  • Under frequency load shedding (UFLS) is an effective way to prevent system blackout after a serious disturbance occurs in a power system. A novel centralized adaptive under frequency load shedding (AUFLS) scheme using the synchronous phase measurement unit (PMU) is proposed in this paper. Two main stages are consisted of in the developed technique. In the first stage, the active power deficit is estimated by using the simplest expression of the generator swing equation and static load model since the frequency, voltages and their rate of change can be obtained by means of measurements in real-time from various devices such as phase measurement units. In the second stage, the UFLS schemes are adapted to the estimated magnitude based on the presented model. The effectiveness of the proposed AUFLS scheme is investigated simulating different disturbance in IEEE 10-generator 39-bus New England test system.

  • Material functions about effective stress, permeability, coefficient of consolidation and coefficient of volume change has important role to predict consolidation velocity and settlement of soft ground. Modified oedometer for radial drainage is adapted to find out material functions on laboratory tests. Undisturbed sample for laboratory tests were taken from construction sites of industrial complexes on southern coastal area which consists of upper dredged fill and lower original clay layer. For different drainage condition in consolidation process void ratio, effective stress, permeability, coefficient of consolidation and coefficient of volume change has been assessed with results of existing standard oedometer tests. It is worthwhile to note that consolidation material functions could be expressed as regression equation by Stark (2005), heterogeneity for permeability could be assessed from these relationships.

  • The vehicle-bridge interaction (VBI) analysis might be cumbersome and computationally expensive in bridge engineering due to the necessity of solving large number of coupled system of equations. However, VBI analysis can provide valuable insights into the dynamic behavior of highway bridges under specific loading conditions. Hence, this paper presents a numerical study on the dynamic behavior of a conventional highway bridge under strong near-field and far-field earthquake motions considering the VBI effects. A recursive substructuring method, which enables solving bridge and vehicle equations of motion separately and suitable to be adapted to general purpose finite element softwares, was used. A thorough analysis that provides valuable information about the effect of various traffic conditions, vehicle velocity, road roughness and effect of soil conditions under far-field and near-field strong earthquake motions has been presented. A real-life concrete highway bridge was chosen for numerical demonstrations. In addition, sprung mass models of vehicles consist of conventional truck and car models were created using physical and dynamic properties adopted from literature. Various scenarios, of which the results may help to highlight the different aspects of the dynamic response of concrete highway bridges under strong earthquakes, have been considered.

  • The bubble model by Keller and Prosperetti is adapted to solve the nonlinear oscillation of a gas bubble. This formulation leads to accurate results since it introduces the energy equation instead of the polytropic assumption for the bubble interior. The numerical method used in this study is stable enough to handle large amplitude of bubble oscillation. The numerical results show some interesting nonlinear phenomena fur the bubble oscillator. The excitation changes the natural frequency of the bubble and makes some harmonic resonances at $f/f_0=1/2, 1/3$ and so on. The natural frequency of a bubble oscillator decreases compared with the linear case result, which means that the nonlinear bubble oscillation system is a "softening"system. In addition, the frequency response curve jumps up or down at a certain frequency. It is also found that there exist multi-valued regions in the frequency response curve depending on the initial conditions of bubble. The dependency of the bubble motion on the initial condition can generate extremely large pressure and temperature which might be the cause of the acoustic cavitation and the sonoluminescence.inescence.

  • Purpose - This study's objective is to confirm the effects of the perceived relationship value, alternative attractiveness, and investment size on Korean food service franchisees' commitment, using an investment model. Among the three factors, the study examines which factors enhance or weaken the commitment in the franchising investment model. Research design, data, methodology - The data were collected from 495 franchisees and analyzed by a SEM (Structure Equation Model) using path analysis by SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0. Results - 1) The perceived relationship value has a positive effect on franchisee commitment. 2) The alternative attractiveness has a negative effect on franchisee commitment. 3) The investment size has a positive effect on franchisee commitment. Conclusions - The findings show that the investment model can be adapted to franchising and confirms previous investment model study results. We can assume that the higher the perceived relationship value and the bigger the investment, the stronger the commitment, and the greater the alternative attractiveness, the weaker the commitment. These results offer managerial implications for a franchisor wanting to strengthen franchisee commitment.

  • This paper examines key determinants and the effect of country-of-origin on customer's purchase intention of functional food and dietary supplement product in Vietnam. Exploratory study was identified to evaluate personal and social factors on customer's buying behavior. Twenty-eight reflective constructs were adapted from literature and designed by using a seven-point Likert scale to facilitate measurement. By using non-probability convenience sampling, data was collected from a survey of 242 Vietnamese who have experienced in buying functional and supplement food. This paper employed partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) as a technique employed to analyze the measurement and structural models. The findings provide evidence that social prestige customer perceives and their positive attitude toward functional food which are main factors influencing on consumers' purchase intention. Customer's perceived prestige plays an important role in decision-making process to purchase. The higher social prestige taken up in consumers' mind, the higher consumers' purchase intention is. Moreover, the more positive attitude customer holds toward functional food, the higher consumers' purchase intention. The research results provide useful information in current understanding of what antecedents determine factors influencing customer's intention to purchase functional food and lead to managerial implications for business strategies.

  • This paper presents vibration control of a CD-ROM(compact disc-read only memory) drive feeding system consisting of a new type of CD-ROM mount using an electro-rheologocal(ER) fluid. Chemically treated starch particles and silicon oil are used for EF fluid, and its field-dependent yield stresses are experimentally distilled under both the shear and the flow modes. On the basis of the yield stress, an appropriate size of ER CD-ROM mount adapted to conventional feeding system is designed and manufactured. Vibration isolation performance of the proposed mount is evaluated in the frequency domain and compared with that of conventional rubber mount. The ER CD-ROM mount is then installed to the drive feeding system and the system equation of motion is derived. The skyhook controller is then incorporated with the fuzzy technique to improve the performance of ER CD-ROM mount. A set of fuzzy parameters and control rules are obtained from a relation between vertical displacement and pitching motion of the feedng system. Followingthe formulation of the fuzzy-skyhook controller, computer simulation is undertaken in order to evaluate vibration suppression of the CD-ROM drive feeding system subjected to various excitations.

  • Automatic swing door for an automotive application is considered. The equation of motion for a driver side swing door is introduced and gravity cancellation control scheme is adapted. The control scheme supposed to cancel the moment due to the tilt of the car. A speed control is suggested for door operation automation but the output of the speed control is not suppose to be precise as for the manufacturing system control. In the frame of the velocity control of the door, feedback linearization was applied for collision detection. The collision detection performance is satisfactory. The estimate of the magnitude of disturbance due to the collision is close to the actual magnitude of disturbance. Simulation study has been performed to gain insight into the system behavior. Also real test on the prototype hardware has been performed for verification purpose.

  • Non-gray radiation with convection in the entrance region of a smooth tube is numerically investigated. The fluid is a mixture of carbon dioxide, water vapor, and nitrogen to simulate combustion products of propane. The flow is assumed to be laminar and hydrodynamically and thermally developing. The P-1 approximation is used to simplify the radiative transfer equation and the exponential wide band model is adapted to model the spectral absorption coefficients of non-gray gas mixture. The bulk mean temperature and Nusselt number variation along the tube axis are shown for several inlet and wall temperature pairs to show the effect of temperature on the heat transfer characteristics. Nusselt numbers for simultaneously developing flow are compared to those for thermally developing flow. In addition, the effect of the mole fraction of the non-gray gases on convective and radiative Nusselt numbers is investigated.
