  • It is compared the structures of the S-block in the Ba-Co-Zn Y-type hexagonal ferrites (Ba2Co2-xZnxFe12O22, x=0~2) and the Co-Zn spinel ferrites (Co1-xZnxFe2O4, x=0~1) expressed by a hexagonal axis system (space group R3m). The structures have been refined with a Rietveld analysis of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern with high precision (Rwp<0.13, RI<0.03). The overal dimension of the S-block is slightly different from the 1/3 of a hexagonal spinel unit cell as follow: 1.6~2.0% longer c-axis, 1.3~1.6% shorter a-axis and about 1% smaller volume. Upto Zn:Co=1:1 in the Ba-Co-Zn Y-type hexagonal ferrites, the zinc substitute primarily the tetrahedral sites in the S-block. Beyond that the zinc seems to go into the T-block as well.

  • Magnetic properties of highly zinc-substituted manganese ferrites are discussed on the basis of cation distribution. High throughput neutron powder diffractometry indicates that the prepared samples possess a nearly normal spinel structure, where the substitution of nonmagnetic zinc ions mainly causes the dilution of magnetic ions in the A-sublattice and consequently affects bond-randomness in the B-sublattice. On the other hand, the estimated occupancy of manganese ions in the B site indicates that random anisotropy effects due to local Jahn-Teller distortions gradually weaken with the substitution. Bulk magnetometry indicates that the substitution smears the transition from a paramagnetic phase to a soft-magnetic phase. Furthermore, at lower temperatures, such a soft-magnetic phase is destabilized and a magnetic glassy state appears. These features of the magnetic properties of dilute spinel ferrites are discussed from the viewpoint of the above-mentioned various types of disorders.

  • Synthesis approaches usually affect the physical and chemical properties of ferrites. This helps ferrite materials to design them for desired applications. Some of these methods are mechanical milling, ultrasonic method, micro-emulsion, co-precipitation, thermal decomposition, hydrothermal, microwave-assisted, sol-gel, etc. These methods are extensively reviewed by taking example of ZnFe2O4. These methods also affect the microstructure and local structure of ferrite which ultimately affect the physical and chemical properties of ferrites. Various spectroscopic techniques such as Raman spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, Ultra Violet-Visible spectroscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy, extended x-ray absorption fine structure, and electron paramagnetic resonance are found helpful to reveal this information. Hence, the basic principle and the usefulness of these techniques to find out appropriate information in ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles is elaborated in this review.

  • The U-type ferrite is a kind of hexagonal ferrite, and it is known as a microwave absorber in the X-band. The magnetic and dielectric loss of the U-type ferrite change to the composition and coating layer, etc. In this study, the silicon oxide layer was coated on the substituted U-type ferrites to improve microwave absorption characteristics. The complex permittivity and complex permeability were measured using toroidal specimens that were press-molded and the measured frequency range was set from 2-18 GHz. The improvement of the microwave absorption rate was different according to the type of the substituted U-type ferrites. Only in the substituted U-type ferrites with nickel and zinc, an improvement in the microwave absorption rate due to enhancement of magnetic loss was confirmed. The highest microwave absorption was 99.9% at 9.6 GHz, which was S_Z0.5U.

  • We report on the synthesis of highly uniform, single phase zinc and cobalt thin films prepared by the Liquid Phase Deposition (LPD) method. X-Ray diffraction, TGA and EDX measurements support the assumption that the as deposited films are constituted by a mixture of crystallized FeOOH and amorphous M(OH)$_2$ (M=Co, Zn) which is converted upon heat treatment in air at 600?C into the corresponding zinc ferrites. The films with adjustable chemical compositions are identified with a crystal structure as spinel-type and present a spherical or rod-like microstructure, depending on the both the nature and concentration of the divalent transition metal ions. Zinc ferrite thin films present a superparamagnetic behavior above blocking temperatures which decrease with increasing the Zn content and are ferromagnetic at 5 K with coercivities ranging between 797.8 and 948.5 Oe, whereas the cobalt ferrite films are ferromagnetic at room temperature with magnetic characteristics strongly dependent on the chemical composition.

  • The current experiment has quantitatively investigated the effect of the content of CaO and SiO2 on the microstructure, density, electrical resistivity, power loss and initial permeability of manganese zinc ferrites. The density increased initially with CaO and SiO2 content and the further addition showed an adverse effect. The excess addition of CaO and SiO2 developed a discontinuous grain growth with numerous pores inside grains and lowered the electrical resistivity. The initial permeability decreased with increasing the content of SiO2. The samples with relatively low power loss showed that half of the total loss at 10$0^{\circ}C$, 100 kHz and 2000 Gauss was due to the eddy current loss.

  • The substituted lithium ferrites combine useful ferromagnetic properties with high Curie temperature ranging from 55$0^{\circ}C$ to 85$0^{\circ}C$, [1] high saturation magnetization, [2] and low microwave dielectric loss.[3] Saturation magnetization of (Z $n_{1-x}$ F $e_{x}$)A[L $i_{0.5x}$F $e_{ 2-0.5x}$]$_{B}$ $O_4$ increased with zinc concentration, followed by a decrease at x = 0.7.[4] This is attributed to a dilution of the A-site with zinc which initially causes an increase in saturation magnetization due to the dominance of the B-site. • Formation of stoichiometric lithium-, nickel-, and zinc- ferrites by calcining organo-metallic precursors a temperature below 40$0^{\circ}C$ is examined using DTA/TG, and XRD techniques. It attempts to simulate th immobilization of metal ions in industrial liquid influents (waste) through the synthesis of stoichiometric spinel ferrites (SSF). Two steps of the SSF formation during thermal treatments are noted. The transformation of magnetite to ${\gamma}$ - Fe$_2$O$_3$and subsequent first formation of SSF were observed at temperatures ranging from 200 to 45$0^{\circ}C$. Th formation of cation-containing ${\gamma}$-Fe$_2$O$_3$and subsequent second formation of the ferrite occurred at temperature ranges of < 45$0^{\circ}C$ and 500 to $650^{\circ}C$, depending on the heating rate used. Then the temperature range of 200t 45$0^{\circ}C$ is critical to the performance of the technique, because a calcination at the range would lead to a complete formation of SSF, avoiding the occurrences of ${\gamma}$-Fe$_2$O$_3$and ion-containing ${\gamma}$-Fe$_2$O$_3$. If not, so $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$would occur. And annealing at temperature above $650^{\circ}C$ must be employed by which solid-state reactio of $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$with metal ions (possibly metal oxides) to form SSF can be conducted.
