Purpose: This study was to assess the association of internet addiction and depression, stress and suicidal ideation among adolescents. Methods: The authors have surveyed 2 middle schools and 2 high schools located in Seoul and analyzed 525 questionnaires. The questionnaire included the Internet Addiction Self Diagnosis Index (K-index), Child Depression Index (CDI), Stress Index and Reynold's Suicidal Ideation Index. Structural equational model analysis was done to explore the association between internet addiction and suicidal ideation. Results: The adolescent internet addiction groups were classified as the high risk group 12 (2.3%), the potential risk group 64 (12.2%) and the normal group 449 (85.5%). When classified according to sex, the high risk group is consisted of 8 (3.9%) boys, 4 (1.3%) girls and the potential risk group is consisted of 41 (64.1%) boys and 23 (35.9%) girls which leads to the conclusion that boys are relatively more addicted compared with girls. The group with more addiction showed higher depression scores, stress scores and suicidal ideation scores. The correlation analysis showed the significant relations between internet addiction and depression (r=0.263), stress (r=0.265) and suicidal ideation (r=0.284). According to the structural equation model analysis, internet addiction had direct effects on the depression and indirect effects on suicidal ideation. Stress had the significant direct effects on both internet addiction and depression. Depression had a significant direct effect on suicidal ideation. Conclusion: Internet addiction affects directly and indirectly an depression and suicidal ideation among adolescent.

Objectives: Suicide is the leading cause of death among adolescents in South Korea, and depression and personality profiles have been identified as significant risk factors for self-injurious behavior. This study examined the influence of depressive mood and temperament/character on self-injury in adolescents. Methods: A total of 116 adolescents (aged 12-18 years) with a primary diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD) and their parents were enrolled in this study. The participants were divided into three groups based on adolescent's self-injury frequency, and their Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), Youth Self-Report (YSR), and Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) scores were compared. Finally, mediation analysis was conducted to investigate the relationship between suicidal ideation and self-injury. Results: Of study participants, 75.9% answered that they had suicidal ideation, and 55.2% answered that they had engaged in self-injurious behavior in the last six months. There were significant differences in CDI and suicidal ideation among the groups. After adjusting for age and sex, mediation analysis indicated that depressive mood mediated the relationship between suicidal ideation and self-injury. Conclusion: This study emphasizes the importance of evaluating and managing depressive mood severity in adolescents with MDD as these factors partially mediate the transition from suicidal ideation to self-injury.
Suicide is the leading cause of death among Korean adolescents. There is a growing interest in the role of loneliness as a risk factor for suicide ideation and depressive symptoms. However, little is known in the Korean context. This study analyzed a total of 109,796 respondents from the Korea Youth Health Behavior Survey in 2020 and 2021. Multiple logistic regression models were implemented to test the association between loneliness and either of suicidal ideation and depressive mood. Covariates included demographic characteristics, school enrolled, household income, living arrangement, self-rated health, and the number of times treated for violence. Adjusted odd ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were computed. 12.0% of adolescents reported to have felt lonely frequently and 3.0% always. 11.8% and 26.0% had suicidal ideation and depressive mood, respectively. The prevalence of suicidal ideation was higher in the always-lonely adolescents (52.6%) than in the frequently-lonely adolescents (35.1%). The always-lonely adolescents were nearly 30 times more likely to have suicidal ideation (OR=30.7; 95% CI, 27.1 - 34.8) and to feel depressed (OR=32.5; 95% CI, 29.2 - 36.4) than adolescents who felt never lonely. In conclusion, Loneliness was a major risk factor for suicidal ideation and depressive mood among Korean adolescents. Monitoring and addressing the condition of loneliness may help reduce suicidal ideation and depressive mood.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a core competency support program on depression and suicidal ideation in adolescents. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was employed in this study. Participants for the study were high school students, 27 in the experimental group and 29 in the control group. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN. 14.0 program with $\chi^2$ test, t-test, and ANCOVA. Results: Participants in the core competency support program reported decreased depression scores significantly different from those in the control group. Participants in the core competency support program reported decreased suicidal ideation scores, also significantly different from those in the control group. Conclusion: The core competency support program was effective in decreasing depression and suicidal ideation for adolescents. Therefore, this approach is recommended as a suicide prevention strategy for adolescents.
Purpose: This study was done to compare families of boys or of girls for actor and partner effect of stress, depression and parent-adolescent communication as perceived by mother, father and adolescent on adolescents' suicidal ideation. Methods: Participants were 183 families (104 boys' families, 79 girls' families) who met eligibility criteria. All measures were self-administered. Data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 program. Results: In boys' families, boys' depression and communication with father showed actor effect on boys' suicidal ideation. Boys' stress showed indirect effect on boys' suicidal ideation through communication with father and boys' depression. Mothers' depression showed indirect partner effect on boys' suicidal ideation through boys' depression. In families of girls, girls' depression and stress showed actor effects on girls' suicidal ideation. Girls' communication with mother showed indirect effects through girls' depression. Also girls' stress showed indirect effect through girls' depression. Stress in mothers and/or fathers showed partner effect on girls' suicidal ideation. Conclusion: To intervene in adolescents' suicidal ideation and promote adolescents' mental health, programs should be developed differently according to gender and based on parent's psychological states.
Purpose: This study was to compare the health behaviors and factors influencing on suicidal ideation according to the gender among adolescents with asthma and to examine the relationship between them. Methods: The data was obtained from the 2014 youth's risk behavior web-based study in South Korea. The data were analyzed with the SPSS/Win 21.0 program, using descriptive statistics, $x^2$ test and multiple logistic regression. Results: As the result of multiple logistic regression, the factors of health behaviors and risk related to suicidal ideation were subjective happiness, stress, depression, drug use, treatment experience due to violence in both male and female. In female, physical activity and alcohol drinking were factors related to suicidal ideation. Conclusion: Therefore, we have to develop suicide prevention program, to decrease the suicidal ideation of adolescents considering such differences by gender differences.
This study aims to identify the significance of adolescent suicidal ideation in a multicultural family, propose suicidal prevention strategies, and provide considerable foundations supporting their secured future. The research results are in the follow. For the results of main factors of relative influence on the suicidal ideation, the relative dangerousness levels were 5.5 times more likely to experience with drugs, 4.5 times more likely to have depressive symptoms, 3.2 times more likely to experience violence at school, and 2.8 times more likely to experience drinking alcohol, 1.4 times more likely to feel unhappiness and 1.3 times more likely to be bad off in economic status, all of which contribute to suicidal ideation. All results turned out to be statistically significant. Therefore, the findings and results of this study indicate that appropriate and practical prevention strategies to address the suicidal behavior of adolescents in a multicultural family need to be carefully considered and designed in a most urgent manner.

This study examined the fitness of a structural model on the relationship among biological risk disposition, sociocultural risk factors, self-control, social support, and suicidal ideation for woman adolescents. Data were collected from December 3, 2012 to March 28, 2013 by questionnaires from 343 middle and high school students in the D metropolitan city. The data was analyzed by the SPSS and AMOS programs. Biological risk disposition, sociocultural risk factors, self-control, and social support showed a direct effect on suicidal ideation for woman adolescents, while biological risk disposition and sociocultural risk factors showed an indirect effect on suicidal ideation for woman adolescents. Biological risk disposition and sociocultural risk factors showed a direct effect on self-control and social support for woman adolescents. Based on the outcomes of this study, it is necessary to design an intervention program that emphasizes the reducement of biological risk disposition, sociocultural risk factors and enhancement self-control and social support in order to prevention woman adolescents' suicidal ideation.
This study investigates suicidal ideation and its associated factors by sex in adolescents, focusing health behaviors and health status. For this study, data of 931 adolescents(11-18years) from the Fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES V-1, 2010) were analyzed. Those who had activity limitation, depression, less exercise showed higher suicidal ideation. For male adolescents, those who were high school student compared with middle school showed lower suicidal ideation and had depression showed higher suicidal ideation. On the other hand, the risk factors of suicidal ideation for female adolescents were activity limitation, smoking experience, depression, less exercise. The development of suicide prevention program for adolescents requires different approaches for each sex.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the combined influence of screen based sedentary behavior and sleep duration on obesity, depression, and suicidal ideation in Korean Adolescents. Methods: This cross sectional study used secondary data from the 2013 Adolescent Health Behavior Online Survey. A total of 27,929 high school students were included in the study. Logistic regression was used for analysis of the combined influence of screen based sedentary behavior and sleep duration on obesity, depression, and suicidal ideation. Results: Obesity was more prevalent among adolescents who had ${\geq}$ 4h of screen based sedentary behavior and <7h of sleep duration compared to the reference group, defined as < 2h of screen time and > 7h of sleep duration. Depression and suicidal ideation were more prevalent among adolescents who had 2-4h of screen based sedentary behavior and <7h of sleep duration compared to the reference group. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, maintaining a low (< 2h) level of screen based sedentary behavior and appropriate sleep duration over 7 hours per day is essential for prevention of adolescent obesity, depression, and suicidal ideation.
