  • Due to the great impact of private education expenses on many areas including economics and politics, reducing private education expenses is one of the key issues in Korea. In this paper, we analyze the data from a survey on private education expenses, conducted by Statistics, Korea, in 2008. We study the effect of some demographic variables on two dependent variables, the expenses for out-of-school private education (Private) and the expenses for after-school programs (Afterschool), by using a multiple linear regression model. The analysis results show that 'residential area' and 'school level' variables have a significant effect on the two dependent variables. 'Private' increases in the order of small town, middle town, or metropolitan city, and Seoul, by about 7%. On the other hand, 'Afterschool' are about the same for all areas except for the small town. In terms of the effect of 'school level', 'Private' for high school students is about 17% larger than all other students including professional high school students. This shows a strong correlation between university admission and private education, in Korea. 'Afterschool' is larger for high school and elementary school students and decreases in the order of professional school students and middle school students. It seems that after-school programs are alternatives to expensive private education programs for elementary school students, and that high school students are attracted to after-school programs to get a good GPA, which is important for university admissions.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify whether there were significant differences in the levels and relationships of emotional intelligence, school adaptation, self-resilience, positive human relationships, and depression between elementary school students who participated in after-school music activities and those who did not. The participants of this study were 379 fourth, fifth, and sixth grade elementary school students in the Capital Area and Gyeongnam Province participated in after-school music activities and 368 students who did not, totaling 747 students. For research analysis, t-test and multi-group analysis were performed, and the analyzed results are as follows. First, the level of emotional intelligence, self-resilience, positive human relationships, and school adaptation were higher in the participating group and the level of depression was lower than the group that did not participate. Second, as a result of multiple group analysis, the participating group had stronger influences on the paths of [emotional intelligence→self-resilience], [emotional intelligence→positive human relationship], [emotional intelligence→depression], [emotional intelligence→school adaptation], and [self-resilience→school adaptation] than those of non-participating group. Third, the participating group showed mediating effects from self-resilience, positive human relationships, and depression in the relationship between emotional intelligence and school adaptation. On the other hand, the non-participating group manifested significant mediating effects only from self-resilience and depression variables in the relationship between emotional intelligence and school adaptation.

  • This study investigated whether orthodontic force influences the production of osteoprotegerin (OPG) and receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand (RANKL) in vivo, both of which are affected by cortical activation. Mechanical force was applied to the maxillary premolars of orthodontic patients by fitting the transpalatal arch prior to cortical activation of the gingival tissue. Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) samples were then collected from each patient using paper strips before and after 1, 3, 7 or 14 days of treatment. The OPG and RANKL levels in the GCF were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. The levels of OPG were significantly increased after 1 day of fitting the appliance and decreased to basal levels at 3 days after fitting. In contrast, the RANKL levels were dramatically decreased at 1 day after fitting, but recovered to those of the untreated control at 3 days after the force application. The force-mediated changes in the OPG and RANKL levels of the GCF were unaffected by cortical activation during these experimental periods. Collectively, these results suggest that an acute and severe change between the OPG and RANKL levels plays an important role in stimulating the cellular responses required for alveolar bone remodeling by orthodontic treatment.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of flipped learning in ASP(after school program) on self-directed learning ability and learning motivation. This study used a one group pre test-post test design. Data derived from 35 person nursing students enrolled in after-school program between 17 December 2018 and 18 January 2019 at D university. The learner's self-directed learning ability increased, statistically differed differences(t=-4.04, p<.001) but, motivation increased there were no statistically significant differences(t=-1.08, p=.288). The average of ASP satisfaction scores for the program was 3.49 ± 0.93. Therefore, it is suggested that educators and schools organize their flipped learning methods in the curriculum to improve learners' self-directed learning ability.

  • The auricular cartilage grafts have been widely used in replacement of the temporomandibular joint disk. Cartilage grafts itself have a low metabolism and high survival rate after grafting. In processing the grafting materials, it was important to preserve the properties of chondrocyte proper. We used 15% glycerol and 10% DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) solutions for cartilage fixation before deep freezing. We have performed the allogenic auricular cartilage graft in the temporomandibular joint of 20 rabbits which 10 specimen was treated with 15% glycerol and the other 10 specimen was treated with 10% DMSO respectively and examined in 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks after operation histopathologically. The result were : 1. Inflammatory cell infiltration around the grafted material appeared more glycerol groups than DMSO groups at 1 week, but each group has no differences after 2 weeks. 2. Degenerative changes of grafted auricular chondrocytes were more deveolped in glycerol group than DMSO groups till 4 weeks, but there were no differences between two groups after 6 weeks. 3. Fibrous union between grafted fragment and mandibular condyle was prominent in DMSO group. 4. Vascular proliferation of the grafted auricualr cartilage was more developed in DMSO groups than glycerol group in early stage. 5. Amount of the additional growth of grafted auricular cartilage was more existed in DMSO groups than glycerol group. 6. General survival rate after grafting was more prominent in DMSO group. In summary, allogenic auricular cartilage grafts treated with 15% glycerol and 10% DMSO solution have supported to survivalbility as a cryopreservative agents, especially DMSO groups have little inflammatory cell infiltration in early stages and degenerative changes and additional growth are more prominent than glycerol groups.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the post-operative skeletal stability after surgical correction of patients with mandibular prognathism by bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) and to evaluate the horizontal relapse tendency after the surgery. Methods: Twenty-six patients with Class III dental and skeletal malocclusion were selected for this retrospective study. Fifteen of them underwent BSSRO for mandibular setback and eleven of them underwent two-jaw surgery (Lefort I and BSSRO). In each patient, lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken pre-operatively, post-operatively within 1 week, and post-operatively after eight months. After tracing of the cephalometric radiographs, various parameters were measured. The analyses were done by linear measurement to evaluate the change in position of hard tissue B point, pogonion and mandibular plan angle by examination on lateral cephalograms. Results: The horizontal relapse rate was 27.1% at B point and 31.6% at pogonion in patients who underwent BSSRO. The horizontal relapse rate of the group where the amount of correction exceeded 10 mm was 25.69% at B point. Conclusion: There were no statistical differences on the magnitude of setback and direction of rotation of the mandible in mandibular stability. There were also no statistical differences between single mandibular surgery and two-jaw surgery for mandibular stability.

  • Objective: The goal of this study is to provide the clinical data of patients with brainstem cavernous hemangiomas after treatment with microsurgery or radiosurgery after conducting a retrospective analysis of 21 patients at one institution. Methods: Twenty one patients with brainstem cavernous hemangiomas were treated at the authors' institution between 1995 and 2004 and clinical analysis was performed by retrospective review of medical records and neuroimaging examinations. Thirteen patients underwent microsurgical resection and radiosurgery was performed as an initial treatment in 9 patients. Results: Radical excision was achieved in 12 among 13 patients and transitory neurological deterioration or new neurological deficit developed during the immediate postoperative period in 7 (54%). The final outcomes at 5 - 70 months after surgery were improved in 11 patients (85%) and worsened in 2 patients (15%) compared with the preoperative state. Radiosurgery was performed in 9 patients. During the follow up period from 5 to 70 months there was neurological improvement in 3 patients, no significant change in 3 and deterioration in 3 patients. Two patients developed rebleeding at 5 months, 60 months respectively after radiosurgery. Conclusion: Microsurgery for symptomatic cavernous hemangioma of brainstem can be performed with acceptable morbidity. Fatal complication is rare with careful selection of the optimal operative approach in well selected patients. Radiosurgery is an effective alternative for the lesions which are not accessible by surgical approach, however, there is still a possibility of rebleeding over a long period after radiosurgical treatment and microsurgery should be considered as a treatment with priority for the majority of cases.

  • The effects of a nutritional education program for first grade middle school students were evaluated from August to December, 2006. The study subjects were 82 boys and 90 girls, residing in Gwangju, Korea. To assess the effects of the nutritional education program, pre- and post-questionnaires examining nutritional knowledge, dietary attitudes, and dietary habits were developed. Paired t-test and repeated measures ANOVA were used to evaluate the effects of the nutritional education program. In the general subject, the main after-school activities were studying, watching TV, and using computer (85.5%), and sports (9.3%), suggesting their low physical activity. Parents (46.5%) were indicated as the source of nutritional education rather than teachers (13.4%). Twenty-five percent of girl students had diet experience of skipping meals (54.6%), suggesting the need of proper nutritional education for adolescents' health care. In dietary attitudes, both genders showed some improvement of recognition after education. In the changes in dietary habits, both genders had a significant effect on 'three meals a day, eating breakfast, and regular meal' after education. After education, the rate of having breakfast everyday increased from 52.4% to 65.9% for boys and from 33.3%to 57.8% for girls. In the changes in nutritional knowledge, the appreciation of the importance of school meals increased in both genders from 50.6% to 80.8% after education. The nutritional knowledge, scores of regular eating and well-mannered eating increased in both genders regardless of the students' characteristics. The study results revealed that this education provided an important motivation to improve basic nutritional knowledge and dietary habit. It is recommended to develop systematic and various educational programs and learning materials tailored to subjects before nutritional education.

  • Objectives:There are various reports for incidence and risk factors of hypothyroidism after hemithyroidectomy for benign thyroid disease. The reported incidence rate varies from 5.0 to 41.9%. Moreover, there are few reports about this in Korea. So, our objective is to identify the incidence and possible factors contributing to hypothyroidism after hemithyroidectomy in Korea. Subjectives and Methods:We reviewed medical records of patients who underwent hemithyroidectomy between 1999 and 2007 years. We enrolled 80 patients. The incidence of postoperative hypothyroidism was based on thyrotropin values and clinical symptoms. And all patients were evaluated for age, gender, serum thyrotropin(TSH) levels, serum free T4, weight of resected thyroid tissue and associated thyroiditis. Results:Nine of 80 patients(11.3%) became biochemically hypothyroid postoperatively. Six of 9 hypothyroid patients were diagnosed within 2 months of operation. The mean preoperative TSH level was $2.12{\pm}0.96mIU/L$ in hypothyroid and significantly different from $1.33{\pm}0.77mIU/L$ in euthyroid patients(p<0.05). There were no significant differences in age, gender, weight of resected thyroid tissue, preoperative free T4 and associated thyroiditis. Conclusion:A minority of patients became hypothyroid after hemithyroidectomy. Hypothyroidism following hemithyroidectomy occurred in patients with higher preoperative TSH levels.. The screening test for postoperative hypothyroidism should be performed from month to year after operation.
