  • With the ever-increasing height of timber buildings, the complexity of timber as a structural material gives rise to behaviors not previously studied by engineers. An urgent call is needed regarding their performance in damage scenarios: activating alternative load paths in tall timber buildings is not the same as in tall buildings made with steel and concrete. In this paper we propose a robustness framework covering all building materials, whose application in timber may lead to new conceptual designs for the next generation of tall timber buildings. Qualitatively, the importance of building scale and the distinction between localized and systematic exposures are discussed, and how existing supertall structures can be an example for future generations of tall timber buildings. Quantitatively, the robustness index is introduced alongside a method to calculate the performance of a given building regarding robustness, in order to find the most cost-effective structural solutions for improved robustness. A three-level application recommendation is made, depending on the importance of the building in question. Primarily, the paper highlights the importance of conceptual design to achieve structural robustness and encourages the practicing engineering community to use the proposed framework to quantitatively come up with the new generation of tall timber buildings.

  • An enhanced and efficient methodology is proposed for evaluating the robustness of an uncertain structure with passive dampers. Although the structural performance for seismic loads is an important design criterion in earthquake-prone countries, the structural parameters such as storey stiffnesses and damping coefficients of passive dampers are uncertain due to various factors or sources, e.g. initial manufacturing errors, material deterioration, temperature dependence. The concept of robust building design under such uncertain structural-parameter environment may be one of the most challenging issues to be tackled recently. By applying the proposed method of interval analysis and robustness evaluation for predicting the response variability accurately, the robustness of a passively controlled structure can be evaluated efficiently in terms of the so-called robustness function. An application is presented of the robustness function to the design and evaluation of passive damper systems.

  • In this paper, the robustness property of 2nd-order iterative learning control(ILC) method for a class of linear and nonlinear discrete-time dynamic systems is studied. 2nd-order ILC method has the PD-type learning algorithm based on both time-domain performance and iteration-domain performance. It is proved that the 2nd-order ILC method has robustness in the presence of state disturbances, measurement noise and initial state error. In the absence of state disturbances, measurement noise and initialization error, the convergence of the 2nd-order ILC algorithm is guaranteed. A numerical example is given to show the robustness and convergence property according to the learning parameters.

  • LQ-servo design procedure introduced by Athans is a method using a partial states feedback and an output feedback in order to improve the poor performance robustness of the LQR as well as to maintain its stability robustness. Although the method guarantees good stability robustness, it is not effective in performance robustness as it does not match the singular value at low or high frequencies of the transfer matrix obtained by breaking at the plant output. This paper intends propose of a new method, using the limited behaviour of the control gain introduced by Kwakernaak and Sivan, in order to improve it does it refer to controlga introduced by kwakernaak or the new metho Anblguouls.

  • In this paper, we analysize the noise robustness of MLPs(Multilayer perceptrons). Also, as a preprocessing stage of MLPs to improve noise robustness, we consider the ICA(independent component analysis) and PCA(principle component analysis). After analyzing the noise redunction effect using PCA or ICA, we verify the noise robustness of MLPs through handwritten-digit recognition simulations.

  • Today, AI(Artificial Intelligence) technology is being extensively researched in various fields, including the field of malware detection. To introduce AI systems into roles that protect important decisions and resources, it must be a reliable AI model. AI model that dependent on training dataset should be verified to be robust against new attacks. Rather than generating new malware detection, attackers find malware detection that succeed in attacking by mass-producing strains of previously detected malware detection. Most of the attacks, such as adversarial attacks, that lead to misclassification of AI models, are made by slightly modifying past attacks. Robust models that can be defended against these variants is needed, and the Robustness level of the model cannot be evaluated with accuracy and recall, which are widely used as AI evaluation indicators. In this paper, we experiment a framework to evaluate robustness level by generating an adversarial sample based on one of the adversarial attacks, C&W attack, and to improve robustness level through adversarial training. Through experiments based on malware dataset in this study, the limitations and possibilities of the proposed method in the field of malware detection were confirmed.

  • In this paper, a new ESD protection device is proposed to improve the trigger voltage and robustness. The HHVSCR and the proposed device were compared to verify the trigger voltage, the holding voltage and the robustness. The gate length was modified to verify the electrical characteristics. The trigger voltage, the holding voltage and the robustness were certified by comparing the proposed device and the stacking structure.

  • The concept of robust optimization is based on Taguchi's method. Especially, robustness indices of objective function pursue an insensitive and conservative design when there are variations on design variables and parameters. To accomplish the purpose, various robustness indices on the objective function have been developed. However, it can be caused limitations to develop the robustness index, because there is difference between the Taguchi's method and robust optimization. In this paper, an investigation is performed to identify the characteristics and the drawbacks of the previous studies. To achieve the purpose, evaluations are conducted by using the examples which have both a deterministic optimum and a robust optimum. Moreover, a new viewpoint as well as a robustness index using a supremum value of the objective function is proposed based on the investigation.

  • Disproportionate collapse triggered by local structural failure may cause huge casualties and economic losses, being one of the most critical civil engineering incidents. It is generally recognized that ensuring robustness of a structure, defined as its insensitivity to local failure, is the most acceptable and effective method to arrest disproportionate collapse. To date, the concept of robustness in its definition and quantification is still an issue of controversy. This paper presents a detailed review on about 50 quantitative measures of robustness for building structures, being classified into structural attribute-based and structural performance-based measures (deterministic and probabilistic). The definition of robustness is first described and distinguished from that of collapse resistance, vulnerability and redundancy. The review shows that deterministic measures predominate in quantifying structural robustness by comparing the structural responses of an intact and damaged structure. The attribute-based measures based on structural topology and stiffness are only applicable to elastic state of simple structural forms while the probabilistic measures receive growing interest by accounting for uncertainties in abnormal events, local failure, structural system and failure-induced consequences, which can be used for decision-making tools. There is still a lack of generalized quantifications of robustness, which should be derived based on the definition and design objectives and on the response of a structure to local damage as well as the associated consequences of collapse. Critical issues and recommendations for future design and research on quantification of robustness are provided from the views of column removal scenarios, types of structures, regularity of structural layouts, collapse modes, numerical methods, multiple hazards, degrees of robustness, partial damage of components, acceptable design criteria.

  • Some sections of the highway are closed due to disasters and accidents. In this situation, it analyzes what kind of situation occurs due to functional failure in the highway network. The domestic highway network can be expressed as a graph. Blocking some sections of the highway can turn into a national disaster. In this paper, we analyze the robustness of the domestic highway network. The robustness of expressways refers to the degree to which the traffic conditions of the domestic expressway network deteriorate due to the blockage of some sections. The greater the robustness, the smaller the effect of some blocking appears. This study is used to evaluate the congestion level of one section of the transportation network, and a value obtained by dividing the section traffic volume (V) by the section traffic volume (C) is used. This study analyzes the robustness of highways by using the actual traffic volume data of the departure and arrival points of domestic highways, and analyzes the changes in traffic volume due to partial blockage through experimental calculations. Although this analysis cannot reflect the exact reality of domestic highways, it is judged to be sufficient for the purpose of confirming the basic robustness of the overall network.
