we performed the underwater explosion analysis for the liquefied oxygen tank - a kind of fuel tank of a mid-size submarine, and tried to verify the structural safety for this structure. First, we reviewed the theory and application of underwater explosion analysis using Structure-Fluid Interaction technique and its finite element modeling scheme. Next, we modeled the explosive and sea water as fluid elements, the LOX tank as structural elements and the interface between two regions as ALE scheme. The effect on shock pressure and impulse of fluid mesh size and shape are also investigated. As the analysis result, the shock pressure due explosion propagated into the water region and hit the structure region. The plastic deformation and the equivalent stress highly appeared at the web frame and the shock mount of LOX structure, but these values were acceptable for design criteria.
Two dimensional numerical models and physical models have been developed to study the highly nonlinear interactions between waves and breakwaters, but several of these models consider the effects of the structural dynamic responses and the shape of the breakwater axis on the wave pressures. In this study, a multi-material Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) method is developed to simulate the nonlinear interactions between nonlinear waves and elastic seawalls on a coastal rubble mound breakwater, and is validated experimentally. In the experiment, a solitary wave is generated and used with a physical breakwater model. The wave impact is validated computationally using a breakwater - flume coupling model that replicates the physical model. The computational results, including those for the wave pressure and the water-on-deck, are in good agreement with the experimental results. A local breakwater model is used to discuss the effects of the structural dynamic response and different design parameters of the breakwater on wave loads, together with pressure distribution up the seawall. A large-scale breakwater model is used to numerically study the large-scale wave impact problem and the horizontal distribution of the wave pressures on the seawalls.
This study was carried out to investigate the supplementary effects of Suwon 464, which has over two times of dietary fiber content compared with normal rice (Ilpum), on blood glucose in diabetic mice. We supplied 5 kinds of experimental diets (corn starch diet as a control (CO), Ilpum polished rice diet (IP), Ilpum brown rice diet (IB), polished rice diet (SP) and brown rice diet (SB) of Suwon 464) to diabetic mice for 8 weeks, after analyzing dietary fiber contents of 5 experimental diets. Diet intake, body weight and contents of blood glucose, hemoglobin $A_{lc}$ and insulin were measured. The dietary fiber contents in CO, IP, IB, SP, and SB diets were 1.0, 1.2, l.4, l.4, and 2.0% respectively. Body weight was lower in SB group than the other groups though there was no significant difference in diet intake among experimental groups. The concentration of blood glucose in diabetic mice was lower in SB group than the other groups during the supplementary period of experimental diets. The hemoglobin Ale and serum insulin levels were lower in SP and SB groups. These results suggested that the brown rice of Suwon 464 with high dietary fiber can control diabetes in diabetic mice by reducing the blood glucose and hemoglobin Ale. Kinetic energy conservation for fixed and moving grids is examined in time-accurate finite element computation of fully unsteady inviscid flows. As numerical algorithms, fractional step method (FSM) and modified SIMPLE are used. To simulate the flow in moving grid system, arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method is adopted. In the present study, the energy conserving time integration rule for finite element algorithm is proposed and discussed schematically. It is shown that the discretization by Crank-Nicolson in time and Galerkin (central difference) in space must be used to ensure energy conservation. The developed code has been tested for a standing vortex in fixed or moving grid system, sloshing in a tank and propagation of a solitary wave, and has been shown to be a completely energy conserving algorithm.
The objective of the present study is to analyze the fluid flow with moving boundary using a finite element method. The algorithm uses a fractional step approach that can be used to solve low-speed flow with large density changes due to intense temperature gradients. The explicit Lax-Wendroff scheme is applied to nonlinear convective terms in the momentum equations to prevent checkerboard pressure oscillations. The ALE (Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) method is adopted for moving grids. The numerical algorithm in the present study is validated for two-dimensional unsteady flow in a driven cavity and a natural convection problem. To extend the present numerical method to engine simulations, a piston-driven intake flow with moving boundary is also simulated. The density, temperature and axial velocity profiles are calculated for the three-dimensional unsteady piston-driven intake flow with density changes due to high inlet fluid temperatures using the present algorithm. The calculated results are in good agreement with other numerical and experimental ones.
Effect of growth temperature ($T_g$) on the structural and optical properties of $In_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}As$ atomic layer epitaxial (ALE) quantum dots (QDs) is investigated in the range of $T_g=480-510^{\circ}C$. $In_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}As$ ALE QDs consist of 5 periods of short-period superlattices (SPSs) of 1 monolayer-thick InAs and GaAs. Number of coalescent QDs decreases as $T_g$ increases, and they disappear at $T_g=510^{\circ}C$. As $T_g$ increases in the range of $480-495^{\circ}C$, sizes of QDs increase, and densities of QDs decrease due to merge of QDs. On the contrary, although sizes of QDs are maintained at $T_g=495-510^{\circ}C$, densities of QDs decrease. This is attributed to the desorption of material-mainly indium-during the growth interruption. This conjecture is supported by the optical properties of the QDs as a function of $T_g$. As a result, we propose that optimum growth temperature of the QD is $495^{\circ}C$ with less repetition of SPSs than 5.
