A new method identifies coupled fluid-structure system with a reduced set of state variables is presented. Assuming that the structural model is known a priori either from an analysis or a test and using linear transformations between structural and aeroelastic states, it is possible to deduce aerodynamic information from sampled time histories of the aeroelastic system. More specifically given a finite set of structural modes the method extracts generalized aerodynamic force matrix corresponding to these mode shapes. Once the aerodynamic forces are known, an aeroelastic reduced-order model can be constructed in discrete-time, state-space format by coupling the structural model and the aerodynamic system. The resulting reduced-order model is suitable for constant Mach, varying density analysis.
This article coined a general class of estimators for various measures in normal population when some' a priori' or guessed value of standard deviation a is available in addition to sample information. The class of estimators is primarily defined for a function of standard deviation. An unbiased estimator and the minimum mean squared error estimator are worked out and the suggested class of estimators is compared with these classical estimators. Numerical computations in terms of percent relative efficiency and absolute relative bias established the merits of the proposed class of estimators especially for small samples. Simulation study confirms the excellence of the proposed class of estimators. The beauty of this article lies in estimation of various measures like standard deviation, variance, Fisher information, precision of sample mean, process capability index $C_{p}$, fourth moment about mean, mean deviation about mean etc. as particular cases of the proposed class of estimators.
In this study, a model-referenced underwater navigation algorithm is proposed for high-precise underwater navigation using monocular vision near underwater structures. The main idea of this navigation algorithm is that a 3D model-based pose estimation is combined with the inertial navigation using an extended Kalman filter (EKF). The spatial information obtained from the navigation algorithm is utilized for enabling the underwater robot to navigate near underwater structures whose geometric models are known a priori. For investigating the performance of the proposed approach the model-referenced navigation algorithm was applied to an underwater robot and a set of experiments was carried out in a water tank.

This paper proposes a robot visual servo approach based on image appearance and a wavelet function neural network. The inputs of the wavelet neural network are changes of image features or the elements of image appearance vector, and the outputs are changes of robot joint angles. Image appearance vector is calculated by using eigen subspace transform algorithm. The proposed approach does not need a priori knowledge of the robot kinematics, hand-eye geometry and camera models. The experiment results on a real robot system show that the proposed method is practical and simple.
We present a simple method to determine the focal distances of lenses with the Talbot self-images. This method uses only one grating, and a priori knowledge of the period of the grating is replaced with a linear relation between the (de)magnified periods of the Talbot images and the lens-to-grating distance. A thick lens whose effective focal length is 500 mm was used to validate the method, and the focal distance of the converging beam was determined with the difference of 0.15% for the nominal focal distance of 521.9 mm. The determined period of the grating with the difference of 0.2% also supports the validation.

Modern engineering design problems involve complexity of disciplinary coupling and difficulty of problem formulation. Multidisciplinary design optimization can overcome the complexity and design optimization software or frameworks can lessen the difficulty. Recently, a growing number of new multidisciplinary design optimization techniques have been proposed. However, each technique has its own pros and cons and it is hard to predict a priori which technique is more efficient than others for a specific problem. In this study, a software system has been developed to directly solve MDO problems with minimal input required. Since the system is based on MATLAB, it can exploit the optimization toolbox which is already developed and proven to be effective and robust. The framework is devised to change an MDO technique to another as the optimization goes on and it is called a reconfigurable MDO framework. Several numerical examples are shown to prove the validity of the reconfiguration idea and its effectiveness.

In this paper, we propose the concept of orthonormalized compressed measurement for the stability analysis of discrete linear time-varying Kalman filters. Unlike previous studies that deal with the homogeneous portion of Kalman filters, the proposed Lyapunov method directly deals with the stochastically-driven system. The orthonorrmalized compressed measurement provides information on the a priori state estimate of the Kalman filter at the k-th step that is propagated from the a posteriori state estimate at the previous block of time. Since the complex multiple-step propagations of a candidate Lyapunov function with process and measurement noises can be simplified to a one-step Lyapunov propagation by the orthonormalized compressed measurement, a stochastic radius of attraction can be derived that would be impractically difficult to obtain by the conventional multiple-step Lyapunov method.
In design of the friction clutches of automobiles, knowledge on the thermo-elasticity a priori is very informative in the initial design stage. Especially, the precise prediction technique of maximum temperature and stress should be requested in design of mechanical clutches for their durability and compactness. In this study, an efficient and reliable analysis technique for the design of the mechanical clutches by using computer modeling and numerical method was developed. A commercial software STAR-$CD^{TM}$ was used to find the convective heat-transfer coefficients. MSC/$NASTRAN^{TM}$ software was followed to predict the temperature of clutch with utilization of estimated coefficients. Some experiments were also performed with a dynamometer to verify the procedure and calibrate the thermal load. As a conclusion, a design procedure, including numerical steps and experimental techniques for calibration, was proposed.

Navigation in environments that are densely cluttered with obstacles is still a challenge for Autonomous Ground Vehicles (AGVs), especially when the configuration of obstacles is not known a priori. Reactive local navigation schemes that tightly couple the robot actions to the sensor information have proved to be effective in these environments, and because of the environmental uncertainties, STSF(Space and Time Sensor Fusion)-based fuzzy behavior systems have been proposed. Realization of autonomous behavior in mobile robots, using STSF control based on spatial data fusion, requires formulation of rules which are collectively responsible for necessary levels of intelligence. This collection of rules can be conveniently decomposed and efficiently implemented as a hierarchy of fuzzy-behaviors. This paper describes how this can be done using a behavior-based architecture. The approach is motivated by ethological models which suggest hierarchical organizations of behavior. Experimental results show that the proposed method can smoothly and effectively guide a robot through cluttered environments such as dense forests.
This paper describes the design of a robust adaptive neural-net(NN) observer for uncertain nonlinear dynamical system. The Lyapunov synthesis approach is used to guarantee a uniform ultimate boundedness property of the state estimation error, as well as of all other signals in the closed-loop system. Especially, for reducing the dynamic oder of the observer, we propose a new method in which no strictly positive real(SPR) condition is needed with on-line estimation of weights of the NNs. No a priori knowledge of an upper bounds on the uncertain terms is required. The theoretical results are illustrated through a simulation example.
