  • In this paper, fraction division algorithms in Korean elementary mathematics textbooks are analyzed as a part of the groundwork to improve teaching methods for fraction division algorithms. There are seemingly six fraction division algorithms in ${\ll}Math\;5-2{\gg}$, ${\ll}Math\;6-1{\gg}$ textbooks according to the 2006 curriculum. Four of them are standard algorithms which show the multiplication by the reciprocal of the divisors modally. Two non-standard algorithms are independent algorithms, and they have weakness in that the integration to the algorithms 8 is not easy. There is a need to reconsider the introduction of the algorithm 4 in that it is difficult to think algorithm 4 is more efficient than algorithm 3. Because (natural number)${\div}$(natural number)=(natural number)${\times}$(the reciprocal of a natural number) is dealt with in algorithm 2, it can be considered to change algorithm 7 to algorithm 2 alike. In textbooks, by converting fraction division expressions into fraction multiplication expressions through indirect methods, the principles of calculation which guarantee the algorithms are explained. Method of using the transitivity, method of using the models such as number bars or rectangles, method of using the equivalence are those. Direct conversion from fraction division expression to fraction multiplication expression by handling the expression is possible, too, but this is beyond the scope of the curriculum. In textbook, when dealing with (natural number)${\div}$(proper fraction) and converting natural numbers to improper fractions, converting natural numbers to proper fractions is used, but it has been never treated officially.

  • Viola and Jones object detection algorithm is a representative face detection algorithm. The algorithm uses Haar-like features for face expression and uses a cascade-Adaboost algorithm consisting of strong classifiers, a linear combination of weak classifiers for classification. This algorithm requires several parameter settings for its implementation and the set values affect its performance. This paper analyzes face detection performance according to the parameters set in the algorithm.

  • Underwater communication (UWC) is widely used in coastal surveillance and early warning systems. Precise channel estimation is vital for efficient and reliable UWC. The sparse direct-adaptive filtering algorithms have become popular in UWC. Herein, we present an improved adaptive convex-combination method for the identification of sparse structures using a reweighted normalized leastmean-square (RNLMS) algorithm. Moreover, to make RNLMS algorithm independent of the reweighted l1-norm parameter, a modified sparsity-aware adaptive zero-attracting RNLMS (AZA-RNLMS) algorithm is introduced to ensure accurate modeling. In addition, we present a quantitative analysis of this algorithm to evaluate the convergence speed and accuracy. Furthermore, we derive an excess mean-square-error expression that proves that the AZA-RNLMS algorithm performs better for the harsh underwater channel. The measured data from the experimental channel of SPACE08 is used for simulation, and results are presented to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm. The simulation results confirm that the proposed algorithm for underwater channel estimation performs better than the earlier schemes.

  • In this research, we propose an automatic knowledge acquisition and composite knowledge expression mechanism based on machine learning and relational database. Most of traditional approaches to develop a knowledge base and inference engine of expert systems were based on IF-THEN rules, AND-OR graph, Semantic networks, and Frame separately. However, there are some limitations such as automatic knowledge acquisition, complicate knowledge expression, expansibility of knowledge base, speed of inference, and hierarchies among rules. To overcome these limitations, many of researchers tried to develop an automatic knowledge acquisition, composite knowledge expression, and fast inference method. As a result, the adaptability of the expert systems was improved rapidly. Nonetheless, they didn't suggest a hybrid and generalized solution to support the entire process of development of expert systems. Our proposed mechanism has five advantages empirically. First, it could extract the specific domain knowledge from incomplete database based on machine learning algorithm. Second, this mechanism could reduce the number of rules efficiently according to the rule extraction mechanism used in machine learning. Third, our proposed mechanism could expand the knowledge base unlimitedly by using relational database. Fourth, the backward inference engine developed in this study, could manipulate the knowledge base stored in relational database rapidly. Therefore, the speed of inference is faster than traditional text -oriented inference mechanism. Fifth, our composite knowledge expression mechanism could reflect the traditional knowledge expression method such as IF-THEN rules, AND-OR graph, and Relationship matrix simultaneously. To validate the inference ability of our system, a real data set was adopted from a clinical diagnosis classifying the dermatology disease.

  • Baicalin, a biologically active flavonoid form the roots of Scutallaria baicalensis (Skullcap), have been reported to not only function as anti-oxidants but also cause anticancer effect. We investigated the mechanism of baicalin-induced cytotoxicity and the macro scale gene expression analysis in leukemia cell line, HL-60 cells. Baicalin (10 μM) were used to treat the cells for 6h, 12h, 24h, 48h and 72h. In a human cDNAchip study of 65,000 genes evaluated 6, 12, 24, 48. 72 hours after treated with Baicalin in HL-60 cells. Hierarchical cluster against the genes which showed expression changes by more than two fold. One hundred one genes were grouped into 6 clusters according to their profile of expression by a hierarchical clustering algorithm. For genes differentially expressed in response to baicalin treatment, we tested functional classes based on Gene Ontology (GO) terms. This study provides the most comprehensive available survey of gene expression changes in response to baicalin treatment in HL-60 cell line.

  • It is difficult to define and classify human emotion. These vague human emotion appear not in single emotion, but in combination of various emotion. And among them, a remarkable emotion is expressed. This paper proposes a emotional expression algorithm using dynamic emotion space, which give facial expression in similar with vague human emotion. While existing avatar express several predefined emotions from database, our emotion expression system can give unlimited various facial expression by expressing emotion based on dynamically changed emotion space. In order to see whether our system practically give complex and various human expression, we perform real implementation and experiment and verify the efficacy of emotional expression system based on dynamic emotion space.

  • In this paper, we present realistic 3D head modeling and facial expression systems. For 3D head modeling, we perform generic model fitting to make individual head shape and texture mapping. To calculate the deformation function in the generic model fitting, we determine correspondence between individual heads and the generic model. Then, we reconstruct the feature points to 3D with simultaneously captured images from calibrated stereo camera. For texture mapping, we project the fitted generic model to image and map the texture in the predefined triangle mesh to generic model. To prevent extracting the wrong texture, we propose a simple method using a modified interpolation function. For generating 3D facial expression, we use the vector muscle based algorithm. For more realistic facial expression, we add the deformation of the skin according to the jaw rotation to basic vector muscle model and apply mass spring model. Finally, several 3D facial expression results are shown at the end of the paper.

  • This paper introduces a new model based method for facial expression recognition that uses facial grid angles as feature space. In order to be able to recognize the six main facial expression, proposed method uses a grid approach and therefore it establishes a new feature space based on the angles that each gird's edge and vertex form. The way taken in the paper is robust against several affine transformations such as translation, rotation, and scaling which in other approaches are considered very harmful in the overall accuracy of a facial expression recognition algorithm. Also, this paper demonstrates the process that the feature space is created using angles and how a selection process of feature subset within this space is applied with Wrapper approach. Selected features are classified by SVM, 3-NN classifier and classification results are validated with two-tier cross validation. Proposed method shows 94% classification result and feature selection algorithm improves results by up to 10% over the full set of feature.

  • Human emotion can be reflected by their facial expressions. So, it is one of good ways to understand people's emotions by recognizing their facial expressions. General recognition system of facial expressions had selected interesting points, and then only extracted features without analyzing physical meanings. They takes a long time to find interesting points, and it is hard to estimate accurate positions of these feature points. And in order to implement a recognition system of facial expressions on real-time embedded system, it is needed to simplify the algorithm and reduce the using resources. In this paper, we propose a real-time recognition algorithm of facial expressions that project the grid points on an expression space based on Gabor wavelet feature. Facial expression is simply described by feature vectors on the expression space, and is classified by an neural network with its resources dramatically reduced. The proposed system deals 5 expressions: anger, happiness, neutral, sadness, and surprise. In experiment, average execution time is 10.251 ms and recognition rate is measured as 87~93%.
