High-temperature oxidation behaviors of ZrSi2 and its coating on the surface of Zircaloy-4 tube by laser 3D printing

  • The high-temperature oxidation behavior of ZrSi2 used as a coating material for nuclear fuel cladding was investigated for developing accident-tolerant fuel cladding of light water reactors. Bulk ZrSi2 samples were prepared by spark plasma sintering. In situ X-ray diffraction was conducted in air at 900, 1000, and 1100 ℃ for 20 h. The microstructures of the samples before and after oxidation were examined by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the oxide layer of zirconium silicide exhibited a layer-by-layer structure of crystalline ZrO2 and amorphous SiO2, and the high-temperature oxidation resistance was superior to that of Zircaloy-4 owing to the SiO2 layer formed. ZrSi2 was coated on the Zircaloy-4 tube surface using laser 3D printing, and the coated tube was oxidized for 2000 s at 1200 ℃ under a vapor/argon mixture atmosphere. The outer surface of the coated tube was hardly oxidized (10-30 ㎛), while the inner surface of the uncoated tube was significantly oxidized to approximately 300 ㎛.

  • To evaluate steam oxidation behaviours of Alloy 617 and Haynes 230, oxidation test were performed at $900^{\circ}C$ in steam and $steam+20\;vol.-%\;H_2$ environments. Oxidation rate in steam condition was similar to that in air for Alloy 617, while it was slightly lower for Haynes 230. When hydrogen was added to steam, oxidation rate was enhanced. Isolated $MnTiO_3$ particle were formed on $Cr_2O_3$ oxide layer and sub layer $Cr_2O_3$ were formed in steam and $steam+20\;vol.-%\;H_2$ for Alloy 617. On the other hands, $MnCr_2O_3$ layer were formed on top of $Cr_2O_3$ oxide layer for Haynes 230. The extensive sub layer $Cr_2O_3$ formation was resulted from the oxygen inward diffusion in such environments. When hydrogen was added, the oxide morphology was changed from polygonal to platelet because of the accelerated diffusion of cations under the oxide layer. In addition, decarburized zone was extended as hydrogen participated into the reactions causing carbide dissolution.

플라즈마 광촉매 복합 긍정을 이용한 악취물질 중 TEA, MEK의 분해처리 (Treatment of Odorous air pollutants by Plasma and Photocatalytic Process.)

  • Plasma-photocatalytic oxidation process was applied in the decomposition of Triethylamine(TEA) and Methyl ethyl ketone(MEK). Plasma reactor was made entirely of pyrex glass and consists of 24mm inner diameter, 1,800mm length and discharge electrode of 0.4mm stainless steel. And initial concentrations of TEA and MEK for plasma-photocatalytic oxidation are 100 ppm. Odor gas samples were taken by gas-tight syringe from a glass sampling bulb which was located at reactor inlet and outlet, and TEA and MEK were determined by GC-FID. For plasma process, the decomposition efficiency of TEA and MEK were evaluated by varying different flowrates and decomposition efficiency of TEA and MEK increased considerably with decreasing treatment flowrates. For photocatalytic oxidation process, also the decomposition efficiency of TEA and MEK increased considerably with decreasing treatment flowrates. The decomposition efficiency of MEK was 57.8%, 34.2%, 18.8% respectively and the decomposition efficiency of TEA was reached all 100%. This result is higher than that of plasma process only, From this study, the results indicate that plasma-photocatalytic oxidation process is ideal for treatment of TEA and MEK.

Oxidation Behavior of Oxide Particle Spray-deposited Mo-Si-B Alloys

  • The effect of spray deposition of oxide particles on oxidation behaviors of as-cast Mo-14.2Si-9.6B (at%) alloys at $1200^{\circ}C$ up to for 100 hrs has been investigated. Various oxide powders are utilized to make coatings by spray deposition, including $SiO_2,\;TiO_2,\;ZrO_2,\;HfO_2$ and $La_2O_3$. It is demonstrated that the oxidation resistance of the cast Mo-Si-B alloy can be significantly improved by coating with those oxide particles. The growth of the oxide layer is reduced for the oxide particle coated Mo-Si-B alloy. Especially, for the alloy with $ZrO_2$ coating, the thickness of oxide layer becomes only one fifth of that of uncoated alloys when exposed to in air for 100 hrs. The reduction of oxide scale growth of the cast Mo-Si-B alloy due to oxide particle coatings are discussed in terms of the change of viscosity of glassy oxide phases that form during oxidation at high temperature.

  • Air-oxidation experiments on unirradiated and irradiated UO$_2$ were performed at temperature from 150 to 375$^{\circ}C$ for investigating the long-term storage behavior of spent PWR fuel. The rate of oxidation was monitored by a thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA) and an X-ray diffraction(XRD). The correlation between the onset-time for U$_3$O$_{8}$ formation and temperature was given as follows, logt(hr) = -12.89+7650/T(K), 423$_2$ pellet, the oxidation rate of irradiated UO$_2$ increase more rapidly at the initial stage and shows a lower saturation point at the later Stage. The Oxidation rate of high bumup UO$_2$ and gadolinia-doped UO$_2$(Gd$_2$O$_3$-UO$_2$) were observed to be much slower than that of unirradiated UO$_2$ pellets.s.

  • The effects of initial concentration of dissolved oxygen content, Cu(II) and EDTA in an aqueous Cu(II)-EDTA solution on $TiO_2$ photo-oxidation of EDTA were investigated using $TiO_2$ (Degussa P-25) and UV irradiation at $20{\circ}C$. In the presence of dissolved oxygen and/or Cu(II) the photo-oxidation rates of EDTA were enhanced. The rates linearly increased in the range of initial Cu(II) concentration below 1.79 mM, while abode this concentration those were kept constant. The trend or the EDTA photo-oxidation rates appeared to be akin to the Langmuir-Hinshelwood equation farm and the k values calculated were 0.05 mM/min for the free-EDTA system, and 0.17 mM/min far the Cu(II)-EDTA system. These meant the aqueous EDTA decomposition was enhanced due to weakening of the intra-molecular bond strength of EDTA by complexation with Cu(II) added. It was concluded the decomposition of aqueous EDTA by $TiO_2$ photo-oxidation was maximum in the presence of dissolved oxygen supplied by air purging and of Cu(II) with its concentration for 1:1 Cu(II)-EDTA complexation ratio.

  • In this study, we devoted to kinetic measurement of the catalytic oxidation of iron-containing flame soot particles and better understanding the role of catalytic particles on carbon oxidation in particular at low temperature, targeting on autothermal regeneration of diesel particulate filter by diesel exhaust gas. Carbon-based Fe-containing particles generated by spraying ferrocene-doped diesel fuel in an oxy-hydrogen flame are tested and compared with a commercial carbon black powder for thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Induced coupled plasma-Atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), and High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). As a result, we found that a small amount of the ferrocene addition led to significant reductions in a on-set temperature and an activation energy of the carbon oxidation as well. An oxygenated surface complex forming at the particle surface could be thought as active species that would be readily consumed in particular at low temperature.

Ni의 산화가 고체산화물 연료전지용 Ni/YSZ 연료극의 미세조직과 전해질의 균열에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Oxidation of Ni on the Microstructure of Ni/YSZ Anode and Crack Formation in YSZ Electrolyte Layer for SOFC)

  • The microstructural changes in Ni/YSZ anode substrate and crack formation during Ni oxidation were investigated. The composition of as-sintered anodes was 56 wt% NiO+44 wt% YSZ and that of electrolyte was 8 mol% yttria. After complete reduction, specimens were oxidized in $N_2$ + air at $600\sim800^{\circ}C$. Oxygen partial pressure was controlled in between 0.05 atm and 0.2 atm $O_2$. When the anode was oxidized, at higher than $690^{\circ}C$, three layers were formed in the specimens. The first was fully oxidized layer(NiO/YSZ), the second was a mixed layer and the third, near-intact layer. Under $640^{\circ}C$ such distinctive layers were not observed. Cracks formed at electrolyte layer when weight gain attained at $65\sim75%$ of the total gain due to complete oxidation despite of different oxidation temperature and oxygen partial pressure.

  • The T23 steel, whose composition was Fe-2.3%Cr-1.6%W, was arc-melted, and oxidized between $600^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ in air for up to 7 months. The amount of precipitates in the arc-melted microstructure was as large as 11.4 vol.%. The precipitates increased the oxidation rate of the arc-melted T23 steel. Owing to the low amount of Cr in the T23 steel, breakaway oxidation occurred after a few hours during oxidation above $700^{\circ}C$ in both arc-melted and as-received T23 steels. The scales that formed on arc-melted and as-received T23 steels were similar to each other. They consisted primarily of the outer $Fe_2O_3$ layer and the inner ($Fe_2O_3$, $FeCr_2O_4$)-mixed layer. The precipitates increased the microhardness and the oxidation rates.

김해시 공업지역의 대기 중 Methylethylketone 측정과 활성산소종 생성에 관한 연구 (Detection of Methylethylketone in the Ambient Air of Industrial Area in Gimhae City and Its Effect on the Generation of Reactive Oxygen Species)

  • This study assessed the characteristics of emission and cell toxicology of Methylethylketone(MEK) in ambient air of industrial area. MEK is produced by the oxidation of sec-butyl alcohol and used as the solvent for making ink, printing, coating of film, bonding material and drug extraction. The MEK concentrations in the ambient-air of industrial area in Gimhae City was detected in the range of $25.4{\sim}1,580{\mu}g/m^3$ with an average $297.4{\mu}g/m^3$. The concentration of MEK showed a descending tendency from April to August followed by its increased tendency since then. The effects of MEK on the human lung cancer A549 cells was examined by the generation of Reactive Oxygen Species(ROS) and cytotoxicity. The range of MEK concentration detected in the area induced ROS generation affecting the oxidation state with a little effects on the viability of the cells.
