  • The objective of this study is to provide basic data for building better exterior spaces for stadiums in the future by analyzing the behavior of users, such as the satisfaction measure and the physical environment, after using the exterior space at an existing stadium. To achieve this, multiple methods of data gathering and analyses such as field surveys, documentary surveys, and questionnaires research were used in this study. In the survey of user satisfaction, regression analysis was conducted on all factors. Factor analysis was conducted on the variables that were classified into physical, functional, social, and psychological factors. The factors were then tested and based on the results, multiple regression analysis was conducted to measure the effects of the factors concerning satisfaction. A questionnaire research on the use of the exterior space of a stadium as well as the social and economic backgrounds of the users was also conducted in order to utilize the results for the basic data for analysis of satisfaction. According to the results of this study, the exterior space of a stadium satisfied overall expectations. However, it is deemed important to introduce various facilities and activity programs and to improve the exterior spaces for users in building stadiums in the future.

  • This study examines the visitors'evaluations of tourism resources in Insa-dong, which the Seoul metropolitan government has improved recently. This study adopted the method of Importance-Performance Analysis by collecting data through questionnaires. A random sampling of visitors to Insa-dong was conducted in June and July,2001. The survey included questions on the physical and psychological components of Insa-dong's tourism resources. In the case of physical components, eight factors(ancient arts shop, art gallery, atelier, calligraphy shop, pottery arts, traditional tea house, antique shop, traditional clothes) out of thirteen were categorized as 'keeping up the good work'. None of the Physical components was shown as 'low priority'or'possible overkill'. In particular, four factors(restaurant, heritage, Korean-style house and alley, traditional cultural festival) need to be impoved most urgently in terms of visitors'satisfaction. Survey results realize them as high priority in importance but low in performance, thereby designated as, 'concentrate here'. An image of the 'street' showed to be high in importance and identical in performance, so can be categorized between'keeping up the good work'and 'concentrate here'. The results show that unusual outdoor spaces and the festivals of Insa-dong have a significant meaning to the visitors. In the case of psychological components, three factors(general atmosphere experience of unusual atmosphere, appropriateness of stroll time) out of seventeen were categorized as 'keeping up the good work'. Ore factor (shopping) was designated as 'low priority'and not found to be 'possible overkill'. Thirteen factors (various events, possibility of various activity, various flood, richness of play, new experience, education cultural inheritance, parking facilities, resting places, green spaces, meeting places, guide map and information, cleanliness of facilities/convenience) need to be improved mast urgently in terms of visitors' fulfillment. They are perceived as areas of 'concentrate here'. This confirms that attractive events are essential for the recent visitor satisfaction. Furthermore, visitors are not satisfied with its amenity and acccss in Insa-dong despite the improvements. In conclusion, positive impressions, both physical and psychological, should be maintained while factors mentioned to be lacking should be prioritized in order of necessity to improve the image of Insa-dong and solutions need to be found and implemented. The results of this study would be helpful in the planning and management of nsa-dong considering the visitors'requirements.

  • Rooftop greenery has been used as a way to solve urban environmental problems by creating green space in densely populated cities. This study was carried out to suggest more effective designs for roof-garden at hospitals through a post-occupancy evaluation. The roofgarden of Asan Medical Center was evaluated with regards to setting, proximate environmental context, users, and design activity by a multi-method including plan investigations, observations, in-depth interviews and questionnaires. The results are summarized as follows; the users' main activities included resting, walking, and talking. A number of users were observed at shaded spaces sitting on such things as benches, pergolas, and shelters. The satisfaction of the users showed high satisfaction level except in the amount of shade, facilities, and shelter. The variables affecting a overall satisfaction were ‘accessibility’, ‘safety’, ‘quality of surroundings’, and ‘suitability for speculation’. By comparing the design concept with using pattern, designer's intention was not reflected sufficiently in several aspects such as ‘event deck for therapy programs’, ‘grove and path’, and ‘low planters’. This study suggests some design implications; it is necessary to furnish shaded sitting places for passive behaviors and pathways for walking or a light exercise. A wind-break wall with glass windows could widen the users' views in a limited space. Natural shade like tree shade or pergola are more desirable than artificial shades. As for the vertical location of the roofgarden, the middle floor could be better than top area for accessibility. Characteristics of building and users should be considered in detail to provide distinct spaces. Proper technical standards for the greening of artificial ground should be established.

  • Anatomical and biochemical changes of the corn root injured by the root lesion nematode, Pratylenchus vulnus, were examined to understand the interactions between the nematode and the crop which can be applied to a breeding program for nematode-resistant crop. The nematode and the crop which can be applied to be a breeding program for nematode-resistant crop. The nematode entered the cortex of corn root through its epidemis. They moved to other cortical cells by breaking their cell walls. They, finally, gathered around the endodermis of the roots and the bases of the root hairs. Parasitism of the nematode formed cavities within the root tissues where the females laid eggs. Major root damage by the nematode occurred in the cortical cells where must cell walls were broken and crushed to form empty spaces. These empty spaces in the base of the root resulted in this breakdown. Damage-induced biochemical changes of the corn roots were analysed by their total protein patterns and esterase activities in both control and nematode-infected roots. Denaturing gel did not show any significant difference in the banding patterns between them. Esterase patterns and activities, also, were not significantly different between the infected and the control roots.

  • Suppression effect of the 12 bacterial isolates from plant rhizosphere against late blight caused by Phytophthora citrophthora were investigated on citrus fruits. Among the bacterial isolates, THJ609-3, TRH423-3, BRH433-2, Lyso-chit and KRY505-3 presented disease suppression after wound inoculation with the fungal pathogen in vivo. The anti-fungal activity was evaluated by measuring the length of inhibition zone of the mycelium P. citrophthora adjacent to the effective bacterial isolates in which all of the 5 bacterial isolates showed antagonistic effects. However, there was no positive correlations between the efficacy of disease suppression and the antagonistic effect. On the other hand, Lyso-chit and KRY505-3 were identified as Bacillus cereus, BRH433-2 as B. circulans and TRH423-3 as Burkholderia gladioli, respectively, by analysis of rDNA sequence on the internal transcript spaces. It is suggested that the effective bacterial isolates may be useful for finding biological control agents against late blight especially on environment-friendly farm where the application of fungicide is limited.

  • This paper is a study of the possibility of experience and expression in the architecture of Louis I. Kahn by focusing on the characters of entrance, court and window/wall of his public buildings. In the course of composition, Kahn defined the entrance, court and window/wall as an connecting elements and elements of boundary. The characters revealed by these elements or rooms give the clue to insight Kahn's thought of relation of interior and exterior space or inner and outer space. Following are the characters of these elements. First, a entrance reveals the fact that inner space separates from outer space by connecting these two space and giving the value to inner space as the entity and totality like outer space. The entrance gives its ontological being to human subjects not by vision but experience and expression which is the essence of commonness, that is, Silence. Kahn made the possibility of activity amplify in this common and silent space. Second, this entrance is connected with wide and huge central space not individual spaces of interior space. This extreme procedure of entering makes human subject feel sublime of intoner space. And the central spaces becomes another exterior or another world in the inner world of architecture by the lights from above and by having the boundary wall which shows same pattern of exterior wall. Third, Kahn regarded a window as the giver of lights not as the medium of vision connecting inner space with outer. He tried to connect interior with exterior through the being and character of the light expressed in the interior. And in his buildings, interior space is connected with exterior by expressing the purpose of building, composition of inner space, structural truth and construction facts through the Form, a pattern of wall, details and ornamental joints. By practicing this thoughts in the real buildings, Kahn tried to gave aura to both the interior space and entity of architecture which is regarded as micro universe like flowers, rocks and human beings.

  • This research is aimed at providing the possibility for overcoming the current people's status of exclusion and fragmented spaces of urban regions. In this context, it needs to be considered that how the social movements, which are in collusion with spatial characteristics, are proceeding in urban societies. In order to find the clue to such problems, this study is going to investigate the social practice especially based on Lefebvre's theory. Because of the abstract characteristics of Lefebvre's issue, an explicit case of that social theory must be contemplated for practical use of his concepts. For the purpose of proposing such practices, this research has been striving to analyze the case of Mullae Art Village through the method of intelviewing the artists of that place and using the statistical data. And then this research has tried to draw the clue about how to overcome the status of exclusion by considering their spatial movements.

  • In terms of the concept of space in urban planning and design, the modern city approaches from the perspective that all spaces are made up of different places based on identity. In this study, we analyzed disparate image by paying attention to the difference between the individual spaces that form the city. And the physical and behavioral factors that respond to the disparate spatial images are derived through legibility measurement. As a result, the urban space in Busan has disparate images such as closure, openness, dynamic + closure, dynamic + openness, quiet space. The following are the legibility factors that make each image stronger. The elements of closure are high-density and high-rise buildings, residence, work, openness appeared as a factor of water space, walking and viewing. Dynamic & Closure is the element of industrial activity, dynamic & openness is open space, water space, swimming element, quiet space image is green space, walking, stay factor.

  • One of the physiological disease, sudden wiliting of Yushin variety suggested that low sunlight, excessive nitrogen application, and highly reduced soil condions either singly or combined, might be possible causes of the disorder. Some visual symptom of sudden wilting are discoloration of leaves, development of nodal roots above the soil surface, total root rot, and lodging. Those observations led to the hypothesis that suffocation of root tissues was a direct cause of the wilting. The oxygen transport characteristics of Yushin, IR262 and Tongil were examined by two methods. First, Soil-cultured plants of the three varieties were subjected to paraffin treatment to decrease the oxygen supply from the air to root tissues through the soil-water system, liquid paraffin was applied to the water surface in the pots at panicle formation stage. In this experiment, sudden wilting was observed of Yushin and IR262 at about a week after the treatment, but Tongil remained green and healthy. Wilting-resistant variety Tongil had higher oxygen release, whereas the susceptible Yushin and IR262 had lower oxygen release. Second, the number and size of the air spaces in each internode were investigated in the 5th internode from the top, all three varieties have a similar number of air spaces, although the air spaces of Thongil were larger. In the 4th internode, Tongil had plenty air spaces, Yushin and one of the Yushin's parents IR262 had scanty or none. The observations indicated that the ability of Yushin and IR262 for oxygen transport is very limited compared with that of Tongil. The limited oxygen supply due to poor development of air space in internode of rice plants may cause suffocation of root tissues, weaken metabolic activity of the tissues, and induce root rot, subsequently inducing sudden wilting and lodging under unfavorable weather, soil and cultural conditions.
