As the interest on the air pollution is gradually rising at home and abroad, automotive and fuel researchers have been studied on the exhaust and greenhouse gas emission reduction from vehicles through a lot of approaches, which consist of new engine design, innovative after-treatment systems, using clean (eco-friendly alternative) fuels and fuel quality improvement. This research has brought forward two main issues : exhaust emissions (regulated and non-regulated emissions, PM particle matter) and greenhouse gases of vehicle. Exhaust emissions and greenhouse gases of automotive had many problem such as the cause of ambient pollution, health effects. In order to reduce these emissions, many countries are regulating new exhaust gas test modes. Worldwide harmonized light-duty vehicle test procedure (WLTP) for emission certification has been developed in WP.29 forum in UNECE since 2007. This test procedure was applied to domestic light duty diesel vehicles at the same time as Europe. The air pollutant emissions from light-duty vehicles are regulated by the weight per distance, which the driving cycles can affect the results. Exhaust emissions of vehicle varies substantially based on climate conditions, and driving habits. Extreme outside temperatures tend to increasing the emissions, because more fuel must be used to heat or cool the cabin. Also, high driving speeds increases the emissions because of the energy required to overcome increased drag. Compared with gradual vehicle acceleration, rapid vehicle acceleration increases the emissions. Additional devices (air-conditioner and heater) and road inclines also increases the emissions. In this study, three light-duty vehicles were tested with WLTP, NEDC, and FTP-75, which are used to regulate the emissions of light-duty vehicles, and how much emissions can be affected by different driving cycles. The emissions gas have not shown statistically meaningful difference. The maximum emission gas have been found in low speed phase of WLTP which is mainly caused by cooled engine conditions. The amount of emission gas in cooled engine condition is much different as test vehicles. It means different technical solution requires in this aspect to cope with WLTP driving cycle.

The triad interactions have been known to be important only for shoaling waves or finite depth wind waves. In deep water, they are insignificant compared with the quadruplet interactions in respect to the evolution of wind waves due to energy transfer among the wave components. However, the triad interactions may be important even for deep water waves because they may closely be related to the wave steepness, which definitely affects wave breaking, drag of air flow over t.'Ie sea, or navigation of ships, especially during the early stage of the development of wind waves. This study reports a series of laboratory experiments, whose data are subjected to bispectral analyses to investigate the triad interactions of deep-water wind waves. It is found that the bicoherence at the spectral peak frequency and the wave steepness are almost directly proportional, indicating that the steep waves with peaked crests and flat troughs are resulted from the triad interactions. Both bicoherence and wave steepness increase with the wave age during the early stage of wave generation and then drop off as the waves grow old. It seems that the energy of the secondary spectral peak developed by the triad interactions during the early stage of wave generation is redistributed to the neighboring frequencies by the quadruplet interactions during the later stage.

Aerodynamic force measurements and phase-locked PIV study were carried out to check the bio-mimetic MAV applicability of a swift flight. Two-rotational DOF robotic wing model and blowing-type wind tunnel were employed. The amplitude of twist angle were ${\pm}0$, ${\pm}5$, ${\pm}10$, and ${\pm}20$ deg. and stroke angles were manipulated by simple harmonic function with out-of-phase in regards to the stroke motion. It is acknowledged that the time-varying lift coefficients in accordance with the change of the twist angle did not result in any noticeable differences, just the small decrease and delay. However, the drag exhibited that the small change of the twist angle can produce large thrust. These findings imply why a swift uses small twist angle during flight. The PIV results displayed that the delay of aerodynamic forces is highly associated with the vortical structures around the wing. It is therefore indicated that a process of designing a swift-based Micro Air Vehicle should take the twist angle into consideration, as the essential parameter.
After towing rope connecting a barge to a tug was subdivided into multiple finite elements, then those dynamic models was established using Newton's second law and considering the external force and moment such as tension, drag, Coriolis force, gravity, buoyancy, and impact due to free surface acting on each element. While the previous research on the model of towing rope considered only translation, five-degree-of-freedom equations of motion except roll based on the body-fixed frame were established in this paper. All elements are connected by a spring and a damper, and the stiffness of the spring was set as the equivalent value of the real rope. In order to confirm the established multiple finite element model, various scenarios such as freely falling of towing rope in the air and above the free surface, accelerating of a tug which tows a barge connected by towing rope, and sinusoidal moving of a tug were set up and simulated. As the results, the trajectories of the tug, the barge, and the towing rope showed good tendencies to the ones of real expected situations.
This paper was prepared to investigate the behavior of fragments in underwater torpedo explosion beneath a frigate or surface ship by using an explicit finite element analysis. In this study, a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) methodology, called the multi-material arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (MM-ALE) approach in LS-DYNA, was employed to obtain the responses of the torpedo fragments and frigate hull to the explosion. The Euler models for the analysis were comprised of air, water, and explosive, while the Lagrange models consisted of the fragment and the hull. The focus of this modeling was to examine whether a worst-case fragment could penetrate the frigate hull located close (4.5 m) to the exploding torpedo. The simulation was performed in two separate steps. At first, with the assumption that the expanding skin of the torpedo had been torn apart by consuming 30% of the explosive energy, the initial velocity of the worst-case fragment was sought based on a well-known experimental result concerning the fragment velocity in underwater bomb explosion. Then, the terminal velocity of the worst-case fragment that is expected to occur before the fragment hit the frigate hull was sought in the second step. Under the given conditions, the possible initial velocities of the worst-case fragment were found to be very fast (400 and 1000 m/s). But, the velocity difference between the fragment and the hull was merely 4 m/s at the instant of collision. This result was likely to be due to both the tremendous drag force exerted by the water and the non-failure condition given to the frigate hull. Anyway, at least under the given conditions, it is thought that the worst-case fragment seldom penetrate the frigate hull because there is no significant velocity difference between them.
In the present paper, the dynamic force-moment equilibrium equations, driving power and energy equations are analyzed to formulate the equation for fuel economy(km/liter) equivalent to the driving distance (km) divided by the fuel volume (liter) of the vehicle, a selected model of gasoline powered KIA K3 (1.6v). In addition, the effects of the dynamic parameters such as speed of vehicle (V), vehicle total weight(M), rolling resistance ($C_r$) between tires and road surface, inclined angle of road (${\theta}$), as well as the aerodynamic parameters such as drag coefficient ($C_d$) of vehicle, air density(${\rho}$), cross-sectional area (A) of vehicle, wind speed ($V_w$) have been analyzed. And the possibility of alternative materials such as lightweight metal alloys, fiber reinforced plastic composite materials to replace the conventional steel and casting iron materials and to reduce the weight of the vehicle has been investigated by Ashby's material index method. Through studies, the following results were obtained. The most influencing parameters on the fuel economy at high speed zone (100 km/h) were V, the aerodynamic parameters such as $C_d$, A, ${\rho}$, and $C_r$ and M. While at low speed zone (60 km/h), they are, in magnitude order, dynamic parameters such as V, M, $C_r$ and aerodynamic ones such as $C_d$, A, and ${\rho}$, respectively.

The high-Reynolds number flow around a rectangular cylinder, having streamwise to crossflow length ratio equal to 5 is analyzed in the present paper. The flow is characterized by shear-layer separation from the upstream edges. Vortical structures of different size form from the roll-up of these shear layers, move downstream and interact with the classical vortex shedding further downstream in the wake. The corresponding mean flow is characterized by a recirculation region along the lateral surface of the cylinder, ending by mean flow reattachment close to the trailing edge. The mean flow features on the cylinder side have been shown to be highly sensitive to set-up parameters both in numerical simulations and in experiments. The results of 21 Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are analyzed herein to highlight the impact of the lateral mean recirculation characteristics on the near-wake flow features and on some bulk quantities. The considered simulations have been carried out at Reynolds number Re=DU_∞/ν=40 000, being D the crossflow dimension, U_∞ the freestream velocity and ν the kinematic viscosity of air; the flow is set to have zero angle of attack. Some simulations are carried out with sharp edges (Mariotti et al. 2017), others with different values of the rounding of the upstream edges (Rocchio et al. 2020) and an additional LES is carried out to match the value of the roundness of the upstream edges in the experiments in Pasqualetto et al. (2022). The dimensions of the mean recirculation zone vary considerably in these simulations, allowing us to single out meaningful trends. The streamwise length of the lateral mean recirculation and the streamwise distance from the upstream edge of its center are the parameters controlling the considered quantities. The wake width increases linearly with these parameters, while the vortex-shedding non-dimensional frequency shows a linear decrease. The drag coefficient also linearly decreases with increasing the recirculation length and this is due to a reduction of the suctions on the base. However, the overall variation of C_D is small. Finally, a significant, and once again linear, increase of the fluctuations of the lift coefficient is found for increasing the mean recirculation streamwise length.

Warships widely spread numerous chaffs using a blast, which form chaff clouds that create false radar cross-sections to deceive enemy radars. In this study, we established a numerical framework based on a one-way coupling of computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method to simulate the spatiotemporal distribution of chaff clouds for warships in the air. Using the framework, we investigated the effects of wind, initial chaff cartridge angle, and blast pressure on the distribution of chaff clouds. We observed three phases for the chaff cloud diffusion: radial diffusion by the explosion, omnidirectional diffusion by turbulence and collision, and gravity-induced diffusion by the difference in the fall speed. The wind moved the average position of the chaff clouds, and the diffusion due to drag force did not occur. The direction of radial diffusion by the explosion depended on the initial angle of the cartridge, and a more vertical angle led to a wider distribution of the chaffs. As the blast pressure increased, the chaff clouds spread out more widely, but the distribution difference in the direction of gravity was not significant.
Flapping-wing air vehicles, well known for their free vertical take-off and excellent flight capability, are currently under intensive development and research. While most of the studies have explored the effect of various parameters of synchronized motions on the unsteady aerodynamics of flapping wings, limited attention has been given to the effect of nonsynchronous motions on the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of flapping wings. In the present study, we conducted a numerical analysis to investigate the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of an airfoil flapping with different frequency ratios between pitch and heave oscillations. We identified the motions and angle of attacks due to nonsynchronous motions. It was found that the synchronous motion produced thrust with zero lift, but the nonsynchronous motion generated a large lift with little drag. The aerodynamic characteristics of the airfoil undergoing the non-synchronous motion were also analyzed using the vorticity distributions and the pressure coefficient around and on the airfoil. When r was equal to 0.5, larger leading and trailing edge vortices were observed compared to the case when r was equal to 1.0, and these vortices significantly affected the aerodynamic characteristics of the airfoil undergoing the nonsynchronous motion. In future, the effect of pitch amplitude on the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of the airfoil will be studied.
