  • The objective of the study is to review the research materials for menarche including general characteristics of target population surveyed, mean age of subject, menarche experience rates of the subject and mean age at menarche, and to analyze secular trends of age at menarche in Korea from 1935 to 1992. The results of the study summarized as follows; 1. The range of age in the target pulation for menarcheal research was mainly 10-29 age groups, and most of them were middle, high school girls and college students. 2. There was positive relationship among mean age at menarche, level of menarche experiences rates and mean age of the subject(P<0.01). 3. In the relationship between the mean age at menarche and the level of menarche experience rate of the subject, the subject of study with higher menarche experience were more likely to be higher mean age at menarche than those with lower menarche experience rates. In case of menarcheal experience rates at 75-90 percent among the subject, the values of more and median were more close to the actual mean age at menarche under the assumption that all of the subject had experience menarche. 4. The trends of age at menarche during 1935-92 were linear decrement: Y = 85.93-0.036X in the whole country and Y = 91.35-0.039X in Seoul. The rates of secular diminution in age at menarche calculated to be about 4.3 months per decade in the nation-wide, and 4.6 months in Seoul during the periods. 5. To analyze the secular trends in menarcheal age, the researcher should set up criterians including the range of age in target population, the level of menarcheal experience rate and the regional characteristics.

  • In order to figure out the normal range, lower limit of hypertension and upper limit of hypotension of the blood pressure of Korean, authors had measured blood pressure according to Korotkow's method for 31,897 healthy persons as samples who were occupied different levels of the social class except cases who would seem to be the essential hypertension and had the diseases affecting to secondary hypertension. A following conclusion was induced by actual measurement and statistical reasoning. 1. The normal range and limits of hypo- and hypertension by sex and age groups of Korean were demonstrated in Table 1 and Figure 1. 2. The more aging the higher value of blood pressure in both sexes, especially women rather than men and systolic as to diastolic. 3. Generally, blood pressure values of female were lower than male, after 55 years of age, however, the crossing phenomenon was recognizable. 4. To settle the normal and abnormal ranges of the blood pressure of Korean, it was attempted that $M{\pm}1.282{\sigma}$ as normal range, $M+2{\sigma}$ as lower limit of hypertension and $M-2{\sigma}$ as upper limit of hypotension were calculated, and regression lines were drawn to adjust the biological variables and derive continuity from each age class. (Fig. 2 and 3) 5. The blood pressure levels were becoming elevated as to getting increased of the body weight, particularly diastolic value at 40-49 age group in male and systolic value at 30-39 age group in female.

  • The purpose of the study is to find the problems related to the current state of the stand age classes and the method of calculating it defined in the existing forest type map and propose the more accurate method of calculating the stand age classes. The object for the study was selected as the forest scattered around the Geesan village Paju city in Kyunggi province. For the accurate method of calculating the stand age classes, such items as, the type of actual vegetation, establishment of grid-type standard area scaled down at the level of the 5% of the actual area, the types, number, DBH and age of tree found by the plots, were investigated. It was found out actual vegetation was divided into the total 24 types and the 20 types of them belonged to the growing tree areas. As the plots, the 125 places(unit area: $400m^2$) were established the types of the trees found were distributed in the range where the minimum was 1 type, the maximum was 9, the mean was $4.4{\pm}1.5$, and the mode was 4 types. The number of the trees found was distributed in the range where the minimum was 17, the maximum was 125, the mean was $4.4{\pm}1.5$, and the mode was 70. In the DBH, the minimum was 6 cm, the maximum was 30 cm, the mean was 13 cm and the mode was 10 cm. As the result of measuring the age of the 5 trees corresponding to the value of the mode in DBH, selected among the dominant species by the plots, less than 20 years was 17 places, the 115 places were included in the range from 21 to 30 years, and more than 31 years was the 6 places.

  • Background/Objectives: To analyze the clinical characteristics of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) in children and adolescents. Materials & Methods: Medical records of 31 DTC cases that were diagnosed and treated at Korea Cancer Center Hospital between 2002 and 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Results: Most cases were papillary carcinoma (n=26), with female predominance (n=25). Median age was 16.4 years (range, 11.9-18.6 years). Extrathyroidal extension was present in 24 cases. Twenty cases had tumor involvement at cervical lymph nodes and three had lung metastasis. Twenty-two patients received radioactive iodide treatment with a median cumulative dose of 300 mCi (range, 100-920 mCi). During a median follow-up of 68.2 months (range, 2.3-191.4 months), serum thyroglobulin level was elevated in 15 patients. Among them, two cases had remnant thyroid tissue, 4 had recurrence at cervical lymph nodes, and the remaining 9 did not have any detectable lesion. All were alive, and 5-year event-free survival (EFS) was 45.2±10.1%. Age £15 years, tumor size, lymph node status (N1b), and distant metastasis had negative effects on EFS. On multivariate analysis, age and tumor size had prognostic significance. Conclusion: For DTC of children and adolescents (£18 years old), age ≤15 years and tumor size were prognostic factor. Therefore, patients in this age group need meticulous follow-up. Further studies are necessary to answer the potential influence of age on the incidence and behavior of DTC.

  • To grasp the size system of children's clothing online shopping malls, basic size charts for clothing products from 14 shopping malls were collected, compared, and analyzed. Looking at the age range of the basic size chart for each company, the minimum age is 1 year old, the maximum age is 14-15 years old, and all companies included ages up to 7 years. In addition, as for the number of size designations, children's clothing companies used seven to eight designations, and there were six types of size designation methods. Next, looking at the height range for each size, even with the same size designation method, the height range differed depending on the company. Also, the KS size standard does not consider body weight, but many companies use weight as a reference body size. Compared with the child body size data of the 6th Korean Body Size Data, the height and weight range for each size provided by the company showed differences between companies. The results of this study can be used in the future as basic data when revising and supplementing the clothing sizes in children's clothing companies.

  • Purpose: This study assessed the accuracy of age estimates produced by a regression equation derived from lower third molar development in a Thai population. Materials and Methods: The first part of this study relied on measurements taken from panoramic radiographs of 614 Thai patients aged from 9 to 20. The stage of lower left and right third molar development was observed in each radiograph and a modified Gat score was assigned. Linear regression on this data produced the following equation: Y=9.309+1.673 mG+0.303S (Y=age; mG=modified Gat score; S=sex). In the second part of this study, the predictive accuracy of this equation was evaluated using data from a second set of panoramic radiographs (539 Thai subjects, 9 to 24 years old). Each subject's age was estimated using the above equation and compared against age calculated from a provided date of birth. Estimated and known age data were analyzed using the Pearson correlation coefficient and descriptive statistics. Results: Ages estimated from lower left and lower right third molar development stage were significantly correlated with the known ages (r=0.818, 0.808, respectively, $P{\leq}0.01$). 50% of age estimates in the second part of the study fell within a range of error of ${\pm}1year$, while 75% fell within a range of error of ${\pm}2years$. The study found that the equation tends to estimate age accurately when individuals are 9 to 20 years of age. Conclusion: The equation can be used for age estimation for Thai populations when the individuals are 9 to 20 years of age.

  • Purpose : To determine normal CT number range of parotid gland by analyzing the change by age increase and the difference among individuals and between both sexes in CT number of normal parotid gland. Materials & Methods : 134 subjects who took the CT scan between the period of Jan. 1996 and Dec. 1997 at Yonsei University, Dental Hospital were selected. Criteria for selection were that the patients must be within the normal range clinically and radiologically, and the entire parotid gland on the axial view must be shown. Among the axial views. the one showing the greatest parotid gland size was selected and its CT number was recorded. Also. CT numbers from both masseter muscle were recorded as its control. Results : There was statistically significant correlation between CT number of right and left of parotid glands and masseter muscles. With the increase of age. there is a significant decrease in the CT number of parotid gland(p<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in CT number between sexes except the 7th decade and beyond age group of parotid gland(p>0.05). Conclusion : As age increases, CT number of parotid gland has a tendency to decrease, and there is no significant difference in the CT numbers between left and right parotid gland. Therefore in the CT scan of patients suspected of having a salivary gland disease of the parotid gland. to consider normal range of the age-dependent CT numbers of parotid gland and compare the CT numbers of the right and left parotid gland might be useful in diagnosing the disease.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the actual status regarding the size selection for jackets, skirts, and slacks among the ready-to-wears worn by adult women, and to examine the physical measurements of major parts for the women wearing each dress size. The data collection was made through the questionnaires obtained from 699 adult women of 20 to 59 years of age. The questionnaire is composed of the sizes of ready-to-wears worn and physical measurements of the respondents. The data analysis was conducted through description statistics, Crosstabs, ANOVA. The findings are as follows. 1. The differences were found in the sizes of ready-to-wears worn by adult women along the age ranges. 2. The ratios of correspondence for the sizes of jackets and skirts and for the sizes of jackets and slacks were as high as 77.3% and 78.3%, respectively. 3. The differences were found in every physical measurement item of the jacket wearers by the size. The girth items showed an increase with the larger sizes of jackets, whereas the height was the largest for the wearers of Sizes 55 and 66, regardless of the jacket sizes. The differences in the physical measurements by the age range, among the jacket wearers of the same size, were found in the height and the waist girth. The height was lower and the waist girth was larger, with the older age. In addition, the differences in the wearers' physical measurements, by the jacket size of the same age range, were found in every item including the height among those in their 20's, and in every item excluding the height among those in their 30's or the above.

  • Rheumatoid arthritis as one of the chronic illness requiring management in long period of time puts great burden to patients, their family and society. For patients with chronic illnesses, providing a social support is important and the most important source comes from spouses. Therefore we assessed burden of husbands of female rheumatoid arthritic patients and also found out the factors affecting burden. The sample of study was 107 female rheumatoid arthritic patients and their spouses. The tool of assessing spouses' burden was the revised version of subjective and objective parameters developed by Montgomery et al.(1985). The results are as follows: 1. General characteristics of patients and spouses: The mean age of the patients was 48 years. Educational level of patients was high school 41.1%. The mean age of the spouses was 51years. Educational level of spouses was mostly high school(40.2%) and college(29.9%) graduate. The mean marital period was 23.4years. Average income per month was 1,609,000 won. The average duration since diagnosis was 9.4years. As a therapy, 67.3% chose standard drug therapy. Average rating of discomfort by patient was 3.05(range 1-5) and that of severity was 3.48 and that of dependency was 2.58. The husband's rating of their spouses disease severity was 3.68. 2. Husbands' burden: The average burden in subjective items was 21.61(range 6-36) and objective items was 35.24(range 10-60). The average of total burden was 56.59(range 16-96). 3. Husband's total burden correlated with patient's age, educational level of patients, therapy method, patient's level of discomfort, patient's severity, patient's level of dependence, husband's recognition of level of severity in statistical level. Husband's objective burden correlated with patient's age, educational level of patient, patient's level of discomfort, husband's recognition of level of severity. Husband's subjective burden correlated with patient's age, educational level of patients, therapy method, patient's severity, patient's level of dependence, husband's recognition of level of severity. 4. Linear correlation analysis on burden: The husbands' total burden is explained in 37 7% by husband's recognition of level of severity and husband's age. The husbands' objective burden is explained in 31.2% by patient's level of dependence, husband's age, husband's recognition of level of severity. The husbands' subjective burden is explained in 26.7% by husband's recognition of level of severity and patient's age. In conclusion, husbands' level of burden is affected by many factors and therefore nursing strategy for relieving burden of middle aged husbands should be individualized taking these factors into consideration.
