This study investigates the effect of a protective layer on the level of carbonation resistance of concrete. For the protective layer, a PE film, bubble sheets, double layered bubble sheets and styroform were placed in a mold before placing the concrete. In addition, PE film was retrofitted by attaching on the surface of the substrate concrete with a glue. Results showed that the carbonation depths of the control concrete were 4.6 mm and 5.2 mm at one week and two weeks exposure in an accelerated carbonation chamber, whereas the concrete with all types of protective layer except PE flim did not allow the ingress of carbon dioxide during the same period.
MgO recently has been regarded as the alternative material for replacement of cement. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of accelerated carbonation on the strength development of MgO-based binder which is binary mixtures of magnesium oxide (MgO) with portland cement (PC) or ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) or fly ash (FA). The compressive strengths of all binders were higher in the 20% $CO_2$ condition and for longer curing time. The strength were generally higher as the following order: MgO/PC > MgO/GGBS > MgO/FA system. The binder composed of 20% MgO and 80% PC showed highest compressive strength (38.0MPa) which was higher than PC. The correlation analysis of the porosity and compressive strength showed that compressive strength was higher when porosity was lower. The hydration and carbonation products of MgO including brucite ($Ca(OH)_2$), magnesite ($MgCO_3$) and nesquehonite ($MgCO_3{\cdot}3H_2O$) presumably filled the pores and contributed to strength development. Thermogravimetric analyses elucidated that 0.34 kg of $CO_2$ could be stored the 50% MgO/50% PC binder which performed the maximum $CO_2$ uptake at 20% $CO_2$ condition.
Currently, CO2 existed in the air usually reacts concrete, and then CaCO3 can be appeared. As time goes by, pH of concrete is decreased and corrosion of steel can be happened. This phenomenon is called carbonation. For preventing carbonation of concrete, various methods like using corrosion inhibitor, high compressive strength concrete, and enough covering depth are adopted. But these method are usually passive methods focused on corrosion of steel and have limitation on economic. Thus, as basic study for active method of carbonation, cement pastes with CO2 reactive material (γ-C2S, MgO) and GBFS were in accelerated carbonation, and the compressive strengths were measured. On the result, the compressive strength was improved better than non-carbonation. Through measuring the weight change using TG-DTA, as specimens were carbonated, according to decreasing of Ca(OH)2 and Mg(OH)2, CaCO3 and MgCO3 were increased. Therefore it can be shown that carbonation curing can be realized.
Usually, carbonation of concrete causes pH reduction and corrosion of steel, it leads to decrease of durability. However, CaCO3, as results of reaction with hydrates products and CO2, can contribute to improvement of compressive strength. Based on this theory, using carbonation depth, the researches about CO2 absorption of plain concrete and concrete containing CO2 reactive materials has been performed. But, the researches has limitation about using one material, therefore, for this study, considering various CO2 reactive materials, experiment has been proceeded. With water to binder ratio 50%, after initial curing for 2days, accelerated carbonation was performed for 28days, and carbonation depth and compressive strength were measured. As results of carbonation depth, specimen containing desulfurized slag, zeolite showed the highest CO2 absorption, in case of compressive strength, specimens with MgO were indicated as highest compressive strength.
The carbonation process is affected by both the concrete material properties such as W/C ratio, types of cement and aggregates, admixture characteristics and the environmental factors such as $CO_2$ concentration, temperature, humidity. Based on results of preliminary study on carbonation, this study is to develop a carbonation prediction model by taking account of $CO_2$ concentration, temperature, humidity ad W/C ratio among major factor affecting the carbonation process. And to constitute a model formula which correspond to the mix design of the nuclear power plant, test coefficient that correspond to the design of the nuclear power plant is obtained based on the results of accelerated carbonation test. Also a field coefficient which is obtained based on results of the field examination is included to improve the conformity of the actual structures of nuclear power plant.
More underground structures are increasingly being constructed such as box culverts for electric power transmission, and the life extension of these structures is very important. It is well known that the steel embedded in concrete is usually invulnerable to corrosion because the high alkalinity of the pore solution in concrete generates a thin protective oxide layer on the surface of the steel. Recent observations in the field and experimental evidence have shown that even steel in concrete can be corroded through the carbonation reaction of cover concrete. Carbonation-induced corrosion in concrete may often occur in a high carbon dioxide environment. In this study, the risk of carbonation of underground box culverts in Korea was evaluated by measuring the car¬bonation rate and concrete cover depth in the field. Then, the carbonation-free service life for the cover depth of the steel was calcu¬lated with in situ information and Monte Carlo simulation. Additionally, an accelerated carbonation test for a cracked beam specimen was performed, and the effect of a crack on the service life of a box culvert was numerically investigated with Monte Carlo simulation based on experimental results.
Environmental load reduction and sustainable development one of the study's research into the available material is discharged, remove the coarse aggregate and fine aggregate from waste concrete and utilizing the remaining cement fine powder as an alternative raw material for limestone is the main raw material of cement developing playback cement that was the purpose. Physical over existing research and chemical quality was confirmed was evaluated for durability by promoting carbonation test, research studies on the durability evaluation insignificant. As honipyul within the aggregate differential lung fine powder increases carbonation resistance performance've found that increased sharply and, S0 showed fairly similar to the OPC. Therefore, the development within the technology research to separate fine aggregate discharge fully differential and waste fine powder is determined to be the development and use of the playback durability of the cement with the carbonation levels corresponding to the OPC if made.
Recently, reinforced concrete structures exposed to severe enviroment are increased in metropolitan area. The acid rain and CO2 penetrated towad rebar, thus rebar corrosion occurred. The corrosion of rebar in concrete is, as in most corrosion processes, an electrochemical nature. The corrosion may severely affect on durability and service life of such a concrete structures. This study was performed for the purpose of acquiring data about corrosion condition and considering a countermeasure to prevent rebar from corroding due to carbonation of concrete. An accelerated car bonation testing procedure was applied to measure the evolution of carbonation and rebar corrosion with time for various water-binder ratios and cement types.
The purpose of this study is to suggest the fundamental data of durability which effects on the Carbonation of concrete by adding various admixture additives. Thus, We have experimented the accelerated test on the concrete blending which was admixed by blast furnace slag, fly-ash, silica fume , durability amelioration and it was cured 7weeks after twenty eight days water curing. The result of this experiment is that Carbonation speed increased extremely when water cement ratio went up, and by growing of replace cement ratio of admixture additives. The specimen which was added fly-ash, blast furnace slag, silica fume has the faster Carbonation speed than the specimen which was not added admixture additives. All of these specimen, fly-ash has the fastest progress speed.
