A high-order accurate Euler flow solver based on a discontinuous Galerkin finite-element method has been developed for the numerical simulations of blade-vortex interaction phenomena on unstructured meshes. A free vortex in freestream was investigated to assess the vortex-preserving property and the accuracy of the present flow solver. Blade-vortex interaction problems in subsonic and transonic freestreams were simulated by adopting a multi-level solution-adaptive dynamic mesh refinement/coarsening technique. The results were compared with those of other numerical and experimental methods. It was shown that the present discontinuous Galerkin flow solver can preserve the vortex structure for significantly longer vortex convection time and can accurately capture the complex unsteady blade-vortex interaction flows, including generation and propagation of acoustic waves.
The three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations have been solved by a node-centered finite volume method with unstructured hybrid grids. The pressure-velocity coupling is handled by the artificial compressibility algorithm and convective fluxes are obtained by Roe's flux difference splitting scheme with linear reconstruction of the solutions. Euler implicit method with Jacobi matrix solver is used for the time-integration. The viscous terms are discretised in a manner to handle any kind of grids such as tetragedra, prisms, pyramids, hexahedra, or mixed-element grid. Inviscid bump flow is solved to check the accuracy of high order convective flux discretisation. And viscous flows around a circular cylinder and a sphere are studied to show the efficiency and accuracy of the solver.

The device simulator (BANDIS) which can analyze efficiently the electrical characteristics of the semiconductor devices under the three dimensional stationary conditions on the IBM PC was developed. Poisson, electon and hole continuity equations are discretized y te galerkin method using a tetrahedron as af finite element. The frontal solver which has exquisite data structures and advanced input/output functions is dused for the matrix solver which needs the highest cost in the three dimensional device simulation. The discretization method of the continuity equations used in BANDIS are compared with that of the scharfetter-gummel method used in the commercial three-dimensional device. To verify an accuracy and the efficiency of the discretization method, the simulation results of the PN junction diode and the BJT from BANDIS are compared with those of the commercial three-dimensiional device simulator such as DAVINCI. The maximum relative error within 2% and the average number of iterations needed for the convergence is decreased by more than 20%. The total simulation time of the BJT with 25542 nodes is decreased to about 60% compared with that of DAVINCI.
It is well known that the quality and efficiency of the design of metal forming processes can be significantly improved with the aid of effective numerical simulations. In the present study, a two-and three-dimensional finite element simulation system, CAMP form, was developed for the analysis of metal forming processes in the PC environment. It is composed of a solver based on the thermo-rigid-viscoplastic approach and graphic user interface (GUI) based pre-and post-processors to be used for the effective description of forming conditions and graphic display of simulation results, respectively. In particular, in the case of CAMPform 2D (two-dimensional), as the solver contains an automatic remeshing module which determines the deformation step when remeshing is required and reconstructs the new mesh system, it is possible to carry out simulations automatically without any user intervention. Also, the forming analysis considers ductile fracture of the workpiece and wear of dies for better usage of the system. In the case of CAMPform 3D, general three-dimensional problems that involve complex die geometries and require remeshing can be analyzed, but full automation of simulations has yet to be achieved. In this paper, the overall structure and computational background of CAMPform will be briefly explained and analysis results of several forming processes will be shown. From the current results, it is construed that CAMPform can be used in providing useful information to assist the design of forming processes.

We consider the interface between the parallel distributed memory multifrontal solver and the finite element method. We give in detail the requirement and the data structure of parallel FEM interface which includes the element data and the node array. The full procedures of solving a large scale structural problem are assumed to have pre-post processors, of which algorithm is not considered in this paper. The main advantage of implementing the parallel FEM interface is shown up in the case that we use a distributed memory system with a large number of processors to solve a very large scale problem. The memory efficiency and the performance effect are examined by analyzing some examples on the Pegasus cluster system.
A time-discontinuous Galerkin method based upon using a finite element formulation in time has evolved. This method, working from the differential equation viewpoint, is different from those which have been generally used. They admit discontinuities with respect to the time variable at each time step. In particular, the elements can be chosen arbitrarily at each time step with no connection with the elements corresponding to the previous step. Interpolation functions and weighting functions are taken to be discontinuous across inter-element boundaries. These methods lead to a unconditional stable higher-order accurate ordinary differential equation solver.

The supercavitating vehicle is an underwater vehicle that is surrounded almost completely by a supercavity to reduce hydrodynamic drag substantially. Since the cruise speed of the vehicle is much higher than that of conventional submarines, the drag force is huge and a buckling may occur. The buckling phenomenon is analyzed in this study through static and dynamic approaches. Critical buckling load and pressure as well as buckling mode shapes are calculated using static buckling analysis and a stability map is obtained from dynamic buckling analysis. When the finite element method (FEM) is used for the buckling analysis, the solver requires a linear static solver and an eigenvalue solver. In this study, these two solvers are integrated and a consolidated buckling analysis module is constructed. Furthermore, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is combined in the buckling analysis module to perform a design optimization computation of a simplified supercavitating vehicle. The simplified configuration includes cylindrical shell structure with three stiffeners. The target for the design optimization process is to minimize total weight while maintaining the given structure buckling-free.

This paper summarizes the components of an explicit aeroelastic solver developed especially for the simulation of dynamic fracture events occurring during the flight of solid propellant rockets. The numerical method combines an explicit Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) version of the Cohesive Volumetric Finite Element (CVFE) scheme, used to simulate the spontaneous motion of one or more cracks propagating dynamically through a domain with regressing boundaries, and an explicit unstructured finite volume Euler code to follow the flow field during the failure event. A key feature of the algorithm is the ability to adaptively repair and expand the fluid mesh to handle the large geometrical changes associated with grain deformation and crack motion.

The analysis of multi-flexible-body dynamics (MFBD) has been an important issue in the area of the computational dynamics. This technique has been developed and improved in RecurDyn solver. This paper reviews the formulation which is applied in the RecurDyn solver. Basically, in order to solve the multi-flexible-body dynamics problem, an incremental finite element formulation using a corotational procedure is used. In particular, in order to solve the rigid and flexible bodies together, a constraint equation between a rigid body and a flexible body is applied, in which a virtual body and a flexible body joint are introduced.

The theoretical background and a numerical solution procedure for a time domain hydroelastic code are presented in this paper. The code combines a VOF-based free surface flow solver with a flexible body motion solver where the body linear elastic deformation is described by a modal superposition of dry mode shapes expressed in a local floating frame of reference. These mode shapes can be obtained from any finite element code. The floating frame undergoes a pseudo rigid-body motion which allows for a large rigid body translation and rotation and fully preserves the coupling with the local structural deformation. The formulation relies on the ability of the flow solver to provide the total fluid action on the body including e.g. the viscous forces, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces, slamming forces and the fluid damping. A numerical simulation of a flexible barge is provided and compared to experiments to show that the VOF-based flow solver has this ability and the code has the potential to predict the global hydroelastic responses accurately.
