markers. In this paper, we propose an image alignment method that obtains a sufficient number of feature points from multi-spectral images using SURF and removes outlier iteratively based on a least squares method. We further propose an effective preliminary scheme for removing mismatched feature point pairs that may affect the overall performance of the alignment. In addition, we reduce the execution time by implementing the proposed method using CUDA based on GPGPU in order to guarantee real-time operation. Simulation results show that the proposed method is able to align images effectively in applications where markers cannot be used.

This paper describes the antenna alignment method of the tracking antenna system for LEO satellite. The purpose of the antenna alignment is to reduce the angular error due to the structural alignment and the monopulse null point alignment error. The angular error of 3 axis tracking system is the key performance parameter that should be minimized to accurately track satellite movement. The angular error is analyzed via a simulation and boresight measurement. The simulation is done with formulas to be derived from vector concept for 3-axis movement. The formulas of the structural alignment are verified by comparing the formula result with the field measurement. Also, the angular error due to monopulse null shift is obtained via boresight measurement. Based on the analyzed and measured results, the antenna alignment was performed and was verified via tracking test of operating LEO satellite.
Transfer alignement is the process of initializing attitude of slave INS using the data of master INS. This paper presents the performance analysis of transfer alignment at sea using convariance analysis method. Velocity & angle matching and angular rate & acceleration matching are used for analysis, and the performance of two matching methods are compared. We propose a new method for angular rate & acceleration matching. Under the assumption of accurate modeling of ship flexure, the performance of transfer alignment time and accuray is improved very much for the new method.
