Principles and mechanism of energy transduction of dielectric polymer materials are well known from the various smart material related publications. However their introduction to industrial actuator applications is limited mainly due to difficulties guarantee controllability and reliability. Most of the previous publications have elaborates energy transduction physics of chunk of polymer while development of construction methods for feasible actuators made of the material is rarely proposed. In the present article, a conceptual design of multi-DOF linear polymer actuator construction that is to be controllable with moderate level of control work os introduced. In addition, numerical models that are developed with a unified energy based approach are presented not only for basic working mechanism analysis of the polymetric soft actuator but for providing analytical foundation to expend the concept toward design of multi-DOF actuator controls.
This article describes a snake robot with 2-DOF actuator modules. The 2-DOF actuator modules make the snake robot move in the 3D space so that the snake robot can cross obstacles and rough terrain. Each 2-DOF actuator module is designed to have high torque output and an embedded controller. A cross bracket connecting the modules is designed be able to support the weight of two actuator modules. The developed snake robot shows 3-D motions such as side winding, standing/monitoring, and can climb in a narrow pipe with high torque modules. The snake robot moves fast with passive wheels in a plane while crossing obstacles.

This paper describes the testing and experimental characterization of a linear permanent magnet actuator, which is designed and developed for active vehicle suspension, under both static and dynamic conditions. Since the active suspension unit operates over a wide force-velocity range with varying duty ratios, it is essential to establish an effective thermal model which can be used for assessing temperature rise of the actuator under various operating conditions. The temperature rise of the actuator is measured and the results are compared with the prediction by the derived transient thermal model. It is shown that the measured actuator parameters and characteristics are closed to their predicted values. The linear actuator is controlled by a dSPACE system via a three phase inverter and its velocity tracking performance is presented.
A new three-dimensional thin shell element for a structure containing an integrated distributed piezoelectric sensor and actuator is Proposed. The assumed strain formulation and the bubble function are introduced to improve the performance of the shell element. A finite element formulation gives a general tool that can predict the static or dynamic responses of the shell with piezoelectric sensor/actuator. The verification through the calculation of the static response for the piezoelectric bimorph beam shows that the results agree with those from the theoretical analysis very well. Dynamic response of a shell shows that the reduction of vibration is possible with the introduction of the piezoelectric shell sensor and actuator. However. the curvature of sensor/actuator is an obstacle for application, since the flexible PVDF is not strong enough and the PZT with curvature should be made specially.
Distributed piezoeletric sensor and actuator have been designed for efficient vibration control of a cantilevered beam. Both PZT and PVDF have been used in this study, the former as an actuator and the latter as a sensor for the integrated structure. We have optimized the position and the size of the PZT actuator and the electrode shape of the PVDF sensor. Finite element method is used to model the structure and the optimized actuators, we have designed the active electrode width of the PVDF sensor along the span of the beam. Actuator design is based on the criterion of minimizing the system energy in the control modes under a given initial condition. Model control forces for the residual (uncontrolled) modes have been minimized during the sensor design to minimize the observation spill-over. Genetic algorithm and sequential quadratic programming technique have been utilized as an optimization scheme. Discrete LQG control law has been applied to the integrated structure for real time vibration control. Performance of the sensor, the actuator, and the integrated smart structure has been demonstrated by experiments.
This paper proposes a simple actuator with a spherical rotor for robot's eyeball, which has two degrees of freedom. It features that both permanent magnets and coils are equipped in a stator and the spherical rotor with steps on its surface is driven by reaction of Lorentz force acting on the fixed coils. Such a structure is helpful to design a simple actuator and particularly suitable for a spherical actuator. Based on the FEM analysis, design parameters such as the sizes of core and permanent magnet, the width of step, coil turns and maximum current, are determined so as to maximize the torque and rotating angle. For the experimental verification of the feasibility, a prototype is manufactured and its operating characteristicsareinvestigated.
There are a lot of roots of errors in a motion of the optical pick-up actuator being one of the most significantcomponents in a CD-ROM drive. Most of the studios recently performed have a tendency to seek for the causes from an actuator itself. This paper presents dynamic characteristics of an actuator affected by the motion of a feeding deck. The feeding system is modeled as a rigid body with eight degree-of-freedom. Using Largrange's equation, we derive linear equations of motion with respect to the rectangular coordinate. We found that the ranges of the natural frequencies of a feeding deck and the actuator are close to each other. The time responses are also computed by the Newmark method and Runge-Kutta method. The result show that it is important effect to consider feeding deck in modeling and designing an optical pick-up.
In this paper, vibration modes and frequencies of a ring-type stacked piezoelectric actuator for a wire bonding transducer system are analyzed using FEM simulations. We implement experiments using a commercial product model of the actuator PZT module which consists of 6 layer ring-type PZT and 7 electrodes, combined bolts, nut and tinut. There are two main results: One is that FEM analysis should consider the effect the harmonic voltage input in order to meet the experimental results. The other is that the current wire bonder using exciting frequency of 136 kHz should be modified in order to improve the actuator and bonding performance because the actuator module has the main longitudinal mode of 145 kHz.
In this study, the nano-composite actuator based on Fullerene and Nafion was newly developed to improve the electro active polymer actuators. The tensile test was employed to define the mechanical stiffness and strength of the nano-composite membrane. Also, the bending displacement of the Fullerene-Nafion based nano-composite actuator was investigated under DC and AC excitations with various magnitudes and frequencies. As a result, the new nano-composite actuator based on Fullerene-Nafion shows much larger deformation than the pure Nafion based actuator and solves the straightening back Problem of the previous electro active polymer actuators.
