  • The nonuniformity of energy absorption capability of ZnO varistor is systematically discussed in this paper. The nonuniformity of electrical characteristics and microstructure leads to decrease the energy absorption capability of ZnO varistor. The energy absorption capabilities were measured under different current waves, the experimental results stated that they have highly scattered phenomena. The influences of varistor surface area and nonuniformity of electrical characteristics to the energy absorption capability and the nonuniformity of commercial ZnO varistors were analyzed. There is a high nonuniformity existing in the energy absorption capability of commercial ZnO varistors.

  • Many small and medium-sized enterprises are deploying Smart Factory without due consideration of the circumstances in which the entity is in or outside of the entity, such as environmental changes and the capabilities of its members. Therefore, utilization and effectiveness are also low after deployment. This study verifies 'the establishment of a Smart Factory through the environmental factors and absorption capabilities of small businesses' through empirical research. The survey was received by people working for small and medium-sized companies that have established Smart Factory. The results of the study showed that first, environmental factors within and outside the company had a positive effect on the absorption capacity within the company. Second, the absorption capacity within a company has had a positive effect on the deployment of a Smart Factory. Based on the above proof, it has been proved to be effective if the core areas of the Smart Factory are built on the basis of the company's internal and external environmental factors and absorption capabilities when constructing Smart Factory in small businesses. In the future, we will study the achievements of smart factory construction.

  • This paper presents the effects of high temperature and water absorption on the mechanical behaviors of carbon-aramid fiber composites, specifically their strength, elastic modulus, and fracture. These composites are used in industrial structures because of their high specific strength and toughness. Carbon fiber composites are vulnerable to the impact force of external objects despite their excellent properties. Aramid fibers have high elongation and impact absorption capabilities. Accordingly, a hybrid composite with the complementary properties and capabilities of carbon and aramid fibers is fabricated. However, the exposure of aramid fiber to water or heat typically deteriorates its mechanical properties. In view of this, tensile and flexural tests were conducted on a twill woven carbon-aramid fiber hybrid composite to investigate the effects of high temperature and water absorption. Moreover, a multiscale analysis of the stress behavior of the composite's microstructure was implemented. The results show that the elastic modulus of composites subjected to high temperature and water absorption treatments decreased by approximately 22% and 34%, respectively, compared with that of the composite under normal conditions. The crack behavior of the composites was well identified under the specimen conditions.

  • This paper employs the lens of the resource-based view(RBV) to investigate how firms create competitive advantages through IS outsourcing arrangements. The RBV framework is used to explore how a firm adds value and reaps benefits from IS outsourcing arrangements. The primary finding is that in the process of value creation, the 'absorption' of the managerial and technical capabilities of external vendors is critical. When the client firm is able to absorb and integrate the IT capabilities of outsourcing vendors, these absorbed capabilities in turn become the source of IT competence and competitive advantages $vis-\grave{a}-vis$ the competition.

  • In this study, the energy absorption capabilities and failure modes of four different kinds of circular tubes made of carbon, Kevlar and carbon-Kevlar hybrid composites with epoxy resin have been evaluated. In order to achieve these goals, these tubes were fabricated with unidirectional prepregs and compressive tests were conducted for the tubes under 10mm/min loading speed. From the test results, carbon/epoxy tubes were collapsed by brittle fracturing mode and showed the best energy absorption capabilities, while Kevlar/epoxy tubes were crushed by local buckling mode and worst. The hybrid [$90_C/0_K$] tubes were failed in a local bucking mode and showed good post crushing integrity, whereas [$90_K/0_C$] tubes were failed in a lamina bending mode and bad post crushing integrity.

  • A process design was performed for a removal of acid gases using membrane-absorption hybrid system in LNG-FPSO. Commercial process simulator Promax version 4.0 was utilized for comparing acid gases removal capabilities of amine absorption process and hybrid process. Simulation results show hybrid process could be small amine solvent circulate rate, energy consumption, equipment sizing compared to typical amine absorption process. As a result, hybrid process which is small footprint and energy saving process may be a good solution for the pre-treatment of natural gas in LNG-FPSO.

  • In this paper, vibration and energy absorption characteristics of a nanostructure which is composed of two embedded porous annular/circular nanoplates coupled by a viscoelastic substrate are investigated. The modified couple stress theory (MCST) and the Gurtin-Murdoch theory are applied to take into account the size and the surface effects, respectively. Furthermore, the structural damping effect is probed by the Kelvin-Voigt model and the mathematical model of the problem is developed by a new hyperbolic higher order shear deformation theory. The differential quadrature method (DQM) is employed to obtain the out-of-phase and in-phase frequencies of the structure in order to predict the dynamic response of it. The acquired results reveal that the vibration and energy absorption of the system depends on some factors such as porosity, surface stress effects, material length scale parameter, damping and spring constants of the viscoelastic foundation as well as geometrical parameters of annular/circular nanoplates. A bird's-eye view of the findings in the research paper offers a comprehensive understanding of the vibrational behavior and energy absorption capabilities of annular/circular porous nanoplates. The multidisciplinary approach and the inclusion of porosity make this study valuable for the development of innovative materials and applications in the field of nanoscience and engineering.

  • Sound absorption capability and anatomical features of the organosolv pretreated Japanese larch and yellow poplar wood were estimated by stereoscopic observation and two microphone transfer function method. Sound absorption capabilities of organosolv treated wood, in the entire estimated frequency range (50~6,400 Hz), were higher than those of control specimen. Especially, the treated wood's absorption capabilities measured in the frequency range of 2~4 kHz were about two times higher than those of control specimen. By the organosolv pretreatment (at $70{\sim}120^{\circ}C$), the weight loss of wood occurred in less than 1% of total weight of wood and the porosity of wood increased slightly. In addition, it was presupposed that microstructural changes of wood occurred during organosolv pretreatment and this structural changes cause the increasing of the sound absorption capability of wood.

  • Energy absorption capabilities and failure modes of circular tubes made of glass/epoxy with two trigger mechanisms were evaluated. Three types of glass/epoxy tubes were fabricated using a hand lay-up method with unidirectional and woven fabric prepregs tapes, and a filament winding method. The one end of the fabricated tubes was machined for the bevel trigger and tulip trigger. Then, crush tests were conducted at 10 mm/min loading speed, wherein the glass/epoxy tubes were crushed by a brittle fracturing mode combined with fragmentation and lamina-splaying modes. The UD glass/epoxy tubes with a bevel trigger and the filament winded tubes with a tulip trigger showed the maximum and minimum specific energy absorptions, respectively, with a difference of 9.3%. The tube with a tulip trigger exhibited a maximum reduction of 5.7% in the initial peak load; the tube with a bevel trigger showed a maximum increase of 2.9% in the specific energy absorption.

  • In viewing R&D as a series of activities of problem solving in the course of technological learning in developing countries, national R&D is very likely to play an pivotal role in incubating and improving industrial technology and competitiveness, especially for S&T-intensive industries, such as nuclear fuel industry. To this end, the national R&D needs to be primarily designed to reinforce technological capabilities of the country including government research institutes (GRIs), industrial firms, etc., from the initial stage of absorption as well as at the innovation stage. Based on this strategic role, national R&D performed by GRIs should provide scientific knowledge and core technologies which are required for the absorbption of foreign technology and development of indigenous technological capabilities with which domestic technological efforts are made to successfully achieve not only technological imitation but also innovation in global sense.
