  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of writing science diary on science learning motivation, science academic achievement and ecological sensitivity of elementary students. Teaching unit was focused on 'The structure and function of plants' in 6th grade science text book. The subjects of study were 51 students of two classes. One class of 25 students, experimental group, wrote science diaries as homework. While the other class of 26 students, comparative group, performed homeworks with fill-in-the-blank worksheets. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, writing science diary had a meaningful effect on improvement of science learning motivation. Second, writing science diary had a meaningful effect on improvement of science academic achievement. Third, writing science diary had a meaningful effect on improvement of ecological sensitivity. And we could find that students had a favorable impression and high satisfaction level about writing science diary from the questionnaire.

  • This study was conducted to present implications for mathematics education by identifying the structural relationship among personality, negative emotion, motivation, and career maturity that affects elementary school student's mathematical academic achievement. The participants conveniently sampled 179 students, from 4th to 6th graders enrolled in the same elementary school, and data on their psychological variables were collected in the form of secondary data. The hypothetical structural equation model established based on prior studies was verified with a two-stage approach based on the collected data. It was confirmed that construct validity and construct reliability were secured through assessing the measurement model. In addition, as a result of analyzing the path coefficient of the final structural equation model, five paths were found to be significant: 'personality→motivation', 'personality→career maturity', 'negative emotion→motivation', and 'negative motivation→mathematical academic achievement'. In particular, the path of 'negative emotion→negative motivation→mathematics academic achievement' that can be confirmed through the results needs to moderate negative emotions to improve mathematical academic achievement, and at this time, negative motivation should be considered together.

  • This study aims to explore latent classes in terms of changing patterns in achievement motivation among the samples from elementary school to middle school students in multicultural families and to investigate factors to predict latent groups and their relationship with academic achievement. 1254 pairs of mother and child from the 1st to 6th years of Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study (MAPS) was utilized for the Latent Class Growth Analysis (LCGA), One-way ANOVA, Multinomial Logistic Regression. The results showed that there were four distinct subgroups within the samples in terms of achievement goal orientations (i.e. very-high changing group, average changing group, low stable group, very-low stable group) at all six time points, and students who reported high achievement motivation were likely to have higher academic achievement. Four groups were extracted based on parent's efficacy, students' self-esteem, and teacher's support. Suggestions and practical implications for understanding the types of subgroups for the achievement motivation of multicultural families were discussed.

  • This study attempted to determine the relationship between college students' motivation for major selection (personal motivation, social motivation), academic performance, and career maturity, and to identify the influencing factors of career maturity in order to provide basic data for improving career maturity. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire from 199 university students in C city. As a result of examining the correlation between personal motivation for major selection, social motivation, academic achievement, and career maturity, career maturity showed a significant positive correlation with personal motivation for major selection (r=.417, p=.00) and no significant correlation with social motivation for major selection and academic achievement. The influencing factors of career maturity were personal motivation for major selection, economic activity, and major department, and the explanatory power was 24%. Therefore, it seems that university-level support is needed to enable students to engage in economic activities in fields related to their majors. Since personal motivation is important in major selection, we should focus on increasing personal motivation for major selection by providing high school students with a wide range of opportunities, such as career experience and future work experience.

  • This study aimed to investigate the effect of science class using multiple intelligence on science learning motivation, academic achievement and science process skill of elementary student. The number of participants were 98, 4 classes of $3^{rd}$ graders in G elementary school in B city. The experimental group, 2 classes including 49 participants, had science classes using multiple intelligence while the comparative group, 2 classes including 49 participants, took ordinary teacher-driven lessons using teacher's guidebook. Pre and post tests were done before and after executing lessons to assess the changing in each group's science learning motivation, academic achievement and science process skill. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, the pre and post test results of science learning motivation revealed that the experimental group had higher improvement compared to the comparative group and the difference was meaningful. Second, the post test results of the science academic achievement showed that the experimental group had higher average value compared to the comparative group and the difference was meaningful. Third, the pre and post test results of basic science process skill showed that the experimental group had higher average value compared to the comparative group and the difference was meaningful, especially in inference and prediction elements.

  • This study examined different individual, family factors and classroom environment that affect children's perceived competency. For an analysis, achievement motivation, intrinsic locus of control and anxiety were included in individual variables. For family factors, parental support and marital conflict were examined. For classroom psycho-social environment, teacher support, peer relations, classroom involvement and teacher control were used. The sample consisted of 565 fifth and sixth grade children. Statistics and methods used for the data analysis were Cronbach's alpha, Factor analysis, frequency, percentage, t-test, Pearson's correlation, and Hierarchical Regression. Several major results were found from the analysis. First, boy's perceived academic competency was higher than girl's. And no sex difference was in children's social and athletic competency. Second, boy's and girl's perceived academic and social competency and boy's perceived athletic competency had a positive correlation with achievement motivation, intrinsic locus of control, parental support, teacher support, peer relations and classroom involvement. And girl's perceived athletic competency had a positive correlation with achievement motivation, intrinsic locus of control, parental support and peer relations. But boy's and girl's perceived academic and social competency and boy's perceived athletic competency had a negative correlation with anxiety and parental marital conflict. Third, the most important variable predicting boy's and girl's perceived academic competency was achievement motivation. The most important variable predicting boy's and girl's perceived social competency was peer relations. And the most important variable predicting boy's perceived athletic competency was peer relations. On the other hand, the most important variable predicting girl's perceived athletic competency was father's support.

  • This study aims to look into what influences a self-growth program has on morality and achievement motivation of adolescents on probation. As a result of the study, it was discovered that after the self-growth program, there was a statistically significant difference in interest in others(altruism) and their social devotion while there was no significant difference in the interest in self and social issues. Also, there was a statistically significant difference in future-orientation, confidence, a sense of responsibility, having a mind to face challenges, and task orientation while there was not a significant difference in having an adventurous mind. The results above indicate that the self-growth program has a significant influence on the morality and achievement motivation in adolescents on probation. Therefore, to enhance the morality and achievement motivation of adolescents, more organized research on self-growth programs is needed and their utilization should be improved.

  • This research was done in an effort to look into the influence on self-esteem and achievement motivation by putting the horticultural activity program into practice targeting the elementary school students in rural areas. This research conducted the program on the 4th graders of C elementary school located at a rural area in Gyeongnam by dividing them into an experimental group and control group for one session every week (3 hours each) for 12 weeks. First, it was found that the experimental group, which went through the horticultural activity program, improved in their self-esteem more than the control group and there appeared a statistically significant difference as well. In addition, the experimental group, as compared to the control group, was found to improve more in their achievement motivation and there appeared a statistically significant difference as well. Accordingly, this research was able to confirm that the horticultural activity program was effective in promoting the self-esteem and enhancing the achievement motivation of the elementary school students in rural areas.
