Extracts of 33 medicinal herbs belonging to 28 different families used as precious resources in the Northeast Asia were tested for their antiviral activities against two major plant viruses. Twenty one methanol extracts from 19 different families were found to have a antiviral activity against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) when tested on indicator plants under greenhouse conditions. Most of these extracts have weak activities at the concentration used. But the methanol extracts of Phellinus linteus exhibited potent ($98.7{\pm}1.3%$) antiviral activity against TMV infection and also showed $97.2{\pm}2.2%$ activity against CMV infection. The methanol extracts of the gall of Rhus javanica also showed strong inhibitory efficacy over $98.7{\pm}1.1%$ against TMV or CMV infection. Further research is needed to elucidate the active constituents of these medicinal herbs which may be useful in the development of new and effective antiviral agent against plant viruses.

To develop an effective skin whitening agent for cosmetics, we isolated cucurbitacin B from Cucumis sativus L. which has been used as traditional skin lighting regimen by the bioactivity-guided fractionation, and investigated the inhibitory effects of cucurbitacin B on melanogenesis. At a non-cytotoxic concentration, cucurbitacin B reduced melanin contents of B16F1 melanoma cells in a dose-dependent manner. Cucurbitacin B did not directly inhibit mushroom tyrosinase activity, but it inhibited intracellular tyrosinase activity in a dose-dependent manner. Its inhibitory mechanism on melanin biosynthesis was further assessed, and we found that cucurbitacin B significantly decreased the protein level of tyrosinase, a major melanogenic enzymes and MITF, a master transcriptional factor of melanogenesis. In addition, cucurbitacin B increased the expression of WW domain-containing oxidoreductase (WWOX) which is known to function as tumor repressor and inhibits $Wnt/{\beta}$-catenin pathway. Collectively, these results suggest that cucuritacin B from C. sativus could be used as an active ingredient for skin whitening.

Aralia elata Seem. have a typical traditional significance among the wild herbs traditionally. Edible shoots of A. elata will augment consumer's interest due to its high value functional value, eco-friendly and pesticide-free produce. A. elata's root, fruit and bark are used as material of hypoglycemic agent and medicine for diabetes, kidney trouble, acute hepatitis, rheumation arthritis, stomach cancer and gastroenteric trouble. Flavonoid glycoside compound which is separated from A. elata's shoot shows high antioxidative activity. Also, root's identified active materials of antimicrobial was reported to be produced as food preservative and handy antimicrobial. Therefore, this research investigated quantitative morphological characteristics of leaves, spine and bud in naturally dominated and introducted A. elata in south Korea and then considered its principal compound analysis(PCA) and classification analysis(CA) among the 6 improved cultivars and 19 clones. PCA results showed that it show 76% accumulated explanation from four PC. The A. elata clones were classified into five groups; the first group of 15 clones including Yeongok, the second group of 5 clones including Yeoju, the third group of Bonghwa, Ulleung, the fourth group of Yongmunsa, Boseong and the fifth group of Singu. The object of this study will give us invaluable information about breeding by selection of A. elata in south Korea.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the vasodilatation effect of kirenol isolated from Sigesbeckia pubescens on the rabbit basilar artery. In this study, to determine the vasodilatation effect of kirenol on the rabbit basilar artery, arterial rings with intact or damaged endothelium were used for the experiment. And used an organ bath and force transducer were contracted by endothelin. Kirenol, major active constituents of S. pubescens, showed a moderate vasodilatation effect on the basilar arteries of rabbits. Therefore, treatment with kirenol may selectively accelerate cerebral blood flow through dilatation of the basilar artery. This result suggests a potential role of kirenol isolated from S. pubescens as a source of vasodilatation agent.

In order to inhibit the growth of pathogens and degrade biogenic amines during the fermentation of soybean products, an isolate with antimicrobial activity against pathogens and biogenic amine-degrading property was obtained from 83 traditionally fermented soybean products. The morphological and biochemical tests and the phylogenetic relationship among 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate named as the strain SCK B11 was most closely related to Bacillus licheniformis. The cell-free supernatant of two day cultures was active against several pathogens including Enterococcus faecalis, Listeria monocytosis, Micrococcus luteus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus cereus, and Staphylococcus aureus. PCR analysis was conducted to determine relatedness to antimicrobial lantibiotics and biosurfactants produced by Bacillus spp., but showed negative for the genes encoding surfactin, lichenysin, and lichenicidine. Electron microscopic observation indicated that the antimicrobial agent seemed to attack the membrane of the pathogens, leaving the ghost or shrunken cells. The strain was found to degrade histamine by 72% and tyramine by 66% in the cooked soybean containing 5.3% of biogenic amine over 10 days of fermentation time. The use of selected strain would be a potential control measure in manufacturing traditionally fermented soybean products that are difficult to control pathogens and biogenic amine levels.
At the end of 1997 about 3 million tons of coal ash was produced as byproducts from the coal fired electrical power plants in Korea. Only about 27% of that byproducts was utilized as the admixtures of cement and concrete industry. But the large quantity of coal fired fly-ash has been used as the soil improvement materials in other countries. So the aim of this study is the estimation of the applicability of the coal fired fly-ash as microfine grouting materials by admixing the superfine particles which were separated from the coal fired fly-ash for the higher values. The 6 types of specimens were manufactured in the laboratory for the purpose of estimating the chemical and physical properties of cement and grouts. These specimens consisted of 2 specific surfaces of 6, 000 and 8, 000$cm^2$/g in Elaine method. And these specimens are devide into 3 ratios (30%, 50%, 70%) of fly-ash by weight. From the estimated properties of the coal fired fly-ash microflne cements and grouts, 50% fly-ash is the most suitable ratio for grouting materials. However, further study of durability is necessary for using fly-ash grouts practically at the field projects. The higher content of the unburned carbon of fly-ash increases the thinner layer of carbon on the surface of solution of grouts, and requires more quantity of surface active agent. As a results of this study, it is found that the microfine fly-ash is very useful as a good grouting material if 50% of fly-ash is added with the microfine portland cement. So, in the near future, if the coal fired fly-ash is able to be used as grouting material in Korea, the demand of fly-ash will increase rapidly.
An endoparasitoid wasp, Cotesia plutellae, has been used for a biological control agent against the diamondback moth, Plutellae xylostella. It has a symbiotic polydnavirus in their reproductive tract, which is required for its successful parasitization. Here, we measured a specific replication time of the polydnavirus during female development of C. plutellae. We, also, analyzed the reproductive potentials of female C. plutellae under mating or different host conditions. At $25^{\circ}C$, pupal C. plutellae began to develop adult tissues such as compound eyes and wings since day 2. At day 5, all adult tissues including antennae were developed and were ready to emerge. With polyclonal antibody raised against C. plutellae polydnavirus, an immunobloting could confirm virus replication at day 4 during pupal stage. Virus particles could be visualized by transmission electron microscope in the oviduct lumen of day 5 pupae. After adult eclosion, venom gland and ovarian calyx increased in size, though ovarioles did not. Mated females layed large number of eggs (over $60\%$) at first 4 days during their mean longevity of ca. 8 days at $25^{\circ}C$. Unmated females showed less active ovipositional behavior, where all the eggs developed into males. C. Plutellae parasitized both P. xylostella and fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea. However, C. Plutellae developed faster and showed higher successful paarasitization in P. xylostella than in H. cunea.

Background: Some clinical trials have reported that a new analgesic combination of tramadol and acetaminophen provides good efficacy in various pain models. For the more clinical uses of this agent, comparisons about the onset of analgesia and analgesic efficacy in the acute state of pain with the other drugs known as strong analgesics were needed. Purpose: The goal of this study was to compare the times to onset of analgesia and the other analgesic efficacy of 75 mg tramadol/650 mg acetaminophen and 20 mg codeine/500 mg acetaminophen/400 mg ibuprofen in the treatment of acute pain after oral surgery. Patients and Methods: Using a randomized, single-dose, parallel-group, single-center, and active-controlled test design, this clinical study compared the times to onset of analgesia using a two-stopwatch technique and the other analgesic efficacy of the single-dose tramadol/acetaminophen and codeine/acetaminophen/ibuprofen. These were assessed in 128 healthy subjects with pain from oral surgical procedures involving extraction of one or more impacted third molars requiring bone removal. From the time of pain development, the times to onset of perceptible and meaningful pain relief, pain intensity, pain relief, an overall assessment, and adverse events of the study medications were recorded for 6 hours. Results: The demographic distribution and baseline pain data in the two groups were statistically similar. The median times to onset of perceptible pain relief were 21.0 and 24.4 minutes in the tramadol/acetaminophen and codeine/acetaminophen/ibuprofen groups respectively and those to onset of meaningful pain relief were 56.4 and 57.3 minutes, which were statistically similar. The other efficacy variables such as mean total pain relief (TOTPAR) and the sum of pain intensity differences (SPID) were also similar in the early period after pain development and drug dosing. The safety of tramadol/acetaminophen was well tolerated and very comparable to that of codeine/acetaminophen/ibuprofen. Conclusions: In this acute dental pain model, the onset of analgesia and analgesic efficacy of tramadol/acetaminophen was comparable to that of codeine/acetaminophen/ibuprofen. These results showed that tramadol/acetaminophen was recommendable for fast and effective treatment in the management of postoperative acute pain.
A dental treatment room is always exposed to diverse kinds of pathogenic bacteria, and may be a mediating place of cross-infection given being contaminated the interior of a room through several routes in the form of patient's secretion and aerosol. The main agent of preventing cross-infection is a dental hygienist in the dental treatment and the dental treatment room where are scattered about a risk of cross-infection. A dental hygienist needs to have right recognition on infection control before being active as a clinical expert. This infection-control recognition level is influenced from the clinical practice. Accordingly, to survey recognition of infection control, a self-administered questionnaire research was conducted targeting 314 students who are fixed the clinical practice as regular subject in the junior course out of curriculum for the Department of Dental Hygiene at some of 4-year universities. Data collection was performed from December 9, 2011 to February 22, 2012. Except 11 copies of questionnaire with insincere response among the collected materials, 303 copies were finally analyzed by using SPSS WIN 20.0. The following conclusions were obtained. In the infection disease section, both on and off campus showed 4.89 points from 'the importance of recognizing the infections prevention', 4.65 points from 'recognizing the compulsory preventative injection for hepatitis type B', 4.77 points from 'recognizing the necessity of the preventative injection for hepatitis type B', 4.71 points from 'whether practice the prevention in reality or not', and 4.76 points from 'the educational helps to the prevention'. In other words, the section recorded the highest and meaningful points. It is considered to be needed the development in systematic and diverse infection-control educational programs and the differentiated education depending on school year for dental hygiene students.
This study was designed to prospect the $^{111}In$-labelled paclitaxel as tumor imaging agent. In order to provide a taxol molecule with a functional group which is able to chelate In-111, taxol-DTPA conjugate and 2'-hemisuccinyltaxol were synthesized by esterification of taxol at C-2'on C-13 carbon with DTPA anhydride and succinic anhydride, respectively. Synthesis yield of the taxol derivatives was 34% for taxol-DTPA and 80% for 2'-hemisuccinyltaxol. Cytotoxicity of the taxol derivatives were measured by MTT method toward cell lines HT29, B16, P388, and CT26. The cytotoxic activities of the taxol derivatives were maintained, although less active than taxol. Radiolabelling of the taxol derivatives were proceeded directly with $^{111}InCl_3$ or indirectly with $^{111}In$-citrate(ligand-exchange method). The ligand-exchange method was not suitable because some precipitates appeared during the reaction. On the contrary, by direct radiolabelling method, we were able to obtain taxol-DTPA-$^{111}In$ in 100% radiochemical yield. However, 2'-hemisuccinyltaxol was not labelled by both methods. Yield and radiochemical purity of the radiolabelled com-pound were determined by HPLC, paper chromatography and instant thin layer chromatography. Taxol-DTPA-$^{111}In$ was characterized to be hydrophilic by lipophilicity test, and nearly non-adhesive to HT29, B16, P388, and CT26 by cell binding affinity test. Binding affinity of the taxol-DTPA-$^{111}In$ complex to serum proteins was also examined by protein precipitation with 30% trichloroacetic acid. The results showed that 30% of the taxol-DTPA-$^{111}In$ complex binds with serum proteins.
