The purpose of this study is to offer basic data on cosmetics by investigating college women's purchasing and use behaviors regarding cosmetics according to their experience with side effects. A questionnaire was administered to 351 college women in the Seoul and Kyoung-in areas. The data were analyzed with SPSS Statistics V22.0 using frequency, ${\chi}^2$-test, and t-test. The results are as follows. First, 72.6% of surveyed women reported experiencing side effects from cosmetics. The largest side effects were acne and boils, and the primary ways of coping with these side effects were discontinuing use and using other products. Second, the group that experienced cosmetics' side effects used brands that were more expensive and eco-friendly than the group without side effects. Third, the group that experienced side effects continued to use the product more than the group without side effects. The primary reason for continued use was efficacy, and the reasons for discontinued use were efficacy and curiosity. Fourth, the side-effects group proactively identified cosmetics ingredients more than the non-side-effects group. Specifically, they checked the major components, the function, and for any hazardous ingredients. Fifth and finally, 98.3% of survey respondents purchased and used functional cosmetics. The group that had experience with side effects used more functional cosmetics than the group without side effects.
The purpose of the present research was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil extracted from Pinus koraiensis seed against pathogens related to acne. The essential oil was extracted by steam distillation method. The chemical compositions of essential oil were analyzed by GC-MS. Alpha-pinene (29.87%), D-limonene (19.26%), betapinene (11.19%), beta-myrcene (3.84%), n-hexadecanoi acid (3.2%), beta-caryphyllene (2.72%), and cyclohexene (2.17%) were main components. This essential oil had antimicrobial activities against Malasseizia furfur, Propionibacterium acnes, and Staphylococcus epidermidis.

This study was designed to analyze the chemical compositions of 'Setoka' branch essential oils (SEBO) and to test their biological activities. 'Setoka' is a Citrus species widely cultivated in Jeju Island. At the present, 'Setoka' branches produced by thinning process were mostly discarded as a waste. Therefore, utilization of this branch waste has received much attention. 'Setoka' branch essential oils (SBEO) were prepared by treatment of its ethanol extracts with jojoba oil. SBEO were chemically analyzed using gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and following components were identified; ethyl linoleate (64.14%), ethyl palmitate (16.50%), neophytadiene (11.06%) and beta-citronellol (5.09%). The anti-inflammatory activity in the SBEO was examined using RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells stimulated with LPS. As a result, the SBEO inhibited nitric oxide (NO) productions with a dose-dependent manner. In addition, SBEO showed good anti-microbial activities against drug-susceptible and -resistant skin pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Propionibacterium acnes, which are acne-causing bacteria. Based on these results, we suggest that SBEO has the possibility for use as an anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial agent in cosmetic applications.

In this study, we examined the use of cosmetics among adolescents in our country and their purchasing behavior, as the use of cosmetics has increasingly been prevailing in the younger generation. The aims of this study were to investigate the state of the youth cosmetics market, to grasp the needs of youth and ultimately to suggest the right directions for the youth cosmetics market. The subjects in this study were 1,092 boys and girls from 10 selected secondary schools in Seoul. After a survey was conducted, the answer sheets from 1,074 respondents were gathered, and the collected data were analyzed by the statistical package (SPSS WIN 18.0). The vast majority of the teens participated in the survey were answered to use basic cosmetics daily, and there was a gradual increase in the frequency that they used color cosmetics. They started to use cosmetics earlier in ages than the older generations. Most of them were in trouble due to acne, and the most dominant way to get rid of their skin troubles was by using cosmetics. The most common place at which they purchased cosmetics were brand shops, and they gave priority to the function of the products when they bought cosmetics. The adolescents were still told by their schools to abstain from using cosmetics, and that was the case for social climate as well. Yet they definitely wanted to be allowed to use cosmetics.
Various skin diseases are occurring due to external factors such as urbanization and increase in environmental pollution and wearing masks due to COVID-19. Accordingly, various functional cosmetics are being released, but as some side effects are reported, research on functional cosmetics materials using natural plants is necessary. Therefore, in this study, the antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects of Phyllanthus emblica, Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), and Commiphora myrrha mixed extracts (PGC) that pharmacological efficacy has been verified were analyzed and their potential as functional cosmetics raw materials was examined. Four extracts (PGC-1~4) were prepared according to the extraction method. ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activity experiments were conducted for the antioxidant efficacy of the extracts. In addition, paper disc experiments and LPS inflammation-inducing cytokine experiments were conducted to examine the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. In addition, a cell viability test was performed to confirm cytotoxicity. As results of the study, all extracts showed antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects without cytotoxicity, and in particular, PGC-4, a fermentation and ultrasonic extract, showed the best efficacy. This means that the extraction yield of useful components varies depending on the extraction method.

Acne is a chronic skin disease that typically occurs in the teens and twenties, and its symptoms vary according to age, sex, diet, and lifestyle. The condition is characterized by hyperproliferation of keratinocytes in the epidermis, sebum overproduction, excessive growth of Propionibacterium acnes, and P. acnes-induced skin inflammation. Interleukin (IL)-1α and IL-6 are predominant in the inflammatory lesions of acne vulgaris. These cytokines induce an inflammatory reaction in the skin in the presence of pathogens or stresses. Moreover, IL-1α accelerates the production of keratin 16, which is typically expressed in wounded or aberrant skin, leading to abnormalities in architecture and hyperkeratinization. Orobol (3',4',5,7-tetrahydroxyisoflavone) is a metabolite of genistein that inhibited the P. acnes-induced increases in IL-6 and IL-1α levels in human keratinocytes (HaCaTs) more effectively compared with salicylic acid. In addition, orobol decreased the IL-1α and IL-6 mRNA levels and inhibited the phosphorylation of inhibitor of kappa-B kinase, nuclear factor of kappa light polypeptide gene enhancer in B-cells inhibitor, alpha, and mitogen-activated protein kinase induced by P. acnes. Finally, the expression of Ki67 was decreased by orobol. Thus, orobol ameliorated the inflammation and hyperkeratinization induced by heat-killed P. acnes and thus has potential for use in functional foods and cosmetics.

This study was conducted to empirically analyze the effects and interactions among beneficial bacteria, commensal bacteria, and acne bacteria, which are factors in the skin microbiomes, on detrimental bacteria by 289 people, who are 20 to 49 years old among Koreans. As a result of multiple regression models using bio big data of skin microbiomes, when the difference in skin microbiomes according to the sex and age of the subjects was controlled, the beneficial bacteria showed a negative (-) effect on the detrimental bacteria, while the commensal and acne bacteria showed a positive (+) effect. Particularly, the negative (-) effect of beneficial bacteria on detrimental bacteria was different through interaction with acne bacteria according to the level of commensal bacteria. These results demonstrate that the activation of beneficial bacteria inhibits detrimental bacteria, and the effect of skin microbiomes on detrimental bacteria is balanced with skin microbiomes through interaction with independent influence. Therefore, it is suggested that when studying skin microbiomes products to help the proliferation of beneficial bacteria and to create a skin environment that inhibits detrimental bacteria in the personalized cosmetics manufacturing industry, it is necessary to consider the independent effects and interactions among skin microbiome factors together.

To evaluate the possibility as a natural preservative of Cornus officinalis seed extracts, we investigated the anti-microbial activity and preservation effect of cosmetics. Cornus officinalis seed extracted with 1,3-Butylene Glycol(1,3-BG) and Ethanol(EtOH). As a result, Cornus officinalis seed extracts showed anti-microbial activity at Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Propionibacterium acnes and Cornus officinalis seed 1,3-BG extracts(COS-A) showed $26.7{\pm}4.0mm$ clear zone at the $1000.0{\mu}l/ml$. Minimum inhibitory concentration of S. epidermidis was observed at Cornus officinalis seed EtOH extracts(COS-B) $25.0{\mu}l/ml$. The result of challenge test for preservation effect on cosmetics, S. aureus and S. epidermidis was 100% eliminated from emulsion containing COS-A and COS-B after 7 days. These results suggest that Cornus officinalis seed extracts may have possibility as the natural preservative instead of synthetic perservative on cosmetics.
The objective of this study is to prepare a stable delivery systems containing polyethoxylated retinamide(PERA) - derivatives of retinoic acid, effective anti-wrinkle and anti-acne agent. Cubic liquid crystalline phase gel (CLCPG) and cubosomes containing various concentrations of PERA were prepared to investigate the physicochemical properties. Furthermore, stability and transdermal absorption efficacy of the CLCPG containing PERA were investigated in comparison with oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions which are predominantly used as a topical formulation. CLCPG increase the stability of PERA in comparison with O/W emulsion. For tropical application, CLCPG containing PERA shows higher moisturizing effect than that of O/W emulsion. In skin permeation test, CLCPG shows higher PERA deposit on epidermis. With its specific physicochemical property caused by the glyceryl oleate, CLCPG itself could be used for stabilizer of various actives and applied as an effective delivery system for topical application. Cubosome, nano-sized dispersed CLCPG, is also expected to be applied in a various field of industry like food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
