  • This paper presents a comparative study of P and PI controllers for a current source inverter (CSI) fed induction motor drive system. A dq model has been used which incorporates the induction motor and the inverter power supply with current feedback. The model is used first to generate the steady state curves to determine the operating point through computer simulations using the software package MATLAB. Then a transient analysis has been carried out for different values of the speed and current controller parameters. The controller value is adjusted by the Ziegler-Nichols method. It has been observed that the transient time to reach the steady state value is larger with the PI controller than with the P controller.

  • Recently, for the speed control of a diesel engine, some methods using the modern control theory such as LQ control technique, or $\textit{H}_{\infty}$control theory etc., have been reported. However, most of speed controlers of a diesel engine ever developed are still using the PID control algorithm. And, as another approach to the speed control of a diesel engine, the authors proposed already a new method to adjust the parameters of the PID controller by a model matching method. In the previous paper, the authors confirmed that the proposed new method is superior to Ziegler & Nichols's method through the analysis of results of the digital simulations under the assumption that the parameters of a diesel engine are known exactly. But, actually, it is very difficult to find out the value of parameters of a diesel engine accurately. And the parameters of a diesel engine are changigng according to the operating condition of a diesel engine. So, in this paper, a method to estimate the parameters of the PID controller for the speed control of a diesel engine by means of the model matching method are proposed. Also, the digital simulations are carried out in cases either with or without measurement noise. And this paper confirms that the proposed method here is superior to Ziegler & Nichols's method through the analysis of the characteristics of indicial responses.

  • This paper presents modern optimization methods for determining the optimal parameters of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller for coupled tank systems. The main objective is to obtain a fast and stable control system for coupled tank systems by tuning of the PID controller using the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm. The result is compared in terms of system transient characteristics in time domain. The obtained results using the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm are also compared to conventional PID tuning method like the Ziegler-Nichols tuning method, the Cohen-Coon method and IMC (Internal Model Control). The simulation results have been simulated by MATLAB and show that tuning the PID controller using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm provides a fast and stable control system with low overshoot, fast rise time and settling time.

  • We propose a new method to deal with the optimized auto-tuning for the PID controller which is used to the process-control in various fields. First of all, in this method, 1st order delay system with dead time which is modelled from the unit step response of the system is Pade-approximated, then initial values are determined by the Ziegler-Nichols method and deciding binary strings of parents generation using by the fitness values of genetic algorithms, we perform selection, crossover and mutation to generate the descendant generation. The advantage of this method is better than the Ziegler-Nickels method in characteristic of output, and has extent of applying without limit of K, L, T parameters.

  • As the drilling depth increases, the cutting torque increases and fluctuates, which can lead to the machine tool vibration, severe tool wear, and catastrophic tool breakage. Hence, cutting torque control is very important to improve productivity in drilling. In this paper, a PID controller was designed to control the drilling torque. The plant including the feed drive system, cutting process and spindle drive system was modeled for controller design. The Ziegler-Nichols method was used to determine the controller gain and control action times and the root locus plot was used to tune the controller gain for a certain cutting condition. Also, suggested was a simple method to obtain the tuned controller gain for an arbitrary cutting condition not using the Ziegler-Nichols method and the root locus plot. The performance of the designed controller and the effect of controller gain tuning were verified from experiments.

  • Parameter tuning methods by Ziegler-Nickels for control systems are generally classified into Z-N(1) and Z-N(2). The purpose of this paper is to describe what relations exist between methods of Z-N(1) and Z-N(2), or how Z-N(1) method can be originated from Z-N(2) method by analyzing one loop control system of P or PI controller and time delay process. The formulas of Z-N(1) consist of process parameters, L(time delay), $K_m$(gain) and $T_m$(time constant), but Z-N(2) method is based only on the ultimate gain $K_u$ and the ultimate period $T_u$ acquired normally by practical trial without any parameters of Z-N(1). In this paper, for the first step to seek mutual relations, the simple formulas of Z-N(2) are transformed into the formulas composed of the same parameters as Z-N(1) which is derived from the analysis of frequency characteristics. Then, the approximation of the actual ultimate frequency is proposed as important premise in the translation between Z-N(1) and (2). Such equalization and approximation brings a simple approximated formula which can explain how Z-N(1) is originated from the Z-N(2) in the form of formula. And a model system is adopted to compare the approximated formula to Z-N(1) and Z-N(2) methods, the results of which show the effectiveness of the proposals.

  • Wind energy is becoming one of the most preferable alternatives to conventional sources of electric power that rely on fossil fuels. For stable electric power generation, constant rotating speed control of a wind turbine is performed through pitch control and stall control of the turbine blades. Recently, variable pitch control has been implemented in modern wind turbines to harvest more energy at variable wind speeds that are even lower than the rated one. Although wind turbine pitch controllers are currently optimized using a step response via the Ziegler-Nichols auto-tuning process, this approach does not satisfy the requirements of variable pitch control. In this study, the variable pitch controller was optimized by a genetic algorithm using a neural network model that was constructed by the Latin Hypercube sampling method to improve the Ziegler-Nichols auto-tuning process. The optimized solution shows that the root mean square error, rise time, and settle time are respectively improved by more than 7.64%, 15.8%, and 15.3% compared with the corresponding initial solutions obtained by the Ziegler-Nichols auto-tuning process.

  • The aim of this paper is to design a speed controller of a DC motor by selection of a PID parameters using genetic algorithm. The model of a DC motor is considered as a typical non-oscillatory, second-order system, And this paper compares three kinds of tuning methods of parameter for PID controller. One is the controller design by the genetic algorithm. second is the controller design by the model matching method third is the controller design by Ziegler and Nichols method. It was found that the proposed PID parameters adjustment by the genetic algorithm is better than the Ziegler & Nickels' method. And also found that the results of the method by the genetic algorithm is nearly same as the model matching method which is analytical method. The proposed method could be applied to the higher order system which is not easy to use the model matching method.

  • An iterative tuning technique is derived for PID controllers which are widely used in industries. The tuning algorithm is based upon a fuzzy indirect reasoning method and an iterative technique. The PID gains for the first tuning action are determined by a method which is modified from the Ziegler-Nichols step response method. The first PID gains are determined to obtain a control performance so close to a design performance that the following tuning process can be made effectively. The design paramaters are given as time-domain variables which human is familiar with. The results of simulation studies show that the proposed tuning method can produce an effective tuning for arbitrary design performances.

  • A new controller tuning method for solving problems that cannot be applicable to the processes with large time delay by Yuwana-Seborg method is presented. The new method is based on a single experimental test, a step change in the controller set point. Simulation results show that the new method can be not only well applicable to systems including large delay processes but also is superior to Ziegler-Nichols method or Cohen-Coon method in many respects despite unanticipated load disturbances that may occur during the experimental test.
