This paper presents the indirect boundary integral equation method(BIEM) to analyze 3D moving conductor problem. Instead of an artificial upwind algothm, the proposed method uses a fundamental Green's function which is a particular solution of diffusion equation. Therefore, this method yields a stable and accurate solution regardless of the Peclet number. The indirect BIEM is compared with 3D upwind FEM for a numerical model which has analytic solutions.

This paper presents the result of analysis of special orthotropic plates supported by elastic foundation and simple supported edges. Convergence and accuracy of the solution are examined and it is verified that the solution obtained is sufficiently accurate. The effect of the spring constant, k, on deflection is studied.
Having previously presented an article entitled "Further approximate optimum inspection intervals" in this Journal, here the author derives an alternative set of general explicit formulae using Cardan's solution to a cubic equation and presents a modified heuristic algorithm for solving Baker's model. The examples show that this new alternative approximate solution procedure for determining near optimum inspection intervals is as accurate and computationally efficient as the one suggested in the previous article. Through the examples, the author also indicates the relative merits and demerits of the two algorithms.

A numerical method using dual time stepping and preconditioning procedure for efficient computations of unsteady low speed compressible flow problems is developed. The time-derivative preconditioning method which is valid at low speed flow conditions cannot maintain temporal accuracy because of the modification of the time-derivative term in Navier-Stokes equations. The dual time stepping procedure is incorporated to enable the time accurate computations and this procedure introduces a pseudo-time derivative in addition to the physical time derivative. At a given physical time, an inner iteration can be carried out until a steady state in pseudo-time is achieved. This will effectively yield a time accurate solution. Computational capabilities of the above algorithm are demonstrated through computation of a variety of practical fluid flows and it is shown that the algorithms is efficient in the essentially incompressible flows and low Mach number compressible flows with heat source.

This paper presents an efficient and accurate method for nonlinear analysis of frame structures by idealized structural unit method. The main idea behind the present method is to minimize the cost of the computational effort by reducing the number of unknowns. An explicit form of the tangential elastic stiffness matrix of the element is derived by using updated Lagrangian approach. An ultimate limit state of the element is judged on the basis of the formation of a plastic hinge mechanism. The elasto-plastic stiffness matrix and the post-ultimate stiffness matrix of the element are formulated by plastic node method. A comparison between the present method is very efficient and accurate because the computing time required is very small while giving the accurate solution.
As software becomes more complex and its scope dramatically increases, the importance of research on developing methods for estimating software development efforts has been increased. Such accurate estimation has a prominent impact on the development projects. To develop accurate effort estimation models, many studies have been conducted among the academia and the practitioners. Out of the numerous methods, Constructive Cost Model (COCOMO) based on Line of Code (LOC), Regression Model based on Function Point (FP) were the most popular models in the past. As today's development environments are dynamically changing, these traditional methods do not work anymore. There is an impending need to develop an accurate estimation model which accommodates itself to the new environments. As a possible solution, this research proposes and evaluates an software development estimation model based on function points and neural networks.

In this Paper, we propose an accurate and stable solution of the transient electromagnetic response from three-dimensional arbitrarily shaped conducting objects by using a time domain magnetic field integral equation. This method does not utilize the conventional marching-on in time (MOT) solution. Instead we solve the time domain integral equation by expressing the transient behavior of the induced current in terms of temporal expansion functions with decaying exponential functions and Laguerre·polynomials. Since these temporal expansion functions converge to zero as time progresses, the transient response of the induced current does not have a late time oscillation and converges to zero unconditionally. To show the validity of the proposed method, we solve a time domain magnetic field integral equation for three closed conducting objects and compare the results of Mie solution and the inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT) of the solution obtained in the frequency domain.

Natural frequencies of the transνerse vibration of beams with step change in cross-section are obtained by using the asymptotic closed form solution. This closed form solution is found by using WKB method under the assumption of slowly varying properties, such as mass, cross-section, tension etc., along the beam length. However, this solution is found to be still very accurate even in the case of large variation in cross-section and tension. Therefore, this result can be easily applied to many engineering problems.

In this paper, a singularity problem of the state transition matrix is investigated in the spatial propagation when the spatial matrix differential equation is constructed via time finite element analysis. A parametric study shows that the degree of singularity of the state transition matrix depends on the degree of flexibility of the structures. As an alternative to avoid the numerical problems due to the singularity, an analytic solution fur spatial propagation of the flexible structures is proposed. In the proposed method, the spatial properties of the structure are analytically expressed by a combination of transcendental functions. The analytic solution serves fast and accurate results by eliminating the possibility of the error accumulation caused by the boundary condition. Several numerical examples are shown to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.
In this research, an approximate analytical solution has been presented for nonlinear problems of vibratory systems in mechanical engineering. The new method is called Variational Approach (VA) which is applied in two different high nonlinear cases. It has been shown that the presented approach leads us to an accurate approximate analytical solution. The results of variational approach are compared with numerical solutions. The full procedure of the numerical solution is also presented. The results are shown that the variatioanl approach can be an efficient and practical mathematical tool in field of nonlinear vibration.
