  • A protein based vision biomembrane was fabricated by adsorbing bacteriorhodopsin into electrochemically polymerized polypyrrole film substrate mainly through strong electrostatic interaction. The immobilized bacteriorhodopsin on the polypyrrole film was demonstrated by SEM and SRET. The light signal transducing function from the bacteriorhodopsin which was adsorbed into Polypyrrole film was evaluated by electroretinogram(ERG). A wave form analysis of the electroretinogram indicated that the adsorbed bacteriorhodopsin retained its activity and light signal was obtained from the protein for at least one month.

  • We studied the H/D exchange kinetics of pure and acid dopped water-ice film by using the techniques of reactive ions scattering (RIS) and low energy sputtering (LES) with low kinetic energy cesium ion beam (<35 eV). From RIS, neutral water isotopomers were detected in the form of cesium-molecule ion clusters, $CsX^+$ (X= $H_2O$, HDO, $D_2O$). Ionic species, like $H_3O^+$, $DH_2O^+$, $D_2HO^+$, $D_3O^+$, adsorbed on the surface were ejected via LES process. Those techniques allowed us to trace the isotopomeric populations of water-ice film. To show the catalytic effect of excess proton in the H/D exchange reaction, our study was conducted with two types of water-ice films. In film 1, about 0.5 BL of $H_2O$ was adsorbed on HCl (0.1 ML) dopped $D_2O$ (8 BL) film. In film 2, similar amount of $H_2O$ used in film 1 was adsorbed on pure $D_2O$ film. Kinetic data were obtained from each film type for 90-110 K (film 1) and 110-130 K (film 2) and fitted with numerically integrated lines. Through the Arrhenius plot of kinetic coefficient deduced from fitting of the H/D exchange reaction, the activation energy of film 1 and 2 were estimated to be $10{\pm}3kJmol^{-1}$ and $17{\pm}4kJmol^{-1}$. This activation barrier difference could be understood from detailed pictures of H/D exchange. In film 2, both the formation of ion pair, $H_3O^+$ and OH. and proton transfer were needed for the H/D exchange. However, in film 1, only proton transfer was necessary but ion pair formation was not, so this might reduce the activation energy.

  • The influence of electric field on CO adsorbed on Pt(111) was investigated with reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) in ultrahigh vacuum system. The ice film capacitor method was used to apply electric field to the amorphous ice film with CO on Pt(111). Two systems were compared by measuring the change of the CO stretching vibrational mode under applied electric field; one is CO on Pt(111), and the other is CO buried inside an ice film on Pt(111). By comparing them, we were able to calculate the additional effect of adsorption of CO on Pt(111) on peak shift. The CO adsorbed on Pt(111) has shown larger peak shift than CO adsorbed with H2O when we applied stronger electric field. Additionally, the differences were observable when the applied electric field exceeds $1{\times}10V/m^8$.

  • Two types of formaldehyde-treated soy protein isolate (SPI) films, formaldehyde-incorporated and formaldehyde-adsorbed films, and control SPI films were prepared. Cross-linking effect of formaldehyde on selected film properties such as color, tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (E), water vapor permeability (WVP), and water solubility (WS) were determined. Physical properties of formaldehyde-incorporated films were not geneally different from those of control films, while almost all of those among formaldehyde-adsorbed films were significantly different. Through cross-linking development within formaldehyde-adsorbed films, WS decreased significantly (P<0.05) from 26.1% to 16.6%, and TS increased two times while E decreased two times compared with control films. This was caused by insolubilization and hardening of protein by cross-linking most likely attributed to the significant changes in properties of protein films reacted with formaldehyde.

  • The maintenance of condenser main pipe is the key to achieve film-forming amine maintenance effectiveness. In this work, oxygen content, pH and temperature of the solution were controlled to simulate the condition of condenser main pipe, and magnetite coated carbon steel sample was prepared by pre-oxidization. CAM was used to characterize the hydrophobicity of film formed samples. Hydrophobic film was formed on pre-oxidized carbon steel samples when octadecylamine concentration reaches 20 mg/kg. SEM, EDS, EIS, and PD were used to characterize the influence of octadecylamine concentration on maintenance effectiveness. It was found that the maintenance effectiveness was enhanced and the corrosion rate was suppressed with the increase of octadecylamine concentration. FIB and TEM were used to detect the adsorbed octadecylamine film thickness founding that octadecylamine adsorbed onto the surface of pre-oxidized carbon steel by multi-layer adsorption mechanism.

  • The electronic and magnetic properties for Mn-adsorbed on the chalcopyrite (CH) AlGaP2 semiconductor are investigated by using first-principles FPLMTO method. The clean CH-AlGaP2 without adsorbed Mn is a p-type semiconductor with a direct band-gap. The Mn-adsorbed CH-AlGaP2 exhibits the ferromagnetic state. It is more energetically stable than the other magnetic ones. The interstitial site on P-terminated surface is more energetically favorable one than the Al/Ga-terminated surface, or the other adsorbing sites. In the case of Mn-adsorbed Al/Ga-terminated surface, it is induced a strong coupling between Mn-3d and neighboring P-3p electrons. The holes of partially unoccupied minority Mn-3d state and majority (or minority) Al-3p or P-3p state are induced. Thus a high magnetic moment of Mn is sustained by holes-mediated double-exchange coupling. It is noticeable that the semiconducting and half-metallic characteristics of CH-AlGaP2:Mn thin film is disappeared.

  • The effects of sub-ppm levels of $H_2S$ and the adsorbed water on the atmospheric corrosion of silver were studied with In situ weight balance to study the effect of the adsorbed water on the kinetic behavior and to determine the rate-controlling step, with XPS to analyze the tarnish film, and with calculation of phase equilibrium to predict the stable solid phase, the concentrations of dissolved species ($Ag^-$, $H^+$, $S^{2-}$, $HS^-$) and the equilibrium potentials ($E_{Ag^+/Ag}$, $E_{H^+/H_2}$, $E_{O_2/O^{2-}$). The results of weight measurements showed that oxygen was required for the sulfidation of silver in 100 ppb $H_2S$ and humidified environments enhanced the tarnished rate and oxidizing power. In addition, the rate determining step for tarnishing silver was shown to be changed to transport though the tarnish film.

  • On the surface of mesoporous silica thin films (MSTF) which were fabricated by sol-gel approach there are existences of water and three different silanol types including chained, germinal and isolated silanol. Their amounts changes as a function of aging time of used sol solution, as confirmed by FT-IR. The adsorbed water generates ionic carriers such as H+ and OH- and passivates the Si dangling bonds at the interface of silicon wafer-MSTF. The ionic carriers can not only transport across the thickness of thin film to enhance the leakage current but also diffuse toward the silicon wafer-MSTF interface to depassivate Si dangling bonds. On the other hand, chained silanols or germinal silanols promote the moisture adsorption of MSTF and tend to form strongly hydrogen bonded systems with adsorbed water molecules resulting in very high dielectric constant. Isolated silanol, on the contrary, affects less on electrical properties of thin film.

  • The thickness of adsorbed molecular layers is the most critical factor in studying thin-film lubrication, and it is the most essential parameter that distinguishes thin-film from thick-film lubrication analysis. The thin film between the shaft and bearing surface within a very narrow gap was considered. The general Reynolds equation has been derived for calculating thin-film lubrication parameters affecting the performance of the circular journal bearing. Investigation of the load-carrying capacity and pressure distribution for the journal bearing considering the adsorbed layer thickness has been carried out. A Reynolds equation appropriate for the journal bearing is used in this paper for the analysis, and it is discussed using the finite difference method of the central difference scheme. The parameters, such as eccentricity and attitude angle, are used for discussing the load-carrying capacity of the journal bearing. The results reported in this paper should be applied to analysis of the journal bearing with different lubrication factors. The steady-state analysis of the journal bearing is conducted using the Reynolds model under thin-film lubrication conditions. For a journal bearing, several parameters, such as a pressure, load capacity, and pressure components of the bearing can be obtained, and these results can be stored in a sequential data file for later analysis. Finally, their distribution can be displayed and analyzed easily by using the MATLAB GUI technique. The load-carrying capability of the journal bearing is observed for the specified operating conditions. This work could be helpful for the understanding and research of the mechanism of thin-film lubrication.

  • Protein A molecular thin film was fabricated as a platform of antibody-based biosensor. For the immobilization of the protein A thin film, a viologen multilayer was built up using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique, and then, protein A was adsorbed on the viologen LB film by an electrostatic interaction force, which was formed as a hetero-film structure. For the deposition of viologen, surface pressure area ($\pi$-A) isotherm was investigated. The fabricated protein A-viologen hetero LB film was investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Using the developed molecular film, antibody immobilization and fluorescence measurement was carried out.
