Study on the Analysis of Wear Phenomena of Ion-Nitrided Steel (이온질화 처리강의 마모현상 분석에 관한 연구)

  • This paper deals with wear characteristics of ion-nitrided metal theoretically and experimentally in order to analysis of wear phenomena. Wear tests show that compound layer of ion-nitrided metal reduces wear rate when the applied wear load is mall. However, as th load becomes large, the existence of compound layer tends to increase wear rate. The residual stress at the surface of ion-nitrided metal is measured, and the internal stress distribution is calculated when the normal and tangential forces are applied to the surface of metal. Compressive residual stress is largeest at the compound layer, and decreases as the depth from the surface increases. Calculation shows that the maximum stress exists at a certain depth from the surface when normal and tangential force are applied, and that the larger the wear load is the deeper the location of maximum stress becomes. In the analysis, it is found that under small applied wear load the critical depth, where voids and cracks may be created and propagated, is located at the compound layer, as the adhesive wear, where hardness is an important factor, is created the existence of compound layer reduces the amount of wear. When the load becomes large the critical depth is located below the compound layer, and delamination, which may be explained by surface deformation, crack nucleation and propagation, is created, and the existence of compound layer increases wear rate.

  • The river environments of many streams in korea have been deteriorate through the rapid industrialization and urbanization since the 1960s. In Germany and Japan, on the other hand, much efforts on the research and project have been made for the restoration of the deteriorated streams to close-to-nature. in order to restore the deteriorated streams, therefore, it is necessary to investigate such advanced technologies and materials. In view of this requirement, various research paths are being taken focusing on coarse aggregates to make multi-functional porous concrete having continuous voids so as to improve water and air permeability, acoustic absorption, water purification, and applicability to vegetation. The Purpose of this study is to investigate the method for recovery of the environment in the streams area using porous concrete block. the porous concrete block applies for test in the cheonggae-cheon have been monitored planting during six month. after 6 months, plant grows flourishing and reconstructed in state such as nature rivers.

  • The wear behavior of $Al_2$O$_3$-40%TiO$_2$deposited on casted aluminum alloy (ASTM A356) by APS (Air Plasma Spray) against SiC ball has been investigated in this work. Wear tests were carried out at room temperature. The friction coefficient of $Al_2$O$_3$-40%TiO$_2$coating is lower than that of pure $Al_2$O$_3$coating(APS). $Al_2$O$_3$-40%TiO$_2$coating indicated the existence of the optimal coating thickness. It is found that voids and pores of coating surface resulted in the generation of cracks, and the cohesive of splats and the porosity of surface play a role in wear characteristics. It is suggested that the mismatch of thermal expansion of substrate and coating play an important role in wear performance. Tension and compression under thermo-mechanical stress may be occurred by the mismatch between thermal expansion of substrate and coating. The crack propagation above interface is observed in SEM.

High-temperature Oxidation of Fe-2%Ni Alloys (Fe-2%Ni 합금의 고온 산화)

  • Fe-2 wt.%Ni alloys were fabricated by metal powder injection molding, and their oxidation behavior at $600-700^{\circ}C$ for 30 h in air was studied in order to find the effect of the small addition of Ni in the iron matrix on the high-temperature oxidation. Oxide scales that formed after oxidation consisted primarily of $Fe_2O_3$, where microscopic voids were scattered. Nickel was segregated initially at the scale/matrix interface, and later at the lower part of the $Fe_2O_3$ scale. At $600^{\circ}C$, Fe-2wt.%Ni alloys oxidized parabolically initially, and linearly after 15 h. At $650-700^{\circ}C$, they oxidized linearly from the initial period. Although Fe-2wt.%Ni alloys oxidized slower than pure iron, their oxidation rates were relatively fast.

  • The aim of this study is to consider the effect hydrogen on dezincification behavior of Cu-Zn alloys. The investigations include microstructural observations with scanning electron microscope and chemical composition analysis with energy dispersive spectrometer. The dezincification layer was found to occur in high pressure hydrogen atmosphere, not in air atmosphere. In addition, the layers penetrated into the inner side along the grain boundaries in the case of hydrogen condition. The shape of the dezincification layers was porous because of Zn dissolution from the ${\alpha}$ or ${\beta}$ phase. In the case of stress corrosion cracks formed in the Cu-Zn microstructure, the dezincification phenomenon with porous voids was also accompanied by grain boundary cracking.

Effect of Si on the High Temperature Oxidation of TiAl Alloys (Si 첨가가 TiAl 합금의 내산화성에 미치는 영향)

  • Arc-melted alloys of TiAl-(o.25, 0.5, 1.0at%) Si were isothermally oxidized at 800, 900 and $1000^{\circ}C$ in air for 60hr. It was found that the oxidation resistance of the prepared TiAl-Si alloys was much better than that of pure TiAl, being progressively increasing with an increase in the Si content. This was attributed to the formation of $SiO_2$in addition to ($TiO_2$+$Al_2$$O_3$) oxides which formed in TiAl alloys with and without silicon additions. However, the silica formation within the oxide layer unfortunately accelerated the oxide scale spallations. During oxidation, all the elements in the base alloy diffused outward, whereas oxygen from the atmosphere diffused inward. The oxides were primarily composed of an outer thick $TiO_2$layer, an intermediate diffuse $Al_2$$O_3$layer and an inner $TiO_2$layer. A small amount of $SiO_2$was present all over the oxide scale and some voids were found around the intermediate layer.

  • We develop a new nonwoven composite separator for a safer lithium-ion battery, which is based on coating of silica ($SiO_2$) colloidal particles/styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) binder to a poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) nonwoven support. The $SiO_2$ particles are interconnected by the SBR binder and closely packed in the nonwoven composite separator, which thus allows for the development of unusual porous structure, i.e. highly-connected interstitial voids formed between the $SiO_2$ particles. The PET nonwoven serves as a mechanical support that contributes to suppressing thermal shrinkage of the nonwoven composite separator. The $SiO_2$/SBR content in the nonwoven composite separators plays an important role in determining their separator properties. Porous structure, air permeability, and electrolyte wettability of the nonwoven composite separators, in comparison to a commercialized polyethylene (PE) separator, are elucidated as a function of the $SiO_2$/SBR content. Based on this understanding of the nonwoven composite separators, the effect of $SiO_2$/SBR content on the electrochemical performances such as self-discharge, discharge capacity, and discharge C-rate capability of cells assembled with the nonwoven composite separators is investigated.

  • Electrofusion(EF) joints have been widely used as they are easy to fuse and suitable for high-quality joints for polyethylene(PE) pipes. This paper studies the cause of defects and classifies 5 types of defects. The defect detection technique for electrofusion joints of polyethylene piping is utilized by the ultrasonic phased array technique to obtain ultrasonic images of electrofusion joints. Test sample joints have been designed and fabricated using artificial defects which were made using paper. Finally, we studied the condition of electrofusion in the field and analyzed the main causes of defects. And we classified the defect types as local lack of fusion, sand inclusion, voids or air inclusion, short stab, excess penetration or excess bead.

Corrosion of Fe-(8.5~36.9) wt% Cr Alloys at 600~800℃ in (N2, H2S, H2O)-Mixed Gases (Fe-(8.5~36.9) wt% Cr합금의 600~800℃, (N2,H2S,수증기)-혼합 가스분위기에서의 부식)

  • Fe-(8.5, 18.5, 28.3, 36.9) wt% Cr alloys were corroded between 600 and $800^{\circ}C$ for up to 70 h in a 1 atm gas mixture that consisted of 0.0242 atm of $H_2S$, 0.031 atm of water vapor, and 0.9448 atm of nitrogen gas. Their corrosion resistance increased with an increment in the Cr content. The Fe-8.5%Cr alloy corroded fast, forming thick, fragile, nonadherent scales that consisted primarily of an outer FeS layer and an inner (Fe, Cr, O, S)-mixed layer. The outer FeS layer grew into the air by the outward diffusion of $Fe^{2+}$ ions, whereas the inner mixed layer grew by the inward diffusion of oxygen and sulfur ions. At the interface of the outer and inner scales, voids developed and cracking occurred. The Fe-(18.5, 28.3, 36.9)% Cr alloys displayed much better corrosion resistance than the Fe-8.5Cr alloy, because thin $Cr_2O_3$ or $Cr_2S_3$ scales formed.
