Proton-NMR spectroscopic method was applied to kinetic study of concentrated sulfuric acid hydrolysis reaction, especially focused on 2nd step of acid hydrolysis with deferent reaction time and temperature as main variables. Commercial xylan extracted from beech wood was used as model compound. In concentrated acid hydrolysis, xylan was converted to xylose, which is unstable in 2nd hydrolysis condition, which decomposed to furfural or other reaction products. Without neutralization steps, proton-NMR spectroscopic analysis method was valid for analysis of not only monosaccharide (xylose) but also other reaction products (furfural and formic acid) in acid hydrolyzates from concentrated acid hydrolysis of xylan, which was the main advantages of this analytical method. Higher temperature and longer reaction time at 2nd step acid hydrolysis led to less xylose concentration in xylan acid hydrolyzate, especially at $120^{\circ}C$ and 120 min, which meant hydrolyzed xylose was converted to furfural or other reaction products. Loss of xylose was not match with furfural formation, which meant part of furfural was degraded to other undetected compounds. Formation of formic acid was unexpected from acidic dehydration of pentose, which might come from the glucuronic acid at the side chain of xylan.

The optimum condition for the extraction and purification processes of phytic acid from defatted rice bran was examined. The phytic acid was efficiently extracted when the defatted rice bran was treated with 10 volumes of 0.5% HCl for 1 hr. For the neutralization of acid-treated extract, 0.5% NaOH was the most acceptable. To purify phytic acid, Diaion HP20 resin was used to remove impurities from the extract. The flow-through was then loaded onto ion exchange columns packed with various resins and among them, Amberlite IRA-416 resin showed highest recovery yield. When the phytic acid was absorbed onto Amberlite IRA-416 resin and then eluted with 0.5% NaOH, 89% of applied phytic acid was eluted. Most proteins were removed from the purified phytic acid and total protein content of the phytic acid was 0.14%(w/w).

The antimicrobial activity-possessing materials were screened in the cell free supernatant (CFS) of fourteen lactic acid-fermenting strains isolated from pig's intestine. Each cell free supernatant of cultured strains was treated with various proteinases, heat, and/or alkali (NaOH). The antimicrobial activities were remained even after the enzyme and heat treatment but disappeared after neutralization with 1M NaOH, implying that the materials would be organic acids rather than proteins. Further purification of CFS through solid phase extraction using Sep-pak $C_{18}$ Cartridges and high performance anion exchange chromatography using Bio-LC system revealed that four organic acids, such as oxalic acid, citric acid, lactic acid, and acetic acid, were the main materials for the activity. Lactic acid was the highest amount in all organic acids, ranging from 54% to 77%. This strongly implies that the lactic acid would be the primary material for the antimicrobial activity in all tested strains.
Lactic acid bacteria were isolated from silage, which produce high level of hydrogen peroxide in cell culture supernatant. The 16S rDNA sequences of the isolate matched perfectly with that of Lactobacillus fermentum (99.9%), examined by a 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis and similarity search using the GenBank database, thus named L. fermentum CS12-1. L. fermentum CS12-1 showed resistance to low pH and bile acid. The production of hydrogen peroxide by L. fermentum CS12-1 was confirmed by catalase treatment and high-performance liquid chromatography. L. fermentum CS12-1 accumulated hydrogen peroxide in culture broth as cells grew, and the highest concentration of hydrogen peroxide reached 3.5 mM at the late stationary growth phase. The cell-free supernatant of L. fermentum CS12-1 both before and after neutralization inhibited the growth of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli K88 that causes diarrhea in piglets.

The present study concerns the acid neutralization capacity (ANC) of cement paste, mortar and concrete depending on a free water-cement ratio. The ANC of paste at 30%, 40% and 50% of water-cement ratio was measured and simultaneously the effect of aggregate on the ANC was evaluated. It was found that an increase in the acid concentration resulted in a decrease in the pH of the suspension, in particular, at 10 in the pH, a sharp decrease was observed. The ANC showed some peak resistances to acid at particular pH values.
Ethanol productions were performed by separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) processes using seaweed, Enteromorpha intestinalis (sea lettuce). Pretreatment conditions were optimized by the performing thermal acid hydrolysis and enzymatic hydrolysis for the increase of ethanol yield. The pretreatment by thermal acid hydrolysis was carried out with different sulfuric acid concentrations in the range of 25 mM to 75 mM $H_2SO_4$, pretreatment time from 30 to 90 minutes and solid contents of seaweed powder in the range of 10~16% (w/v). Optimal pretreatment conditions were determined as 75 mM $H_2SO_4$ and 13% (w/v) slurry at $121^{\circ}C$ for 60 min. For the further saccharification, enzymatic hydrolysis was performed by the addition of commercial enzymes, Celluclast 1.5 L and Viscozyme L, after the neutralization. A maximum reducing sugar concentration of 40.4 g/L was obtained with 73% of theoretical yield from total carbohydrate. The ethanol concentration of 8.6 g/L of SHF process and 7.6 g/L of SSF process were obtained by the yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae KCTC 1126, with the inoculation cell density of 0.2 g dcw/L.
Red mud is formed as a waste during bauxite refining known as Bayer's process. Its main constituents are iron, aluminium, sodium and silica. The disposal of large quantities of wasted red mud causes a serious ecological problem. In this study, the red mud wasted from the bauxite refinery was studied for phosphate removal from aqueous solution according to activation methods. The influence of heat treatment, and neutralization with sea water and acid treatment level for the optimum conditions for phosphate removal have been determined. Heat treatment combined with acid treatment is most suitable for the removal of phosphate from aqueous solution. The optimal condition was activated with 1 N HCl solution after heating in $600^{\circ}C$ during 4 hours. Acid and heat treatment causes sodalite compounds which hinder the phosphate adsorption to leach out. The adsorption data obtained followed a first-order rate expression and fitted well with the Freundlich Isotherm well.
Acid sulfate soil (ASS) and potential acid sulfate soil (PASS) are distribution in worldwide and originate from sedimentary process, volcanic activity, or metamorphism and are problematic in agriculture and environmental due to their present and potential acidity developed by the oxidation. The PASS was defined as soil materials that had sulfidic layer more than 20 cm thick within 4 m of the soil profile and contained more than 0.15% of total-sulfur (T-S). A tentative interpretative soil classification system was proposed weak potential acid sulfate (T-S, 0.15-0.5%), moderate potential acid sulfate (T-S, 0.5-0.75%) and strong potential acid sulfate (T-S, more than 0.75%). PASS due to excess of pyrite over soil neutralizing capacity are formed. It provides no information on the kinetic rates of acid generation or neutralization; therefore, the test procedures used in acid base account (ABA) are referred to as static procedures. The net acid generation (NAG) test is a direct method to measure the ability of the sample to produce acid through sulfide oxidation and also provides and indication. The NAG test can evaluated easily whether the soils is PASS. The samples are mixed sandy loam and the PAS from the hydrothermal altered andesite (1:3, 1:8, 1:16, 1:20, 1:40, 1:80 and 1:200 ratios) in this study. We could find out that the NAG pH of the soil containing 0.75% of T-S was 2.5, and that of the soil has 0.15% of T-S was 3.8. NAG pH test can be proposed as soil classification criteria for the potential acid sulfate soils. The strong type has NAG pH of 2.5, the moderate one has NAG pH of 3.0, and the weak one has NAG pH of 3.5.

The steel pipe manufacturing industry deals with facilities and materials. Especially thermal facilities are close to vapor cloud explosion (VCE) and may cause secondary damage to facilities because they deal with corrosive substances such as hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid and acid, fire, explosion, leakage etc. It is in danger. In this study, hazard identification method was conducted using HAZOP techniques and quantitative risk analysis was conducted using e-CA, a program that supports accident impact analysis. Equipment in the influence range of ERPG - 3 was determined to be a facility requiring replacement. It was decided that neutralization is necessary using slaked lime. Based on the cost of loss, We presented the proper replacement which is the timing of the dangerous facility. As a result, It was ideal to replace the facilities with 20 years of heat treatment facilities, one year of hydrofluoric acid storage tank, 20 years of sulfuric acid storage tank, and 5 years of hydrochloric acid storage tank.
In this study, we simulated an amine regeneration process with heat-stable salts removal unit. We derived the optimal operating conditions considering the flow rate of waste, the removal rate of heat-stable salts, and the loss rate of MDEA (methyl diethanolamine). In the amine regeneration process that absorbs and removes acid gas, heat-stable salt impairs the absorption efficiency of process equipment and amine solution. An ion exchange resin method is to remove heat-stable salts through neutralization by using a strong base solution such as NaOH. The acid gas removal process was established using the Radfrac model, and the equilibrium constant of the reaction was calculated using Gibbs free energy. The removed amine solution is separated and flows to the heat-stable salts remover which is modeled by using the Rstoic model with neutralization reaction. Actual operation data and simulation results were compared and verified, and also a case study was conducted by adjusting the inflow mass of removal unit followed by suggesting optimal conditions.
