A Study on the Modeling of Transient Response in Automated Manual Transmission for Hybrid Trucks

  • Modern transmission technologies such as automated manual transmission(AMT) and dual clutch transmission(DCT) are interested to all manufactures due to their fuel efficiency and driver's convenience, especially in a hybrid system. AMT has advantages in that they have a high efficiency of manual transmissions(MT) and offer operation convenience similar to automatic transmissions(AT), but it has some disadvantages in that they have torque gap during gear shift and shift time. To reduce disadvantages, it is necessary to evaluate errors and characteristics as a developing simulation model before experimental verification. The purpose of this study is to develop virtual components and simulate the transient response of AMT. A dynamic AMT model and a control logic for an integrated vehicle model have been developed using Matlab/Simulink as a simulation platform. In this paper, the clutch model to describe the stick-slip transition mode and the transmission model to describe the neutral gear shifting is introduced and compared with each other.

  • Microscopic defects within the microstructure of hardened cement paste are the main source of weakness in concrete. As a solution, nano-graphene oxide (GO) can be employed to improve the cement paste microstructure. However, there is a number of disadvantages, e.g., fluidity reduction and non-uniform dispersion. The present study sought to modify GO by fabricating a copolymer (PSGO) in a novel process to exploit the advantages of nano-GO while minimizing its disadvantages. Using 0.03wt% copolymerled to 38.8% higher tensile strength, 29.3% higher compressive strength and 25% higher workability. The SEM images revealed that GO and modified GO enhanced concrete by secondary hydration and bonding with C-S-H, creating a firm, integrated, and foil-like structure, and reducing the crack size and depth.

  • Friction materials with three different formulations containing different solid lubricants were investigated to study the role of lubricants on the friction performance. The three friction materials contained graphite 10 vol.%, graphite 7 vol.%+$MoS_2$ 3 vol.%, and graphite 7 vol.%+$Sb_2S_3$ 3 vol.%, respectively, with the same amount of other ingredients. Results of this work showed that each formulation with different lubricants had unique advantages and disadvantages. The friction materials containing graphite 7 vol.%+$MoS_2$ 3 vol.% and graphite 7 vol.%+$Sb_2S_3$ 3 vol.% showed better resistance to fading and improved friction stability compared to the friction materials containing graphite only as a lubricant. However, the friction materials with two lubricants (graphite+$MoS_2$ or $Sb_2S_3$) showed disadvantages on DTV generation and rotor wear.

  • In this paper, an overview on the ordering sphere decoder (SD) class for space-time codes (STC) will be presented. In SDs, the ordering techniques are considered as promising methods for reducing complexity by exploiting a sorted list of candidates, thus decreasing the number of tested points. First, we will present the current state of art of SD with their advantages and disadvantages. Then, the overview of simply geometrical approaches for ordering is presented to address the question to overcome the disadvantages. The computer simulation results shown that, thanks to the aid of ordering, the ordering SDs can achieve optimal bit-error-rate (BER) performance while requiring the very low complexity, which is comparable to that of linear sub-optimal decoders.

Privacy-Aware Adaptable Web Services Using Petri Nets

  • Many researchers have developed frameworks that are capable of handling context information and can be adapted and used by any Web service. However, no research involving the systematic analysis of existing frameworks has yet been conducted. This paper examines the Context Framework, an example of existing frameworks, using a Petri net, and analyzes its advantages and disadvantages. Then, a Petri net model - with its disadvantages removed - is introduced, and a new framework is presented on the basis of that model. The proposed PAWS (Privacy Aware Web Services) framework has a expendability for context management and communicates flexible context information for every session. The proposed framework can solve overhead problems of context in SOAP messages. It also protects user privacy according to user preferences.

  • According to the recent epidemiological data, the numbers of patients of Reumatoid Arthritis(RA) in the world are reported to be 350mi11ion and 700,000 in the world and in Japan, respectively For the treatment of RA, NASIDs as the first choice drug have been widely used worldwide, and more than 50 NSAIDs have been in market up to today in Japan. Early 1990s, DMARDs as the new drug for RA treatment came into market, and the number of DMARDs has been increased every year. These drugs are recognized to have several advantages in treatment of RA, however, disadvantages are also reported, i.e., (1) high incidence of side effects, (2) high non-responder population, (3) decreased efficacy in chronic treatment, and (4) slow starting of the efficacy. For example, Methotrexate which has been widely used as the immunosuppressant has been recently used for treatment of Reumatoid. However, this drug has several disadvantages such as 60-70% improvement of the disease, 80% incidence of side effects, and 2-4 weeks to recognize the efficacy after treatment. The Logic of Vertical Density: Tall Buildings in the 21st Century City

  • This paper attempts to summarize recent debates on tall buildings. It first explains the driving forces of constructing tall buildings including population increase, rural-to-urban migration, demographic change, agglomeration, and human aspiration. Next, it discusses disadvantages and challenging factors that are frequently raised in making a case against tall buildings including economics, environmental factors, historic context, public safety, and psychological issues. The paper concludes by affirming that tall buildings will persist in the $21^{st}$ century due to strong commitment to urban sustainability and significant population increase worldwide.

A Novel Metal Supported SOFC Fabrication Method Developed in KAIST: a Sinter-Joining Method

  • Metal-supported SOFCs have been investigated to overcome the disadvantages of ceramic-supported SOFCs, including issues related to mechanical strength and sealing. In the case of ceramic-supported cells, the mechanical support is a brittle ceramic or cermet, and it contains expensive materials. However, metal-supported cells utilize ceramic layers that are only as thick as necessary for electrochemical functioning, thereby compensating for the disadvantages of ceramic-supported cells. The mechanical support is fabricated from inexpensive and robust metals, and the electrochemically active layers are applied directly to the metal support. The metal-supported SOFCs thus can provide a reduced system cost, ease of manufacturing, and operational advantages. Owing to these features, metal-supported SOFCs are a very promising candidate for commercialization. Given the importance of studying worldwide trends in metal-supported SOFC research for performance evaluation, this paper reviews development trends with a focus on fabrication methods. Furthermore, a novel fabrication method developed in KAIST is discussed.

  • Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is surgery of the chest, abdomen, spine and pelvis, done with the aid of a viewing scope, and specially designed instruments. Benefits of minimally invasive surgery are less pain, less need for post-surgical pain medication, less scarring and less likelihood for incisional complications. Since the late 1980's, minimally invasive surgery has gained widespread acceptance because of the such advantages. However there are significant disadvantages which have, to date, limited the applications for these promising techniques. The reasons are limited degree-of-freedom, reduced dexterity and the lack of tactile feeling. To overcome such disadvantages many researchers have endeavored to develop robotic systems. Even though some robot aided systems achieved success and commercialized, there still remain many thing to be improved. In this paper, the robotic system which can mimic whole motions of a human arm by adding additional DOF is presented. The suggested design is expected to provide surgeons with improved dexterity during minimally invasive surgery.
