  • In this study, we investigated the effects of grouping with respect to the level of students' agreeableness on 6th graders' science achievement, self-efficacy, and science learning motivation in cooperative learning. Three classes (72 students) from an elementary school were randomly assigned to a control group and treatment groups. An agreeableness test, self-efficacy test, and science learning motivation test were administered as pretests. The students of the treatment groups were grouped either homogeneously or heterogeneously on the basis of their agreeableness levels and were taught with a cooperative learning strategy, whereas the students of the control group were randomly grouped and were taught with a traditional method. The cooperative learning intervention lasted for 5 weeks (16 class periods). After the instructions, tests regarding achievement, self-efficacy, and science learning motivation were administered as posttests. The results indicated that the students of the homogeneous and/or the heterogeneous groups significantly outperformed those of the control group in the achievement test. However, students' achievement was not influenced by the grouping method on the basis of students' agreeableness. No significantly differences among the groups were found in the self-efficacy and science learning motivation.

  • In this study, nations with high academic achievement but disparate affective achievement in science according to the results of the TIMSS 2007 were selected and students' responses in the main survey for affective properties from those nations were analyzed. In addition, Korean science teachers' perception of affective achievement and the properties of teaching and learning science was explored by an online survey. According to the results of the analysis of students' responses in the main survey, the percentage of those with high levels of confidence in, pleasure in, and value perception of science was large for Hong Kong, Singapore, and England but small for Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. When the properties of teaching and learning in actual science classes were observed in Korea, actual classes focused little on experimentation, research activities, and the context of everyday life. According to the results of surveys conducted on science teachers, students' low confidence in science was due to difficult and uninteresting curricula and the absolute lack of time to study science and their low interest in the subject was due to difficult curricula and the view that science was unrelated to their future academic or professional careers. In addition, according to the teachers, students' low value perception of science curricula was due to the fact that there was no need to excel in science for academic or professional careers and the idea that the subject was of no help to daily life.

  • Positive attitude toward mathematics is gaining bigger recognition as an important contributing factor to mathematical ability. As a strategy for strengthening affective domain and betterment of mathematics teaching and loaming, classifying students by their causes for liking or disliking mathematics can be an effective way In this study the author tried to devise methods to classify students by their types of math disliking and investigate correlations between mathematical achievements and these math-disliking types from a sample group of 8th graders. To identify the types of reasons why 8th graders dislike mathematics, a questionnaire with 30 items was made firstly. Then by applying the 'Factor analysis' of SPSS, the 30 items were divided into five partitions. Through abstraction of each partition, five math-disliking types, 'Competences', 'Basics', 'Confidences', 'Usefulness', and 'Teachers' were defined. They are expected to help teachers for describing each student's tendency of math-disliking. Further, correlation coefficients between mathematical achievements and each of the five math-disliking type were investigated against 4 groups which were made from sample group by the discrimination of gender and two levels (high and low) of mathematical achievements in cognitive area. As results, the following facts were found. (i) The trends of correlations between cognitive achievement and the five math disliking types were different across the 4 groups at statistically meaningful degrees. (ii) Most of the male students who had math-disliking types were proved to be in the low achievement level. But for the female students, only 50% of students who had math-disliking types were in the low achievement level. (iii) Compared to male students, higher portion of female students had math-disliking types despite their high achievement in cognitive area.

  • One of the main objectives of National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA), which is implemented by Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation(KICE), is to manage the qualities of National Curriculum. Thus we considered NAEA as the research for educational program assessment and tried to find out how to make NAEA better for achieving that objective. For the purpose of this paper we analyzed the present conditions of NAEA into four perspectives. And then according to each perspective we explored schemes for improving NAEA. In conclusion, we proposed the following; Firstly, in relation to assessing students' understanding of the mathematics contents, the meanings of Achievement Levels have to become much more clear and concrete. in relation to assessing for comparing student' understanding according to mathermatics content areas, the number of items has to be increased for elevating validities of NAEA. Thirdly, in relation to gathering the information about properties which are shown by the students in particular Achievement, it is necessary to think about how to produce items for the purpose in the step of developing items in NAEA. Finally in relation to collecting the data which can be useful for relevance of mathematics contents, it is necessary to make a special group of items for identifying relevance of mathematics contents, and to apply performance assessments on part of the students, not whole students.

  • TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) aims to produce reliable and internationally comparable indicators of student achievement. The TIMSS science achievement scale summarizes student performance on test items designed to measure a wide range of student knowledge and proficiency. This study analyzed Korean middle school students' science achievement at the advanced and high international benchmarks of the four benchmark levels of the benchmarks classified in TIMSS 2003 in light of science content areas (physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, and environmental science) and item characteristics. The average percent correct on items at the advanced benchmark by Korean students was highest in physics followed by earth science, biology, chemistry, and environmental science, whereas internationally the order was earth science, chemistry, biology, physics and lastly environmental science. Korean students performed relatively better in physics yet somewhat worse in chemistry than other top-performing countries. According to item analysis, Korean students reaching the advanced international benchmark understood some fundamentals of scientific investigation, but demonstrated weakness in written explanations of scientific principles, abstract science concept comprehension, and application of scientific concepts to solve quantitative problems. In addition, Korean students reaching the high international benchmark demonstrated relative weak conceptual understanding of ecology compared with other countries.

  • CRM (Customer relationship management) has become increasingly relevant in the public sector as citizens have become accustomed to high levels of service in private sectors. Public sectors have begun to emphasize on their customers and customer service quality. Thus to improve the service quality in citizens, public sectors conduct several types of surveys to analyze customer satisfaction and employee satisfaction on their product/services. Most of the public sector organizations, however, are reluctant to conduct the total survey targeting the whole teams and analyze the relationship among types of surveys because of the limitation of budget and time. In this paper, we propose the methodology to analyze the relationship of customer satisfaction index, employee satisfaction index and KPI achievement of whole teams and a framework which identifies key action initiatives and builds KPI.
