  • Zeolite is an ideal host material for encapsulating nano-size metal catalyst species because of its defined microporous structure, prominent adsorption/condensation properties, high surface area, chemical/thermal stability, and transparency to light. In this study, $TiO_2$ photocatalyst was incorporated in highly hydrophobic Y zeolite and its photocatalytic activity was examined in the photocatalytic oxidation of olefins under UV-light irradiation using molecular oxygen as an oxygen source. $TiO_2$ nanoparticles incorporated in hydrophobic Y zeolite exhibited a markedly enhanced photocatalytic activity compared with bare $TiO_2$ owing to its excellent affinity toward organic moieties, which facilitates the mass transfer of organic substrates and allows them to efficiently access to the neighboring active $TiO_2$ surface.

  • Laboratory column experiments for simultaneous removal of Cd and Cr(VI) are conducted using newly developed material, referred to as Fe-loaded zeolite, which has both reduction ability of iron and ion exchange ability of zeolite. Breakthrough curves were obtained from each column experiment, and described with advection-dispersion equation. Apparent parameters including $K_{app}\;and\;D_{app}$ were newly introduced for effectively describing the Cr(VI) breakthrough curve. $K_{app}$ decreased with increasing initial contaminant concentration and with decreasing flow rates. Whereas, $D_{app}$ were not significantly affected by initial contaminant concentration or flow rate.

  • For the proposal of Microcystis aeruginosa control technique by coagulants, removal effects of coagulants were carried out using isolated strain and collected water bloom of M. aeruginosa on Downstream of the Nakdong River. Both of purified and field-collected M. aeruginosa were entirely sedimented by the addition of the coagulant ceramic-zeolite type Co 100 (1.5 mg/$\ell$) within 24 hr, but Yellow loess (10 mg/$\ell$) was less effective for the removal of M. aeruginosa within 24hr. Thus it was concluded that Ceramic-Zeolite type Co 100 was the most effective coagulant.

  • Chloride induced reinforcement corrosion is widely accepted to be the most frequent mechanism causing premature degradation of reinforced concrete structures. The electrochemical impedance of reinforcing steel in diatomite- and zeolite-containing concrete exposed to sodium chloride was assessed. Chemical, physical and mineralogical properties of three concrete samples (20% diatomite, 20% zeolite, and a reference containing neither) were correlated with corrosion investigations. The steel-reinforced samples were exposed to 3.5% NaCl solution for 500 days, and measured every 15 days via EIS method. Results indicated that porosity and capillary spaces increase the diffusion rate of water and electrolytes throughout the concrete, making it more susceptible to cracking. Reinforcement in the reference concrete was the most corroded compare to the zeolite and the diatomite samples.

  • The adsorption performance of cupper and zinc ions($Cu^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$) in aqueous solution was investigated by an adsorption process on reagent grade Na-A zeolite(Z-WK) and Na-A zeolite (Z-C1) prepared from coal fly ash. Z-C1 was synthesized by a fusion method with coal fly ash from a thermal power plant. Batch adsorption experiment with Z-C1 was employed to study the kinetics and equilibrium parameters such as initial metal ions concentration and adsorption time of the solution on the adsorption process. Adsorption rate of metal ions occurred rapidly and adsorption equilibrium reached at less than 120 minutes. The kinetics data of $Cu^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ ions were well fitted by a pseudo-second-order kinetics model more than a pseudo-first-order kinetics model. The equilibrium data were well fitted by a Langmuir model and this result showed $Cu^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ adsorption on Z-C1 would be occupied by a monolayer adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity($q_{max}$) by the Langmuir model was determined as $Cu^{2+}$ 99.8 mg/g and $Zn^{2+}$ 108.3 mg/g, respectively. It appeared that the synthetic zeolite, Z-C1, has potential application as absorbents in metal ion recovery and mining wastewater.

  • Well-shaped NaA zeolite cubic crystals of a large size of $5-7{\mu}m$ were synthesized by a hydrothermal method in a mother solution having a $3.55Na_2O:Al_2O_3:1.6SiO_2:593\~2000H_2O$ composition. Thermal treatment of NaA zeolite crystals resulted in the formation of a crystalline phase of $NaAlSiO_4-Camegeite$ between 800 and $900^{\circ}C$. Even at $1000^{\circ}C,\;NaAlSiO_4$ phase was found as a major product. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and DTA/TGA and BET analyses were used to characterize the initial materials and the obtained products after various heat treatments.

  • The effect of application of gypsum (G), popped rice hulls (PRH), and zeolite (Z) in exchangeable cations concentrations of reclaimed tideland soil in Kyehwado was investigated for 3 years from 2004 to 2006 in a pot experiment with bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon). Treatments with three soil conditioner and with three applications were established with three replications; G1 (1,550 kg $10a^{-1}$), G2 (3,100), and G3 (6,200) for gypsum, H1 (1,000), H2 (2,000), and H3 (3,000) for PRH, and HZ1 (200), HZ2 (400), and HZ3 (800) for co-application of zeolite with PRH at the 1,500 kg $10a^{-1}$. At 60, 90, 120 days after treatment (DAT), exchangeable cations ($K^+$, $Na^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, and $Ca^{2+}$) were analyzed Gypsum application significantly decreased $k^+$, $Na^+$, $Mg^{2+}$ in the soil probably due to exchange and subsequent leaching of these cations by $Ca^{2+}$ from the gypsum applied. Overall, $K^+$ concentration was gradually decreased by continuous application of soil conditioners and was in the order of 2004>2005>2006 regardless of the kinds and application rate of soil conditioners. Comparing $K^+$ concentrations among the soil conditioners in the same year, its concentration was in the order of gypsum$Na^+$ concentration; i.e. $Na^+$ concentration was in the order of gypsum$\ll$PRH$Mg^{2+}$ also showed a similar pattern to $Na^+$. Gypsum application significantly increased $Ca^{2+}$ concentration and in the gypsum treated soil $Ca^{2+}$ concentration increased with years.

  • This study was carried out the fundamental experiment to investigate the pervaporation process through NaA zeolite membrane for recycling the wasted isopropyl alcohol(IPA) in semiconductor cleaning processes. The NaA zeolite membrane used showed the excellent separation performance for full range of feed concentration and at high temperature operation. At 80 in operation temperature and 90 wt% IPA in feed concentration the separation performance was obtained about $1,500 g/m^2/hr$ in the permeation flux and more than 1,000 in the separation factor. In continuous operation of dehydration of IPA the average permeation flux was obtained about $1,000 g/m^2/hr$ at 80 and 90 wt% IPA feed concentration.

  • To evaluate the influence of 3A zeolite on the flame retardant properties of poplar plywood. Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and 3A zeolite were used as flame retardants to prepare plywood samples. The combustion properties, such as heat release rate (HRR), total heat release (THR), mean CO and $CO_2$ yield, smoke production rate (SPR), and total smoke production (TSP), were characterized by a cone calorimeter. A synergistic effect was observed between 3A zeolite and APP on reducing the HRR and mean CO yield. The probable flame retardation mechanism was proposed.

  • In the present study, pure RHO zeolite was hydrothermally synthesized by using 18-crown-6 ether as a structure directing agent(SDA), and the small gases adsorption was investigated. Synthesized RHO zeolite was a cube shape particle of which average edge length was around $1.2{\mu}m$ and composed of primary crystallites having a diameter of around 100 to 200 nm. RHO zeolite structure was stable under 3h calcination at $600^{\circ}C$. Water adsorption data announced that RHO zeolite has a specific surface area of 483.32 m2/g and its micropore diameter was about 4 A. Gas adsorption was studied in the pressure range of 50 to 500 kPa for $CO_2$, $N_2$, $O_2$ and $H_2$. It was evident that RHO zeolite showed a strong $CO_2$ adsorption behavior. Especially, RHO zeolite showed a transient $CO_2$ adsorption behavior. The 3h $CO_2$ up-take at 50 kPa and 500 kPa was 1.283 and 3.357 mmol/g, respectively. The $CO_2/H_2$ selectivity was around 16 at 500 kPa. Compared with gas adsorption data for some representative microporous adsorbents, it was certain that RHO zeolite is a beneficial adsorbent for $CO_2/H_2$ separation.
