  • This paper analyzed the current level of the middle school academic achievement in Changwon City and explored the ways for improving academic achievement of the middle school in Changwon City. The data used in the analysis were the results of National Assessment of Educational Achievement of middle school students from 2013 to 2016 which was released on the school's information website(www.schoolinfo.go.kr) First, the analysis found that the academic achievement level of the middle school in Changwon City was not higher than those of Gwangju, Daejeon, and Ulsan, where the population size is similar. Second, the level of academic achievement among middle schools in Changwon City differed by year. Third, the level of academic achievement of middle school in Changwon City differed by district. Fourth, the educational achievement gap among middle schools in Changwon City existed by public and private school, as well as by male school, female school, and male and female Middle School. The paper suggested that schools with low ratio of proficient and above achievement levels should look for ways to raise the percentage of proficient and above achievement levels, and schools with higher rates of below basic achievement should make efforts to solve the problem.

  • This study attempted to understand the mediating effect of learning time in the effect of academic burnout on self-esteem of middle school students. To this end, a survey of 1,045 middle school students in Gyeongsangnam-do was conducted on academic burnout, learning time, and self-esteem. It was analyzed in four ways through questionnaire responses. First, as a result of analyzing the differences according to the collective characteristics of academic burnout, learning time, and self-esteem, there was no difference between groups, and self-esteem was significantly different by gender and grade. Second, as a result of correlation analysis, academic burnout and learning time showed a negative correlation with self-esteem, and learning time and self-esteem showed a positive correlation. Third, as a result of regression analysis, all learning times were partially mediated in the effect of academic burnout on self-esteem. This not only directly affects the self-esteem of middle school students, but also indirectly through learning time. Fourth, in the analysis by gender, it was confirmed that male students had no statistically significant effect on self-esteem, but female students had a significant statistical effect on self-esteem, so only female students had a partial mediating effect. As a result of the analysis by grade, the effect of learning time on self-esteem was significant in the 1st and 2nd graders of middle school, but the effect of learning time on self-esteem was not significant in the 3rd graders of middle school. Through the survey of this study, it was suggested that education and counseling should be conducted in the middle school period, which is a rapid growth period, considering that academic burnout has a different effect on learning time and self-esteem by grade as well as gender approach.

  • This study attempted to find out whether learning time has a mediating effect according to the gender, region, and grade of middle school students in the relationship between academic engagement and self-esteem. To this end, a survey of 1,045 middle school students in Gyeongsangnam-do was conducted on academic engagement, learning time, and self-esteem. Difference verification was conducted to determine the difference in academic engagement, learning time, and self-esteem according to the general characteristics of the study subjects, correlation analysis was conducted to determine the correlation between major variables, and regression analysis was conducted to verify the mediating effect of learning time. As a result of the analysis, first, there was no difference in the academic engagement of middle school students by group. In the learning time, middle school students in the city area were significantly higher than those in the township area, male students had higher self-esteem than female students, and students in the city area had significantly higher self-esteem as the grade went up. Second, as a result of correlation analysis, learning time, academic engagement, and self-esteem showed a positive correlation. Third, in the entire group not divided by group, both the direct path through which academic engagement reaches self-esteem and the partial mediating model from learning time to self-esteem showed significant effects. In the analysis by gender, only female students excluding male students showed a partial mediating effect, and the analysis results by region showed a partial mediating effect only on students in the city. The analysis results by grade showed a partial mediating effect only for second-year middle school students. In order to improve the self-esteem of middle school students, education and counseling should be conducted in consideration of not only individual differences by gender and grade, but also the region in which they live.

  • This study analyzes the past and present of service science research as a central discipline that will lead a new economy and society, and presents a guide for future research. In the 21st century, service research has developed into a new discipline that is different from the existing service studies. Service science is a discipline that collectively refers to all research related to services. This study analyzes this development process and suggests the direction of future service science research. First, we analyze the research before the birth of service science, an early model of service studies. And the early research on the birth of service science is analyzed. Through this process, the service science framework that expanded and developed the initial service science is analyzed. We introduce each field of service science, which is a new innovation of the existing academic system from a modern perspective, and analyzes the structure of the service philosophy that is the basis of independent academic fields. And we suggest the future direction of service science research. The direction of paradigm innovation research of existing individual disciplines is presented first. As an example, innovation from existing business administration to service business administration is introduced. We also suggest a new economic and social system research direction that requires the convergence of multiple academic fields. Finally, we present a direction for multidimensional, broad-based convergence research. We suggest that the future of service science can be the process of reverting back to integration and convergence, centered on humans and the world, of the disciplines that have continued to diverge in the history. We present a model in which all disciplines are reintegrated into service science as the Eastern and Western spirits converge.

  • As many existing research fields are matured academically, researchers have encountered numbers of academic, social and other problems that cannot be addressed by internal knowledge and methodologies of existing disciplines. Earlier, pioneers of researchers thus are following a new paradigm that breaks the boundaries between the prior disciplines, fuses them and seeks new approaches. Moreover, developed countries including Korea are actively supporting and fostering the convergence research at the national level. Nevertheless, there is insufficient research to analyze convergence trends in national R&D support projects and what kind of content the projects mainly deal with. This study, therefore, collected and preprocessed the research proposal data of National Research Foundation of Korea, transforming the proposal documents to term-frequency matrices. Based on the matrices, this study derived detailed research topics through Latent Dirichlet Allocation, a kind of topic modeling algorithm. Next, this study identified the research topics each proposal mainly deals with, visualized the convergence relationships, and quantitatively analyze them. Specifically, this study analyzed the centralities of the detailed research topics to derive clues about the convergence of the near future, in addition to visualizing the convergence relationship and analyzing time-varying number of research proposals per each topic. The results of this study can provide specific insights on the research direction to researchers and monitor domestic convergence R&D trends by year.
